  • RDM Questions!

*WARNING* "Im a n00b at FFXI :spin:"

Well.. Not a total "Stupid" n00b, but what do you expect?

When I started FFXI I went BLM, Then got P'O on how boring it was *Lv.10 * Then tryed Monk * Again, Lv. 10* I decided to go RDM, Now Im Lv. 6 and It's not at all boring! Though I can't solo crawlers * * yet, I will soon..

Anyways up to my question. What should my Sub be when I get to that point? I've been reading many threads and posts and seen most of the RDM sub BLM, Now after seeing my BLM friend nuke the hell out of 20 Yags, I almost cried. Also, Im having problems picking a guild. Alchemy sounds fun but so does cooking.. What's your opinion? ^^

I'm not a rdm, so if anyone finds any mistakes feel free to comment. :3

Typical subs for RDM are either blm or whm. Melee jobs do not go well with rdm (although there are a few solo situations which say otherwise), so typically blm and whm are your only options. Its generally a good idea to have both, as some PTs may be looking for a certain sub, as each have their own uses. /blm is more nuke friendly (and warp is always nice), and /whm is more for healing. You get -na spells (used for curing status effects), -bar spells (for element resistance), curagas (for group healing) and that ever-loved divine seal, great for healing after a convert.

As for crafting.. I personally didnt start any crafts (except fishing) until I got my main job over 60, but you can start any time. At low levels, its a good idea to use the crafts found in your home city. This is because you can easily get the advanced support, plus alot of the early materials you need in the guild can usually be found by farming local monsters. But personally, you should do what interest you. ^^ Be warned, goldsmithing and smithing are pretty expensive, and alchemy gets pretty expensive after 60. Woodworking is pretty easy, and I hear clothcraft, bonecraft and cooking isnt too hard.
    Kuno's super cool stats!

If you were bored with BLM and MNK at LV10, you will definetly be bored with RDM, especially after LV41 when you get Refresh. You may be enjoying the jack of all trades RDM now, but be warned that RDM becomes a full fledged mage. This is more so as higher in level you go. The only time I melee anymore is when I go on skill up PTs.

hmm. well, play it for a while. first get a job up to 18/20 and finish your subjob quest.

then figure out what you want.

Most mages sub whm at low lvls for status cures. Doesnt really matter a bunch at low lvls what you sub. Blm wont give you anything you dont have already at low lvls aside from some more mp. You'll learn stone at lvl 1 instead of lvl 4, and thats about the only blm spell you'll get till lvl 24 with drain.

Guild...well...cooking is cheap and it can be useful for your daily playing. Alchemy is cheap too (depending on price of crystals) and can be useful, but not as much as cooking, but its also more profitable at higher lvls.

Well, The reason I Like RDM More than I did BLM Is because I can do different types of spells and things I couldn't of done *Protect, cure etc.* as a BLM, and vice versa if I was a WHM *Stone, Water etc.* Also, I've chosen smithing *In my linkshell, everyone has there own "title" as a crafter, and i could of chosen fishing or smithing, seeing how BORING fishing was after the past 10 minutes I went for smithing, now I know its possibly the most expensive craft but I'll make it. :spin:

Hmmm... level 10 is way too early to pass judgment on any job.

I'd say most jobs don't really show their true "style" until at least level 30; red mage does so even later than most, at level 41.

As suggested above, pick a job you can stick with for a while and get to higher levels. That will give you a first-hand look at what other jobs can do, and how they play.

                  Trust Icemage

Whatever Icemage says, goes. They're always golden when it comes to insight on most anything.

Lv.1-10 can be very annoying with a lot of jobs! You'll find a big hump at Lv.7 or 8. For me it's always been Lv.7, others have said theirs was at Lv.8. For SAM, MNK, THF, and NIN it was Lv.7. For WHM, BLM, BRD, and SAM (again) it was Lv.8. Once you can start joining parties, things change big time.

As far as subjob questions. Assuming you've unlocked the subjob option:

Lv.1-9: Any one you want. Most sub WHM to lower downtime. For RDM, most go with BLM for more MP.

Lv.10-30: Name of the game changes here, mainly due to available /jobabilities.

RDM: BLM or WHM. Elvaans always sub BLM due to extra MP. Tarus usually sub WHM. They have all the MP in the world, and extra WHM spells are appealing.

MNK: WAR. Extra STR, some VIT, and Provoke /jobability.

BLM: RDM or WHM. Either will work, though a vast majority go with WHM. Status removal spells, and AoE resistance spells. (Barfira, Barpoisonra, etc

But you'll need a lot more then just 10 levels to say "this job is boring/sucks/isn't for me." By time you're Lv.30 you'll have a much better grasp on what jobs should sub what subjobs. And if you need to ask, we'll still be here.
