  • BCNM, "The Scarlet King" --- A prelim exam before we fight with Charybdis?

I went to Chamber of Oracles this afternoon to do BCNM, "The Scarlet King" with some of friends in my LS since I got 30+ Kindred's Seals from my farming at Castle Zvahl this week.

The reason we choose this BCNM is because the NM, Purson (Manticore), is similar to Charybdis dropping Joyeuse. Purson always uses both Blood Weapon and Hundred Fists (Not exactly it is but very similar).

There are a few people trying to get Joyeuse in my LS. I know how to beat the NM since many vetran RDMs taught me how to but I just wanted to do some practice. This Manty is supposed to be stronger than Chary (LV81-82) since it is said to be LV85. Anyway, here's the movie I recorded during the battle.

    http://www5.sppd.ne.jp/grendal/FF11/bcnm_scarlet.wmv

We had two BRDs singing Sheepfor Mambo + Dragonfoe Mambo and Advancing March + Victory March. The reason I let them to sing double March is because I found it also reduced recasting time of Utsusemi (about 6 seconds for Utsusemi:Ni).

Well, we won 6 straight times but Kesler (WAR/NIN) was killed, I believe, three times because he did too much We had Taata, LV75 BLM but he wasn't able to make full use of his powerful magic since melee damage isn't strong enough for the tank to hold hate. As a result, he had to MB with Water III...

I found RDM was as important as BRD in that enfeebling spells greatly save the tank's life. Because I'm still LV73, 12 LV behind the NM, only Paralyze landed but the NM was often parelyzed. I wish Slow could have landed...

I was killed once at 5th battle when the tank took 1,200+ damage from Deadly Hold while he was casting Utsusemi. I found Bind was never resisted and kept the NM binded for 10 minutes until he recovered. After I saw he fully recovered, I pressed the wrong macro and I was hit 4 times and killed (took 250 * 4 damage) in a few seconds I couldn't believe we came back but anyway, we defeated it 15 minutes later.

As for rewards, I didn't get anything good but Taata, the BLM, got Balin's Sword and Beetle's Blood, total 1M worth. This is the good one since we don't need any medicine. I'm now encouraged to level my RDM to 75 to have fun here every week. As for other items you can get, check this website.

Now, we seem to be ready to encounter that Octopus.

Let us know how it goes. I hear conflicting stories about how difficult Charybdis is. Some people say he requires 18 people while others say they've killed him with only two others (I specifically remember reading a story about a NIN, RDM and BRD killing it by themselves). I guess if you can evade his hundred fists and keep him slow/para'd, he's not that hard. Good luck!

Also, take a video. I'd enjoy watching it in preperation for my own trip to get one.^^

Hope you made a BST happy with it.

I've seen Charyb killed by 6 people, all were Nin or /Nin and it worked extremely well. It's hard to straight up tank it, +eva works wonders for Charyb.

(I specifically remember reading a story about a NIN, RDM and BRD killing it by themselves).
Before the update, it can be easily done although it takes them 20 - 30 minutes to defeat it.

After that, AoE takes all shadows away and it is said to be a little difficult only with three people. However, some people said it was still possible.

We're going with the same PT config. NIN/WAR, WAR/NIN, BRD/WHM*2, BLM/WHM and myself. I'll post a movie if I can.

            Well done Grendal

Wanted to ask you a question... about overall equipment in EXP and whatever else you do with a lot of people. Dynamis, HNM, and just basic messing around with friends. I notice in most of your videos you are wearing your AF hat and body.

I presume you always have a moldavite earring eqipped, and a phantom earring on the other. And probably a phantom tathlum. My question is this though, when you have your macros, is the only thing you change your staves? Or are you changing your belt/gloves/legs/boots also... If so, what into?

I've always thought of myself endgame as having all the elemental staves, and just wearing my AF body and hat. RSE2 boots(humes fuxxing pwn), Gloves I don't have any idea what I'd wear, and Legs not really either. Probably just errant gloves/legs... That sound like a plan? Or is it normally required to have like 3 full sets of equip... I hate that.

First of all, I guess you may be surprised to see me farming because I look totally different from red mages in general. I may look ugly

As for my PT gears, I can only change five portions because all macros I have are something like this.

