Hey guys. What is gravity used for? I know it slows the movements of the monster so I've used it to slow it down to zone my booty away. lol. What is it meant for?

Apparantly the evasion boost is negliable. The biggest advantage I find is it's an alternative to bind when you need to debuff a mob.
Cast gravity then get as many debuffs on as possible before it gets to you. Also very handy for when your fleeing a mob.Hoppkins - Red Mage - Ragnarok

quite the contrary--gravity is a very effective spell. although it only reduces mob evasion by a small percentage, on later mobs that have a huge amount of evasion, that equates to quite a lot. as a matter of fact, it's usually the first debuff i use because it helps renkeis so much. it isn't as good as a break, but in combination with a break and frost, you'll find a mob has trouble evading shots, even from melees in mediocre equipment.
i'm sure somebody has some rep data on later-level mob evasion with and without gravity on that might be kind of impressive, if you consider that some of those shots that would be missing could be upwards of 500dmg, if not 1000dmg, each.
by the way, gravity supposedly reduces mob evasion by 5 percent. i think it may have more noticeable effects on high evasion mobs because 5 percent is a larger number when base evasion is higher, and therefore gravity's effect is more noticeable on later level mobs. sufficed to say, regardless of the mob's level, any reduction in evasion is beneficial to your pt, and that's why it's such a valuable spell in a normal pt setting. There will be cake.

Wow. I've been missing out. hehe.
I guess while we're on the topic I should see if I'm being a good RDM.. Just about every fight, I'll cast Dia, Para, Slow, then Blind. Then I'll start nuking and healing if needed. Then Start casting whatever enfeeble spells wear off. Doing this, I always have my elemental and elemental capped in the 1st 1k exp of my new levels. Is this a good approach to being a RDM?-Will

I try to use Gravity asap because of the long recast time if it gets resisted. I find that is is useful to help melees get TP and to give the tank time to get hate back if the magic burst from a BLM pulls hate off him. Especially Ninja tanks. ><
If there is an add or link, I will use Gravity on the add and kite it along with Sleep and Bind.

As a BLM, I am thankful for the gravity just before a big renkei & burst, or anything that may draw aggro from the tank. I get to kite the very slow mob around my tank without getting hit until he can regain hate. It also is a life saver if the WHM has to to benediction or divine seal = curagaIII and run.Junior Member?

i would drop blind from your debuff list, both ninjas (well good ninjas) and paladins (flash) have blind spells that unless i'm mistaken don't stack w/ blind. been a while since i've been a redmage so someone more knowing please correct me if i'm wrongMarch 23 2004, a day that will live in infamy.

Well...
I've noticed a difference. Our PLD never EVER wants people to cast Blind. The Acc reduction from Flash seems to be much greater than from Blind, our WHm also casts Blind on the occaisions that the PLD can't get the hate off the RNG and needs a big cure to be guaranteed. I'd rather have the PLd be a more reliable hate holder than drop half the usefulness of Flash, which is a moderately costed spell to begin with. Just my opinion, tho.

If you have a white mage at level 45+ who is using Flash along with a paladin tank (who is also using flash), don't bother casting Blind.
Generally speaking, at level 72 with capped Divine Magic, I can Flash a monster for 3-10+ seconds. A Paladin can Flash them for 2-8 seconds, and with a 45 second recast timer (less if the Paladin is Hasted), that leaves you with as little as 12 seconds before the next Flash cycles through and wipes your Blind off the monster.
Also, I'm beginning to suspect that Dia and Dia II only serve the purpose of looking pretty. Unless monsters are pulling out +Defense abilities, I never see much, if any difference in the damage melees are hitting for with or without Dia. Bio I/II seem to provide a visible benefit, however.

Thanks for the info on Gravity, i must admit to my shame I have always thought it just a snare spell and belived the rumours that the evasion debuff component was insignificant.
I'll make sure to give it a real test nowHoppkins - Red Mage - Ragnarok
