  • pt config with a smn

I know that lots of ppl seem to hate having a smn in a pt because they are deemed partly worthless.

But I just know that there should be an ideal set up where the smn can help play a key part in other than a cure tank.

What do you all think would be the ideal exp pt set up for a pt with a smn in it? Assume lv 25 - 69 pt.

My idea is a pld/sam/sam/smn/brd/rdm pt.

The sam's and pld can provoke from eachother and with garuda blink + third eye, we'd be able to have 11 free hits in the beginning of the fight. 11 hits would be quite a bit of cure and down time prvention. Assuming that we aren't getting double attacked on every hit, the pld would need to tank very little to make it to the one minute mark where everything can begin again. so 11 free hits every minute. theoritically sound good?

brd is there for the melee buffs and ballad, rdm there for cure support and light nukes/debuffs/refresh, smn for blinkga and cure tank. Pld for self maintaince, and sam's for third eye/extra vokes.

hows that all sound? Would there be enough damage? Is that asking too much of the players? Maybe smn can't keep up in mp with all that blinking?
    75/bst, 60/smn, 51/rdm, 46/whm, 40/blm, 37/nin, 37/thf, 37/war, 32/sam, 25/brd, 10/pld, 7/mnk

I think smn can fit into more setups than people give credit for.

I think it really depends on the tank and if you have a hate controller, oh and the SATA seter. Since I'm a thf I'll try to speak as if it was in my party.

For war tank, I think blinkga would be the best. Also this would prevent a non /nin job damage from setting up SATA/fuidama. And without a thf, hate may bounce depends on the warrior and the damage dealers. Blinkga again would show useful.

Pld needs to take damage to cure itself, I think hastega would make more sense. I don't know how well they fare against incs but maybe end battles with high damage 70+ blood pacts?

    For ninja tank, hastega?

I'm not a smn myself. I'm speaking from a limited experience working with very few. Just trying to get your post attention so I can see some responses from summoners themselves. Like you, I'd like to know more myself.
ANYWAY BIG BEN THINK LIKE THIS ITS LIKE HEY GUYS WHY BE RACIST?? well a good pt with a SMN would have to be this

        WHM/BLM taru mithra hume
        SMN/WHM taru hume mithra
        WHM/BLM mithra hume
        WAR/MNK galka hume elvaan
NIN/WAR taru mithra hume elvaan galka
        PLD/WAR galka elvaan

        or switch the WAR/MNK to either a SAM/WAR or a MNK/WAR

        switch the PLD/WAR for a NIN/WAR or a THF/MNK or THF/WAR

        switch WHM/BLM with a BLM/WHM or BLM/RDM or a RDM/BLM
        or BRD/WHM

        the races are suggestions

SMN would take any extra monsters in the area while the melee take on current target then take on the SMN target while SMN rests for mp the taru whm would take on the tank and the other whm would take on anyother job and backup heal tank the smn would not use cures unless it needed mainly use BPs and have a summon out fighting
        RDM75, SMN73, WHM39, BLM39, BRD35.

I was in a pt with a smn last night, if I remember rightly I think it was:

            smn/whm
            brd/whm (me)
            blm/whm
            nin/war
            thf/nin
            drg/thf

it worked really well, the nin was good so there wasnt much curing to do most of the time, and the thief always used utsemi so rarely lost much hp on pulls. The smn would basically group blink and stoneskin periodically, at the start of fights mainly, and occasionally use leviathn and fenrir for their moves (the healing one, the buff one, and the dmg one, i forget their names). With the extra blink on the nin he didnt seem to lose HP much at all. The thf would basically trick off either the nin or the drg, and if she did it off the drg he'd just jump the hate away anyway.
So the healing was basically shared between the smn and me, we'd both occasionally throw a cure onto the nin if he got hit, or the drg if he didnt shake hate fast enough, and there was no deaths, no problems.

              blink doesnt stack with utsusemi.

in a party with nin its pretty nice to use earthen ward then a fenrir buffs, or earthen+hastega if you dont have fenrir.

when i was in that PT the avatars were tanking ITs till the party could get to them (which would be a few mins.) this was in the dunes also. we were takin on the lizzies there and the 2 WHM were for healers we took on many lizzies at one time the NIN and the WAR would take on a lizzie and the PLD would take on one the SMN would asist the PLD with an avatar me the main healer healed the PLD the other healer (taru also) took on the other ones (they could swap hate) the SMN would only use cure IF one of the WHMs would run out of MP (a summoner is a summoner, not a WHM). The PLD was a galka and had no problem with HP loss the WAR was also a galka the SMN was a taru and used cures only for one battle when we had 4 lizzies on us (PLD on one NIN WAR on one avatar on one other on on PLD) and no one died when the SMN leveledd we let her raise her skill.. We only took on one monster at a time untill it was raised (which it capped REAL fast)

                this party level REAL fast.

