  • Refresh Whore

From what i hear, RDM 41+ are refresh whores, constantly refreshing paladins, drk, whm, blm. I wouldnt really enjoy doing this, but I guess what can happen must happen. One of the main questions i wanted to ask was if I were to become a mithra rdm/nin, would i still be healing as much?

If you want to be the #2 wanted job (after bard) you will bite your lip and become a refresh whore. It's just what people expect from one of the only two jobs that can regenerate the parties mp, sorry.

You won't have to refresh the mp of a Drk every battle.

Refreshing isn't as bad as people make it sound; all you do is press a macro every now and then -.- It does, however, get hard when you have 5 or more people to refresh, not because it's a lot of finger work, but because you have VERY little resting time. I was once in an all mage party and had to refresh 6 people. It went basically like this: Refresh, [Spells],Refresh, [Spells],Refresh, [Spells],Refresh, [Spells],Refresh, [Spells],Refresh, rest for ONE tick of mp(if I was right on the ball with refresh, if I was off I wouldn't even get one tick). Needless to say I would run out of mp very fast in that party

One of the benefits of refresh, in addition to speeding up MP recovery, is the ability to impress people. If you can keep all magic users refreshed 24/7 and the drk at more than half mp, you will get the "OMG you're the best rdm EVAR!" line a lot, even if your enfeebles get resisted half the time. At higher levels, reputation counts a whole lot more than at lower levels. Not to brag or anything, but one time I got an invite while /anon

Good luck in your career as a "refresh whore," I'd prefer to call you a "Downtime killing machine" ^^

      Btw, first post :D

As to what the poster above said. Its not bad.
At the start of fights I usually refresh myself, haste someone, debuff, refresh someone, haste another melee, then continue refreshing the other people that ned it.

            RDM/NIN > RDM/DRK ><

RDM/DRK is only usefull for one thing... Chainspell Stun

            For Grouping
            RDM/WHM or RDM/BLM

            For Soloing
            RDM/NIN

            For Tanking
            RDM/NIN or RDM/WAR

            For Fun
            RDM/SMN RDM/RNG

            For Very Situational Times
RDM/DRK or RDM/PLD(im not exactly how sure how well our Flash would work)

rdm/drk is not so bad. you get your utility spells - drain and aspir.

plus a decent kick in MP. as apposed to nin which gives NOTHING in the way of mp/spells.

so rdm/nin is NOT better then rdm/drk

              HOWEVER. a lvl 75/37 rdm/nin > lvl 75/37 rdm/drk

              i'm talking about pre 70's.

yep, you get to be a whore. but it's cool if you get into a perma party or semi perma party because then you don't have to go out of your way to impress your party members. sure, you impress them when you have the time to glance at the clock while you cast and time it so you're casting while their refresh wears off, but meh. parties with friends are alot less tension filled, and you don't have to worry about your reputation getting hurt because someone doesn't like you and is critical of everything you do. if you want to be rdm/nin go right ahead. i know someone who is one and he stays on the ball with refresh and melees at the same time. excellent backup for when i have to be a ghetto blm and magic burst on skillchains.

I wouldn't solo as a RDM/NIN until level 74/37. RDM/BLM works great with the added job traits/abilities as far as endurance goes. Stoneskin, Phalanx, and RDM Blink work well enough- Phalanx will be able to absorb nearly all damage against you from anything 8 levels or lower.

RDM/DRK also gives you Vorpal Blade. If you have to sub a melee for parties, go /drk... but that should be after you've considered /blm, /whm, or /smn (not in any particular order).

Currently, I have /blm as a party sub and I'm xping /nin just for level 74 soloing. If I want to have a bit of variety, I may sub nin when farming. I really wouldn't recommend /nin for any sort of xp set-up.

Being a Refresh whore isn't so bad. We're, arguably, one of the busiest jobs in the game. People make it sound like you just sit back and hit a macro, but a good red mage must perfect timing and control. We have to acknowledge and keep track of debuffs, MBs, tank HP, and other buffs (I often haste the melees) while never deviating from the refresh cycle.

Plus we always have to look around to check if there's an add or link... If necessary, we should be ready to cast Sleep I/II and -ga spells.

So, I think RDM is basically a commander in case of emergency. If we feel we should escape, we have to do it immediately and if we're not in dangeons, we have to tell WHM to teleport and we'll be a main healer while WHM is casting telepo- spells.

Oh, what a busy job it is but I like it.

I like it when we get an add and I just say, "I'll handle it," and then I'm actually able to.^^

I dont like that BLMs have Sleepga, they have too many debuffs and utility spells for all the plethora of damage spells they have. Anything that is enfeebling magic we should have, but no...
