Samurai as a main post-60:
Do you ever wonder why you see so few samurai after 50? Well there is good reason for this. Samurai, and the rest of the expansion classes, either failed to go through the balancing stage of production or were simply not finished. This becomes painfully evident in the late stages of the game. After 60 you will be a second-rate damage class at best, you won't be able to tank, and all of your class perks will become moot.
Firstly, G. Katana is a weak weapon class. Your weapon skills are weak and your accuracy is low. All GK really has going for it is versatility but that doesn’t count for diddly when it comes to getting groups. Oh, and you're pretty much stuck with GK as you'll be worse off by switching to a B-rating weapon.
Secondly, you can’t take hits. Not that I particularly care about this fact. I would just like to disprove the myth that a samurai has defense to make up for an inferior offense. Thanks to those sniper's I have to wear in order to connect with 70% of my weapon skills I have less defense than the WHM I group with. That’s right, a taru mage takes hits better than I. If you focus on offense, like you should, you’ll have extremely poor evasion to go with your low defense. There is no reason not to focus on offense, as you will not tank anywhere near as well as a paladin or warrior no matter what gear you pull out of your hat. Besides, I don’t think anyone picks samurai with tanking in mind.
Lastly, the classes you compete for a group slot with either have your primary abilities through subbing samurai or just don’t need them. Thanks to the low accuracy of GK a monk, dark knight, dragoon or ranger will generate TP faster than you even without TP: store. If they have samurai subbed* then they will make you look like a joke.
*excluding rangers
If you believe that Square-Enix will give the expansion classes a review, or you find it acceptable to play an impotent class, then go ahead and level up samurai. If not, I would advise you to choose another class as you will be very disappointed later on.
{I wrote this not to whine but because I myself would have really appreciated this information before I chose to play a samurai all those months ago.}