You could make a 6 Taru DRG party in dunes and survive.

Anyhow, if you don't like curing: No problem. Play a different job and join above mentioned party. Summoners -are- cure tanks
with a couple abilities to make up for the lack of stronger cure spells and buffs at most levels. There is really no way around this at the moment (that is effective).

Best party combo I had was NIN/WAR, RDM/BLM, BRD/WHM, MNK/X, SAM/X, -> Me. But, lots of combinations can work. It's a matter of other party members working with you and your job.

a summonmer isnt meant a curing job summoners are -summoners- they summon they can do what their subjob can do and if they were ment to be a cure tank they would be able to cure no matter what sub-job they had if they had a BLM sub would they still be a cure tank... no they would be a SMN/BLM if sub is WHM would they be cure tank.. no they would be able to use cures when needed i invite summons to be a summoner not a cure tank i can be that i would have a higher healing magic skill (which they lack in) i would have higher enhancing (which they lack in also)

basically i am tryin to say is that a SMN is meant to be a summoner

Seriously. You are either too low to understand the game mechanics for the job, and/or haven't played it at all.

SMN/BLM=worthless for 99.9% of party configs unless you are subbing it to warp to your home point from Rabao or something.

Sheila wrote an excellent summoner guide which is available on this page and GameFAQs which can teach you more about the job. I suggest reading it if you haven't.

                        Wait.... Subjob?

                        Hey lilschultzy....

                        Pld/Drg?
                        Drk/Whm?

Some jobs aren't really that compatible with a "freechoice" sub. Smn/Blm stops working when you get out of kazham. If you have the patience to go that far....

Dunes, Quif and Kazham tho... Gogo brd/mnk, war/whm, sam/drk and ALL the nice rank2 player combos. I like the obvious avoidings of the risk of tanking. Mnk/Drk anyone?

Was in a real good PT last night (LV31~33):

                          NIN/WAR
                          NIN/WAR
                          SAM/WAR
                          BLM/WHM
                          BLM/WHM
                          SMN/RDM (me)

With 2 NINs, healing was kept to min and done by me. BLMs in 30s are very powerful with their spells. We had 2 Renkeis and MBs. I used mainly Fenrir and Lunar Cry. In 1.5 hours, we gained 5,500.

The only time I use SMN/BLM is when I'm skilling up.
                          RDM 75, BLM 73, WHM 42, SMN 41, RNG 40, NIN 37, DRK 37, THF 25, WAR 20

                            Was doing:

                            mnk/war (me)
                            war/nin
                            pld/war
                            rdm/whm
                            smn/whm (Gryffes)
                            blm/whm

We kinda needed the extra whm subs but the dmg output from the PT despite the lack of the blm sub on the rdm was NOT lacking in most respects.

Gryffes was doing the usual buffing with Fenrir and doing well as the main healer, blm and rdm were nuking and the rdm was taking charge of status curing due to Gryffes being (sort of) main healer.

WHMless and was working fine, didnt notice much of a difference from normal PTs at all but the dmg output from the melees was lovely due to the acc and stat buffs for the melees.

I for one love smns in PTs however, I will always take the one's with Fenrir first and foremost, its not nice vs other smns who dont have a high level job yet but im a melee, I want more dmg output, if you dont have fenrir you wont be doing a lot of good for me sooo...

I do have to say SMN PTs are great though, theyre intresting and add a twist to normal exp.

I can only hope they improve.

nin, drk, rng, blm, rdm, smn is a good combo, 1 blinkga per chain to cover any stray hits, earthen ward when it finally wears off after a fight ot two, rest of the time the smn was messing around with other avatars just trying to not stay at full mp.

smn, blm, rdm or smn, blm, brd are 2 of the best mage back row setups ive formed pt's with.

whitemage is really overkill with a smn, and kills the party's damage potential too much.
