I wouldn't call 150,000 pre orders a good sell. FFX preorders for Japan and the US was 1.4 million. Yes, this is an online game and garners a more conservative audience but I still wouldn't think its good. If they had been doing some advertising in the US, they could conceivably double those numbers. Or maybe they aren't advertising now because they realize what the release is going to be like so they'll wait till things are more on an even keel, like when the PS3 version is released.

I believe Aeni's point is that 150k is good "considering the circumstances". This is essentially a PC game right now; a high-end MMO at that.

The only people who'd be interested are enthusiasts or people who REALLY want the game. You simply can't advertise a high-end game in Japan where people generally play on consoles.

Then again, there haven't been any gameplay videos to attract people, which kind of blows. This is a gorgeous game, and if they can drag in some people with high-end rigs to the scene, I think it'll generate a fair amount of buzz just for the technical aspects required (IE, Crysis and such).

Are you telling me you're hot for him? I won't question your tastes, but they're the same thing. You can't compare because the value of an idol is localized and indicative of the populace. Saying Bieber is a retarded kid is also saying that the tastes of many Americans are also retarded. Well, to be fair, there hasn't actually been any real gameplay to attract the average game player. As an MMO this game is great, but that's something only MMO players will realize. As a game in general, this game looks slow and dull and overcomplicated with no scary monsters or flashy super abilities. SE should've at least had a few super mobs in the Beta or in at least one of the game con demos to show off the higher levels of the game.

At least I know who Bieber is and have seen enough of his "work" to have reached the conclusion that he is (in my opinion) a retarded kid.

I dunno, I gotta give him his props as he really knows how to work the biz and roll with the punches. He might be one of the few kid-stars who can come out of it all in one piece, and I can't help but give the ones who can do that at least a little respect.

150,000 subscribers in the U.S. alone and as Malacite pointed out, FFXI is currently only at 500,000*** worldwide. If you total up world figures, then it's still respectable. Also, console figures are very, very skewed. You have to remember, the figures total in for purchases made by rental companies. These include usually standbys Blockbuster and Gamefly and as well as local rentals. You can do this with console games, but you cannot do this with PC games. I would wager that the FFX presale figures at least 1/2 went to mom and pop and chain rentals in Japan and all over the world.

And as WM pointed out, PCs are not cheap in Japan and most people in Japan think their mobile devices are good enough for 90% of their daily activities and would just drop by a LAN Center if they need to use a PC for something.


*** 500,000 was actually the figure given 3 years ago ... I doubt it's even half that right now with server condensing and the fact that I hardly see anyone on the server I'm at during "peak JP hours".
