Started as a warrior, but not sure of weapon

I started my warrior which will later become a sam and has since become level 7 and has 14 in the polearm skill.

Since I can't train up the great katana till I get my sam job at level 30, I assume there is nothing wrong with continuing levelling up my polearm. I know it the penta thrust skill has been nerfed, making polearm a useless weapon for a samurai.

Don't waste your time with Polearm any further. Do yourself a favor and start using a greataxe--this is the perfect time to make the switch. Warrior has the highest skill rating in Greataxe, and the early weaopn skills (Shield Break most notably) are way better than anything Polearm has to offer.

I could see using something else if you were intending to carry it over to another job, but as you said yourself, you won't be able to use a Great Katana until you've got Samurai. The only reason that Samurai (used to) use polearms was for Penta Thrust when farming--now that it's nerfed there's no reason for Samurai to have polearm skill.

It really doesn't take that long to train up melee weapon skills, if you're a job that regularly melees in exp parties. You don't need to pre-level your weapon.

Archery, marksmanship and throwing *do* take a long time to level, and parry and shield take a *really* long time. But you're unlikely to want any of those much as a SAM, unless you're going for the unusual SAM/RNG build, or occasionally tanking as SAM/WAR.

As a warrior, use a weapon that warriors are good at - axe and shield if you're tanking, great axe if you're not. Maybe carry a few other weapons for skillchain compatibility (polearm isn't a bad option to have because it gets Transfixion early).

You may be a samurai later - but now, you're a warrior. Play as a warrior, not a samurai wannabe.

: so many new WARs should read that quote. I'm tired of seeing WARs with Scythes, Polearms, ect. because they are going to be a certain job in the future.

Well..

This is a bit offtopic, but....

Levelling war and using scythe is like shooting yourself in the foot and then wondering why it hurts.

If you're going drk, then use scythe when you get drk. You'll have NO trouble levelling it if you use scythe from day1, heck, no problem even capping scythe AND Gsword as drk.

This means if you used axe and Gaxe like a good war instead of a drkwannabe, then you have a bunch of levels in axe "for free", in case you want to experiment later.

And for free is always good. If it's for free, I want 2 of 'em ^^

Kinda stinks though that there's no A grade weapons available to warriors untill... what, 8? (G.Axe and 1h axe)
So it's encouraging people to not skill up with those weapons

when i had a lvl 13 war and i was partying in Valkrum i was hitting the most damage with Lvl 10 great axe and i guy using flame claymore i thought he woudl hit more

hmmmmmmmmmm....... imo lvl axe, or great axe.......... when your in an exp. pt, g. axe and axe are warriors best friend........ but when you have time go out and level your other weapons on monsters you know you can beat...... dont have to cap it just have it lvled somewhat....... its nice to have alot of different weapons capped but the one your gonna need most as a war is either g. axe or axe.

on a side note..... if u got a high lvl friend....... specially a bard.... and hes got time to kill...... ask him to go with you and do some weapon skill up....... nice thing about wars is they can use alot of different weapons..... and at low lvl you can get away with using a B weapon or something........... you sometimes need a mix of weapons in a pt....... saw one with nothing but swords....... weeeeeee fusion all the way i guess. nice to be able to do a distortion at really low lvls, double thrust > fast blade, enpi, slice, etc........ it'll also make it ezier when you start lvling another jobs too..... although u really dont need to do it since if ur gonna be using there A+ weapons........ you'll lvl it fast and hit anyways heh......... just my own opinion :sweat: :sweat: :sweat:

Ok. I'll sell my polearm and buy a great axe.

If I have quite a few gil left I may buy an axe and shield and level that up aswell.

as a war eary lvls.. you should use a g.axe and 1hnd sword.. 1hnd sword for all those fusion skill chains 1-24

Well, you may want to level 1h sword along with Great Axe imho... it should make it a bit easier to get Spirits Within* for future use.

I bet the lvl 63 SAM in my LS wished he leveled his sword skill higher before getting so high :spin:

then again i doubt most parties would allow a SAM to skill up 1h Sword in a xp situation.

*For those that haven't read/experienced this (I got this from the former unfortunately) Spirits Within is used for the harder HNMs since it is a consistent damage and assured hit whereas normal attacks do next to zip on stuff like Fafnir.

Spirits Within at 300 tp does 1/2 the user's HP in damage to the target.. 100% accuracy too

Umm.. Mybe Ppl Just Use Them beacause they like them have u ever thought of that.. u kno ppl can use watever they want so why all this Bickering.. its your own Opinion and your own choosing
