Re: Final Fantasy XIV Pre-Launch Event Coverage

Actually, just by upgrading my crappy beginner lancer equipment to something for level 23?~ with 80 defense and a ton of evasion, I went from being nearly dead after killing 1-2 dodo's, to being able to clear an entire field of them with relative ease. Gear does make a lot of difference, just really not for damage. xD

IIRC, you can't undertake leves for specific classes until you are rank 30 or higher in that class.

Yeah it's pretty stupid IMO, like Rank 10 wouldn't be high enough? Especially given the cost of some of them (5000 marks? I don't even know how many you get per leve but I'd wager it's a couple hundred) and a lot of the stuff you can buy is basic crap, like learning how to properly process ingots.

I mean, why am I learning basic techniques when I'm already at the intermediate or even advanced level? GJ SE.

you dont have to have the book in order to do those things, it boosts your effectiveness making them , I think

              ....gender?

I said that you should think about what you're rolling. You said that people shouldn't care. I disagree.

              1. You may not be able to change your appearance of your character. Aside from the mention of a beauty salon/barber, ripped off from WoW apparently, there doesn't seem likely to be any service, premium or otherwise, so this alone should make you think.

              2. Naming your character also has the same caveat.
None of this stuff matters because I was specifically talking about your initial Class.

              3. Hand/Land or War/Magic and then even within those ... look, to be fairly honest, if you're going to change a class immediately after receiving your first 1,000 gil reward and it's because you changed your mind, then you should just delete your character and start over. At the cost of 20 min this is a simple task and you should've saved your model so you can load it up quickly and easily enough. Guild Marks are a priority and also saving some gil early on is the best way to weather the storm of a non-AH market in which (as I already experienced in beta) there's a lot of price gouging going around and even player collusion in market controls.
....ooooorr you keep your character and just spend a small initial investment into one of the many NPCs who sell other classes starting weapons and gear to skill up other classes to build your character all around. You're supposed to be changing classes repeatedly. The very leveling system they added into this game encourages multiple class usage. Why would you have to completely remake your character because you want to try out one of the other classes...which take all of 600-900 gil at *most* to gain access to?

              4. Starting gear won't be replaced (I promise you) so easily if you're spending most of your earnings to a craft. This means that making sure your stats on gear is optimized even for just a few points (but most importantly, defense points, evasion, etc) makes all the difference in the world. A lot of leves will spawn several enemies at once (when one of them decides to run away and health pool still too high to take down with one casual toss of a javelin) and you'll need to be in top shape if you're soloing.
Except 1) Many leves give you armor upon success 2) the starting gear is pretty dirt cheap via NPCs 3) it really don't make that much of a difference...which you yourself state...in this very same post (seriously, wtf?) I mean seriously, this:

This means that making sure your stats on gear is optimized even for just a few points (but most importantly, defense points, evasion, etc) makes all the difference in the world.
              completely contradicts this:

Gear doesn't give much stat bonus as you're giving it credit for.
If you apply to any end game LS, you will not need to be worried about certain things, like having a tank or healer at the ready. What will happen if you go up against a very organized LS that consists of dedicated healers, tanks and DPS? No hybrids, just purely devoted to one and one role only.

Then that one LS will be very successful at going through end game content than another LS which consists of a rag-tag team cobbled together of a lot of hybrids (i.e., Marauder/Healer)
Seeing as all the in-game events seem to be instanced, there is no direct competition between the two. What does it matter if one Company (Linkshells are for social chat, Companies are for Endgame events) can beat a Guildleve in 20 minutes while another can beat it in 10? They both beat it, who cares how much more efficient one is over the other?

Also, with everything being Instanced, events will be aimed at smaller groups, smaller groups favor those with more flexibility in specific situations. Flexibility comes from "hybridization", players who can adjust to fit different roles on the fly. Combined with Crafting and Gathering jobs also making full use of stat modifications, there's plenty of reason for people to have very varied and often balanced stat set-ups.

It makes a big difference though, and like I said it's for basic stuff mostly...

The advanced techniques yeah sure, but why should I have to be say a level 30 Weaver before learning how to properly spin thread? >_>

You already know how to properly spin thread. It's a boost in your ability to do so.

The item in question specifically says training though. Typically, one trains in how do something (i.e. RTFM) before actually going ahead and trying to make things, not the other way around! Even when you go to do basic recipes for guild leves, these manuals are usually provided along with the materials by the NPcs, which makes it even more silly. If this is stuff we ought to have for early level crafting, why do we have to be so advanced to get it?

The game also says "well come" instead of "welcome," amongst many others.

In addition to Malacite's observation that needing to be 30 for something simple seems dumb, I am posting his signature here for the perusal of future generations.

Idk if it's just cause I'm a noob, but I get insane failures when I don't have the "training" required for a craft. Maybe it's just cause I'm a noob.

Are you using the right techniques? Also, make sure to get image support and if you're still failing a lot, chances are the item is just too high a skill level for you. Thankfully, the game actually does notify you when you attempt a synth (though it'd be nice if it did so beforehand) if your skill/subskill isn't high enough.

I think it was when I was making table salt in alchemy, it said my cooking skill wasn't high enough. Kind of ironic when I was making the salt for use in cooking in the first place but meh. And I wuvs my Strike Witches sig. I had another Haruhi one, but it was kinda huge and well, even more suggestive >_> (yet less revealing which is funny)

I think the crafting system is very much like in FFXI except it's a bit more ... interactive? Whereas in FFXI it appears that you have no control over the results, in FFXIV it seems you have some leeway in affecting the results (i.e., the different synthesis and even options like "touch up" where you can try for an HQ)

There are some things I'm still not certain about, like crystals being turned into shards for use and I've seen the book that they sell allowing you to do that (but it's one book per element, which means you need lots of those books) And on Lindblum, I've seen level 35+ JP players, so I'm pretty sure they have guild marks or at least experienced how the system works. Unlike "adventuring", apparently crafting doesn't have an exp restriction and these guys can just level to however high they want circumventing the system.
