RNG cannot replace a mage - even though they may stand far from the monster they are functionally a damage melee. You later reveal that the BLM was subbed SMN, compounding the calamity. (But a RNG can't really replace a BLM/SMN either - they can't magic burst, Escape, Stun or enfeeble. Furthermore their WS miss pretty often making them unreliable sources of damage. Not to say RNG are useless - they are good pullers if skilled and don't need resting or Refresh to keep up their damage - but as far as party setup is concerned they have a lot more in common with MNK or DRG than with any mage.)
Mostly correct. If you are fighting mobs that aren't overly difficult, Rng can fill in for a blackmage damage slot... if damage is -all- you need. When the fight is over, I normally tally similar damage numbers to the blms... even though it is not nearly as much of a "damage on command" sort. The lack of bursting ability hurts though. The issue at this point is not so much that the WS miss, it's that the WS aren't really powerful damagewise (until 55).

I do agree probably needed to swap a ranger with a some other sort of caster (or better yet, bard) and have the blm use a real subjob in that particular setup.

The party setup was Pld, Drg, Rng, Rng, Blm, and Me, the whm.
I can't believe I missed this the first time around. Right off the bat I can tell you that this is a slow party due to no MP regen and no support healer (PLD doesn't count). If the BLM had subbed WHM then maybe things would've been nicer but ultimately you want to replace one of those RNG with an RDM or BRD.

Yes, I realize the party setup sucked. lol But I wasn't in charge, and I'm too nice to have left them. :/ They seemed to be in a rush, so they grabbed people in about 5 minutes. Later that night I got a very nice party in CN and did much better. ^^ Thanks for your advice, I will try the sit down/stand up thing Feenicks mentioned. I hadn't known about that. :X

i dont know about you, but on NA client, it takes me about 3 seconds after i issue command to rest to actually rest, and 3 more to stand back up. one of my pet peeves about this game, heh. i usually issue "Sit" in the middle of a spell, actually, so that right when its done i sit down.. sometimes i do it to early and fuck up the casting though

It's not just you...I've done this before, but I've cut that practice out...

Through my experiences in Boyadha never once has the pt wanted to try spiders. Crabs are easy as hell and no wicked AOE attacks or sickle slash. But anyways like others have said it was not your fault.

i wouldnt worry too much about deaths.. i mean they happen.. especially with that sickle slash.. u could be casting regen 2, and it slashes for over 700.. sometimes that happens, u just raise and move on.. most times, the dead people will understand what happened, and move on.. sometimes they will be upset, but nothing u can do about that

I've had a paladin die from a 623 damage Sickle Scythe while the whm was casting regen II and a ninja get 1-shot (kinda) from sickle scythe + double attk crit immediately back to back.
I had a similar experience to Locke's in Garlaige Citadel. We were fighting funnel bats and our RNG had the bright idea to use Barrage + Piercing Arrow whenever TP was at 100%, instead of waiting until right after the bats did something and didn't have enough TP to use Jetstream on her. She died 3 times in a row, and that was with a SMN/WHM backing me up with Blinkga+healing. There are some people out there you just can't save. It isn't your fault for not being God, rather the fault is theirs for demanding to party with God.
