You do not need to join a guild to get guild marks. That's the point I'm trying to make. You can also purchase things with your guild mark w/o requiring membership. Unless SE changed this recently in a patch this was how it was going back to beta.

For DoW/M/L yeah, but you do for DoH and the 20+ quests are for joining the guild & advancing their stories, which I think is pretty bitching. Though I swear marks are so rare from craft leves and they're never listed as a reward. Instead, once you join a guild they should let you trade items for marks the way we did in FFXI when you had a guild contract.

At the very least it would help spur demand for some items.

        Re: Crafting Guilds

Ok. I understand it now. I've read through all the debates you guys are having and I undertand what to do now. I'm R19 WVR and I'm currently logged off outside the WVR guild in Ul'Dah trying to craft my way to 20 so I can take this quest to start earning Marks. Hopefully tomorrow will be the day I start to earn. I'm anxiously awaiting the books so that I can start crafting more efficiently and produce things that are actually worth selling.

The most frustrating part of the entire process is weeding through all the crap I don't need that I get from drops. Most of the stuff I get is worthless and won't sell to PCs no matter how long it's on my retainer. Certain items like Marmot Pelts sell for a decent chunk to an NPC an are worth holding onto. I jsut have to be creful what I sell and what I keep while maintaining space in my/my retainer's inventory. A lot of the higher level recipes call for stuff that can only be made by other crafts.

As a result of this, I'm holding onto all of my shards/crystals as well as any loot that I get that I looks like it would go towards a craft I need to level later... ie: Leather/hides Wood/logs/branches and Ore/metal.

I know that leather is needed for some WVR items because it's integrated in the recipes. I know I need Blacksmith because the needles I use are made of metal (mostly) as well as some buckles for clothes... and I know I need Woodworking because my staves/wands are obviously made of wood.

I've also had to take up Botonist to go chop down trees for the wood I need and Mining to get the ore I don't get from drops.

When they said that crafting would be an integral part of this game, didn't fathom it would be taken this far. It's frustrating... but it offers depth of crafting that I always felt was lacking in FFXI.

          Mhmm, inventory is a total nightmare for people like me who want to try their hand at everything. I'm sure SE will put some kind of skill cap in place eventually but even then I've enjoyed leveling so many crafts, minus the inventory headache ><;

Don't hang on to anything you plan to use for crafting though unless you're either reasonably close to using it, or it's extremely rare/expensive (actually, if it's incredibly expensive that's even more incentive to sell it as more people leveling up will drop rates)

My friend had a piece of advice that was worth mentioning here. If you're not going to use it today, sell them all. You can buy them back at any time and over a long period of time, the intrinsic values of those items tend to change, but the value of the in-game currency does not.

I have a very difficult time following his advice. I'm a packrat by nature and absolutely will just freeze up when inventory space is gone and I have to decide what to get rid of. Those are the times that tend to be long and agonizing for me.

Oh yeah, I'm the same way. I filled my retainer is CRAP... as well as their bazaar and my inventory and bazaar. I went through all of it today... it took me an hour.

One question I did have that I can answer myself when I get home from work is... how many retainers can you employ on one character? So far I just have the one... but it seems I'm allowed to have more. How many is the max?

Just an FYI, buckles come from Armorer, not Blacksmith.

It would be better to just buy your needles and weapons and just focus your crafting on things to boost Weaving specifically and just rely on other crafters to make your other weapons and tools.

Oh, hey thanks. I might focus... i might just be broad... i'm not sure. I really like the idea of trying a little of everything until rank 20 and then focusing. That way I can have a good base for later... you know.... what I DIDNT have with FFXI, lol.

1 per character that you've made, but remember that you're not able to directly transfer item between multiple characters. There's ways of doing it, but it's not very convenient and becomes quite costly over time.

The only problem with this is that quite a few recipes require skills from other crafts to support what you're making. Sure, you can "powerlevel" your craft and pick only the recipes which are independent of other crafts, but this tends to be the most costly and at times do not overlap nicely enough to allow for a smooth leveling experience.

I tend to agree. The only thing I have against powerleveling one craft instead of more than 1 is the fatigue system. I craft like a fiend and over time, my results (exp wise) are less and less. I need to branch off if only to utilize the effectiveness of the fatigue system and still feel like I'm getting somewhere.

                        Re: Crafting Guilds

I've been going 1 rank a day on armorer from 21-now 27 and I didn't hit fatigue at all, still gaining 230+ a synth while grinding.

This week's plan is to hit leather 20 and then take armorer to 30-33.
My weaver is stuck at 16 since lightening crystals are hard as heck to get, though I'm only leveling it to repair my crafting gear as I go up.

(Still using cotton set since nobody has the canvas doublet recipe...)

Though I'm strugling with ARM guild marks, I've only managed to get 1k over the last 2 weeks. and I do ARM leves w/e they reset...

At this rate I'll never get any books lol.

Me too X.x I'm like that in every single freaking RPG I play. I've gotten better, but I still have a tendency to finish FF games with a stockpile of Elixirs and other emergency, game-breaking items to the extent that I'll never use them all.
