Yes, me and about every other fucking person who knows what they're talking about. What an MMO is in practical terms has never been a subject of debate.

What you're doing is akin to someone talking about cola, and you going "hey, look at this coffee! It's brown and bubbly! It's cola, guys!".

RPG sure. But that doesn't make it persistent. The MMO genre, like all genres, is defined by what has come previously. And not everything fits into any genre. There's nothing wrong with that, and there's a lot of value to being new-- but you can't just shoehorn things into the closest relative all the time.

    No. Learn to fucking read.

MMO refers to games which have persistent online worlds. It's not a measure of size, playerbase, or anything except the formation of a world which exists regardless of what the players do.

When you start a game in MAG, from everything I understand, you start afresh. You do not maintain games for all time. I would presume it uses the traditional lobby/host/join system that most FPS games use.

MMO is shortened from MMORPG -- Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game. This is because MMOs were all originally RPGs, and most still are (there are a couple of MMOFPS and MMORTS out there I think). It was about RPGs which were online, and had massive amounts of players.

This is to distinguish between RPGs which are simply multiplayer (See FFCC), or RPGs which have online play (Neverwinter Nights 2) from RPGs which take place in worlds which are shared by players who may not be directly working with/against each other, such as EQ, UO, FFXI, WoW, etc.

"Massive" referring to the size of the battles. Last I checked, MAG doesn't have a persistent world, but simply 255 player online.
Regardless of what you do in the game, it's still a game that is massive. Just like an MMO is a game and is massive. So is MAG an MMO? It's a Massive game, Multiplayer, and it's Online..

Maybe they'll have some costumes like they do in Aion. Like some FF8 SeeD uniforms, or a Yuna Summoner outfit. Stuff that maybe costs a lot to make or takes a fairly difficult quest to obtain, but that you could just wear around town to look pretty.

waaa, my ff8 disks don't read anymore. maybe its the ps1. but , I think FFXIV might have a Garden guild with kewl navy blue uniforms!

I would like the see them add better incentives for being a part of a certain nation. Not just some doofus rings and conquest rewards, but actually have that nation's quests provide some incentives to remain patriotic. That said, I never have left Windurst. That's because its where all the smart people live.

So far the crafts of FFXIV seem to have a bit mode personality to them than just straight-up synthesis. A Roegadyn blacksmith or a Lalafell harvester are much more striking imagery, especially now that there will be actual meaning to crafts with item permanence out the window.

FFXI's RNG and BST had a little more immersion to the job in that they had abilities like Widescan or Scavenge. which made them feel like hunters and gatherers. These are things that actually lended character to a potential craft. Fishing did as well, because it was the only craft without synthesis to drive it. but it was essential to cooking and alchemy.

    Re: FFXIV interview.

I appreciated the faction aspect in WoW but I hated that we couldn't communicate at all. I'm sure Blizzard did that so we wouldn't gank and talk shit all night and day, but really, if you think limiting communication is going to stop people talking shit ... well, it isn't. There was plenty of shit-talking between Horde characters regardless.

I like that there might be some strain here, but there's also no PvP. I understand that they don't want people getting ganked left and right, and that's fine, but if you're going to have factions which may be fighting with each other (or maybe just aren't exactly friends), I don't see why we can't fight each other just a little. It would do a lot to immerse people into the whole PvP aspect. You could still group with them to accomplish things, but perhaps that could even affect your level of fame/reputation ... aiding the enemy or something. Would be interesting, and it would inject an amount of RP into servers without actually turning them into RP severs. I mean in XI there was always this "Ewwwwww you're from Basstock ... ewwwwww" thing, but never anything serious. Would be kind of awesome to see them expand on that somewhat. I'm not terribly interested in completely limiting who I can group with because of faction alliances to the extent that WoW did, but there might be something in place where "opposing" factions might not want to always do things together, or maybe certain missions can't include members of the "opposition."

It would definitely inject a bit of RP there. I also kind of hope they don't allow us to change nations or anything, it seems to give people a bit more of an allegiance that really isn't quite existent in FFXI. I had someone switch nations just to be closer to his guild, not out of any sense of "This is the best nation and I like it the best and I'm loyal to it."

Would be interesting to see. But I'm fairly doubtful.

    Re: FFXIV interview.

"bad" questions always happen in interviews.
    Well then, let me rephrase:

There are no stupid questions, only stupid people.

To back Armando, along with what others have been saying about FFXIV all along - FFXIV will not be FFX1 Version 2.

There are different design choices - inspired by western MMOs- already set up in FFXIV.

    - Destructable weapons
    - Factions within races
    - Barter and trade
    - Quests for EXP from the outset

The factioning alone says a bit about the difference. If Duskwight Elezen and Elezen don't get along, you might have to some questing as a Duskwight to gain more favor in the eyes of the normal Elezen. I'm not expecting them to want to kill each other in sight in EQ, but I don't think that choice was made without a big reason behind it. Otherwise we'd just have the five races in a story-themed uneasy alliance like FFXI. But we have five races with two factions each it seems. A few confirmed to be choices.

Are you going to be a Duskwight Elezen when you play or just Ziero all over again? Sorry, it doesn't seem like you'd be interesting.

I mean, let's give SE a little more credit here - they can build a more complex system and they probably are. I'm not assuming a faction system like EQ will be in place, but I'm not expecting everyone to be goody-goodies this time.

SE has been opening up to the idea of letting us play not-so-wholesome characters these days. Valkyrie Profile on DS, Dissidia on PSP, the mafioso theme of Final Fantasy Versus XIII are a few examples. You can't tell me these are normal moves for SE, they're a pretty new thing for them. Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days, again, we're being the bad guys.

So the faction thing is just another part of this new trend for them. Faction is more of a roleplay thing. I wasn't exactly thrilled when i heard EQII was going to only have a Freeport and Qeynos as starting points and they were going to be default good and evil cities. I mean, Barbarians come from Halas, man, no self-respecting Barbarian would live in either city.

If anybody can venture as guess as to why a game might have game stuff in it, please do.

I wouldn't call the towns in Guild Wars a glorified chat room so much as I would a glorified interface. They've taken what they could easily access through simple menus, and they've turned it into a game space. Persistent? Possibly. World? No. It's part of the immersion, but it in no way constitutes a massively multiplayer online game.

I know that WoW isn't all instanced. I was just using it as an example since she said the "world" needs to be persistant.

Think of the town being WoW's worls, just with out monsters. Then, think of the instances in WoW the maps with the mosnters.

I'm pretty sure that GW is a persistant world, except its just the towns, and not the battla areas.

So... In order for a game to be an MMO, it has to be a FULL persistant world? Then I guess WoW isnt a MMO then either.