              /ma Slow <stnpc>
              /equip main Mythic Wand
              /equip neck Enfeebling Torque
              /equip legs Errant Slops
              /equip l.ring Sapphire Ring
              /equip r.ring Sapphire Ring

I don't like to have a separate one for gear swapping since it requires me of two steps in order to cast spells. I want to act as quickly as possible, you know.

I used to change gloves (like Devotee's Mitts) before I have access to Errant series at LV72 but right now, both Errant Cuffs and Pigaches always stay there.

As a result, gears changed are

              - Main (Mythic Wand or Elemental Staves)
              - Neck (Elemental, Enfeebling, or Enhancing Torque)
              - legs (Errant Slops or Warlock's Tights)
              - Rings (Sapphire or Diamond Ring)

              I'm now 8,000 XP to LV74 and I bought both Thanatos Baselard and Elite Beret. I'm wondering how to arrange new macros for these, especially for Elite Beret ;_;

By the way, I don't have Moldavite Earring because that place is always crowded. I don't usually camp for NMs. It must be nice but it's not necessary in fact. I have 2* Phantom Earring instead when subbing WHM.

Awesome, thanks a ton. That's about what I wanted to hear.

I've never been a huge fan of carrying around 20 diferent articles of gear to change, but I suppose If i setup my macros to change the gear according to the spell of the macro then that won't be a hassle.

If I start casting the spell, then change gear before the spell is done casting, will the spell use the effects of the gear I changed into, or the previous gear I was wearing when I started casting the spell? I've heard rumors of both so.

Last one for ya, do you change your elemental staff according to the element of the debuff or do you just use your wand?

That party will be more than enough for Chary. I have seen him killed with a party of 6, they used a NIN and BRD combo. Good luck with getting your own joyeuse.

As I understand it, the nerf hardly impacted NIN at all, and NIN does not lose all shadows to AOE because his Ninjutsu skill is high enough to avoid that. That is why I believe it is still possible.

Wrong. Mantras AOEs take off ALL shadows and deal damage. It is not absorbed.

You're PT should be able to kill it easily. I did it with WAR/NIN (me), RNG/NIN, NIN/WAR, BRD/WHM, and BLM/RDM. NIN did fine w/ just double mambo, so your shouldn't have any problems at all w/ march (BTW, double march adds 20% haste. Takes off 6 seconds off of Utsusemi: Ichi, and 9 seconds off of :Ni). Just be sure your BLM watches his casting. Not only will he die if he gets hate, he has to watch closely for AOE to stun for the NIN.

I'm sorry, but you're not necessarily correct. Here's the update:
                            http://www.playonline.com/updateus/040914gs7tr3.html

The effectiveness of the ninjutsu "Utsusemi" now relies on the type of attack that is being used on the caster. When attacked, the following five outcomes can occur:

Caster evades attack and one "copy image" is lost.
This normally occurs when the caster is hit with a single physical or magical attack.

The number of lost copy images varies.
This normally occurs when the caster is hit with an area attack such as Whirl of Rage. The number of copy images lost (and extra damage taken) is calculated by taking into account the potency of the attack as well as the caster's current ninjutsu skill level.

All copy images are lost and the caster takes damage.
This normally occurs when the caster is hit with an area attack spell such as Firega.

The caster takes damage without losing any of his/her copy images.
This normally occurs when the caster is hit with breath, or self-destruct type attacks.

The caster is enfeebled without losing any of his/her copy images.
This normally occurs when the caster is hit with an enfeebling spell that does not inflict damage, such as Silence.
All enemy attacks fall into one of the above categories.
Charybdis may be able to take off all of a Utsusemi: Ni's shadows on a 75NIN with fully capped and boosted Ninjutsu, I'm not sure, but regardless, Mantra AOE does not always remove all shadows on a NIN.

Even if it's the case that Charybdis can take off all shadows, a good trio of NIN, BRD and RDM could do it now if they could before the utsusemi nerf, I think. The RDM could sub DRK for stun to avoid the AOE if it's such a problem. I think it would be an interesting challenge.
                            There will be cake.
