  • Benediction macro?

Okay, this is a total newbie question...

I figured out you need to capatalize a spell to get a macro to work... But I saw someone mentioned you can put Benedication on a macro...

I'm sick of (especially when I'm panicing) fumbling with the menu trying to use the skill!!!!

    What is the macro syntax?

    Thanks ahead of time!

      /ja "Benediction" <me>

ja is for job abilities such as Benediction, Divine Seal, Provoke, Steal, etc. ma for spells, ws for weapon skills.

Abilities that wouldn't seem to need a target still need one for a macro, so just use <me>. Most others that obiviously need a target (eg Provoke) you'll want to use <t> for your current target.

The quotes aren't required for 1 word abilities, but they are for anything with more than 1 word in the name, so using them all the time is a good habit to get into.

Using /ja macros with the <me> target will make them go off immediately. That means you can accidentally trigger your two-hour with one slip of a finger. Try <stpc> or <st> to bring up a selection cursor. Make sure you are selected and then hit Enter. You can also cancel out of the action by pressing Escape.

Since Benediction will pretty much be your undoing most of the time (Unless near zone or at the end of a hard fight), you might want to get a few last words in. This is what mine looks like:

          /emote makes the ultimate sacrifice
          /ja "Benediction" <me>
          /p Bring it!

If you're gonna die you might as well look like a tough guy. It's either that or run around in circles praying someone in your party can uber hate the mob on to them

That's true Calianeri, but that's why I have my macros like benediction way over on the 0. I've never hit it by mistake. I would rather have it in a slightly out of the way place but have it go off immediately as opposed to having to hit that extra keystroke. Personal preference I suppose, but something to be aware of nonetheless.

Yeah, macros are all about what works for you. To be honest, I don't have a macro for Bene at all, and I've never felt I needed one. But if I did have one, I'd want that extra step for safety. The situations where I use Bene are never that sudden, so I have time to use the Ctrl-J menu and select it there. Using the menu solves the accidental-hit issue and isn't any more keystrokes than the macro I described.

My main macro set is full anyway, even without Bene.

Hehe my benediction macro looks like this:

                  /p Benediction - I'm gonna die so you don't.
                  /ja "Benediction" <me>
                  /wait .5
/p Bring the pain! Lets do it!

I don't understand why everyone considers Benediction to be such a suicidal ability. You are a white mage - you have defensive magic - make use of it.

There are a LOT of ways to avoid getting pummelled after using it. Here is an example of things that I do:

Situation 1: Party is losing fight, but we can win IF I use Benediction. You can usually tell early on in a fight if this is going to happen if you're paying attention.

Response 1: Cast Stoneskin. Cast Blink. Wait 3 seconds for Blink timer. Activate Benediction. Start recasting Blink immediately. This will buy you at *least* 4 combat rounds where you are taking 0 damage, which is usually enough time to get the monster off of you 99% of the time with no damage.

Situation 2: Party is losing battle very badly. Black mage needs to cast Escape, but will get plastered before he can finish casting.

Response 2: Cast Blink. Activate Benediction. Cast your biggest Cure spell right after the first time you get hit on yourself. This will keep the enemy focused on you while the BLM casts Escape.

Situation 3: Someone (tank, BLM, RNG, whoever) just took a truckload of damage, and is still pulling aggro, but there is no time to cast a healing spell.

Response 3: If you are level 45+... Activate Benediction. Cast Flash. Cast Blink while the enemy is blinded. Since the aggro will be much less in this case, this is usually enough to get you out from under the monster's eye.

I could go on about how you can intelligently avoid taking damage, but the keys are Slow, Paralyze, Blink, Stoneskin, and Flash. They are all very powerful tools - make use of them to protect yourself when the chips are down and you have to use Benediction.

Very good advice indeed - but in most cases I don't use Benediction unless I'm out of MP (bad AoE attacks are an exception) and hence cannot make use of Stoneskin and/or Blink anymore.

See.... this is where I think a lot of white mages make the mistake. The trick to using Benediction effectively is to anticipate ahead of time when you are going to use it. If you are out of MP, that means you've had plenty of time to cast spells. Instead of spending your last 70MP on heals, cast defensive spells, then wait for the right moment to activate Benediction.

You'll get some really weird responses from party members(I certainly do, the first time some people see me pull my WHM-tanking rroutine), but the results are remarkably effective once you learn how to do it correctly.

So you can use benediction every 2 hours?

                            Hmm....thats good to know.
