  • Should I change to Paladin?

for the reasons.. and will they pretty much be satisfied if I do.
I'm already a lvl 11 PLD but for a longterm job

    1. As a lvl 41 BLM, it still takes a long time to get parties and I have been lvl 41 for over 8 months since I haven't played seriously for a while.

    2. I miss the lower levels so that'd be nice, but later on, like at level 40 on up I'd like to be able to get a party fast.. Do Paladins generally get parties pretty fast around the mid levels so I can finally level up far enough to do all the missions in the game?

    3. I want to play a job where I can just go up to an enemy and be wabap attack and kill it. I know PLDs don't do super damage but I'm sure it's not that bad right? I also just like playing a job with swords

    4. COOL ARMOR UPGRADES all the time. With BLM I really don't change armor much but what I miss about warrior is all the armor upgrades

    5. I played a PLD in World of warcraft and it was pretty fun, but the game got boring quick.

So in all, is a Paladin a good rounded job that doesn't get boring and lets me get parties quick enough so I can enjoy this game once again like I did a year ago?

1&2. Blm get parties faster than plds. All jobs (even brds at times) have to wait to party at upper lvls because there are not enough seeking.
    3. Pld's dmg is down there with mages wearing melee gear. If you want to solo stuff with a swd and shield go rdm.
    4. If you can afford it, yes you will change armor a lot.
    5. Pld in WoW couldn't be more different from ffxi's.

All jobs are boring to an extent. It is the same few actions repeated for hours on end. If all you want is faster invites be a rdm or brd, pld is not known for fast invites on most servers.
    Whm 75 Blm 37 Brd 75 | Bastok Rank 10 | Whm > Rdm

wow really? so i'd still have to wait like 2-3 hours for a party in lvl 40's??

I don't want to solo, I just want to be able to kick ass on mobs lower than me
but wow i didn't know their damage was as low as melee damage for mages

      4. If you can afford it, yes you will change armor a lot.

it's how i feel too... Blm is easier to get group. There isn't really enough fo them around usually. And PLD these days really got outshined by Ninja. I have TONs of PLD friends switching over to ninja now.

I'm really curious... getting stuck as a blm for 8 months is really strange. There have to be something terribly wrong.

Do you seek group while /anon? (don't laugh I did that too lol) Do you put any informations in your search comment? What sub job do you use? Are your spells up to date? What rank are you? Have you gotten all the teleport crystals?

no i never use /anon i find it to be silly to put on /anon

i always put stats and stuff in search comments, white mage sub, all spells, rank 5, all teleport crystals lol
          i just don't play much.
maybe 3 days a month :spin:

as you can see it's probably because i have no motivation to just wait around

            >.> My BLM usually gets 2 PTs a day minimum... The wait can varies, but either way, if you can't stand waiting for group as BLM you will have even worse time playing PLD so keep that in mind.

you could be the lowest rank( Rank 1) and still do a good job, or even do better at a job than anyone ever has, and have top of line equipment (rather than gimp equip that some rank 5 newbie has from his high lvl friends holding his hand through all the missions)

If you think rank 10 makes you a better person that someone else your just wrong, ill take a rank 1 over a rank 10 anyday if that rank 1 doesnt suck at his / her job.

Just cause someone has no interest in missions, or wants to leave them for when there like say lvl 60 doesnt mean they are not good at their job. Your inviting someone for the best exp per hour, not because they enjoy the missions, many people enjoy missions, but a fact is many of them suck at their jobs and / or / are gimp equiped/ missing key spells like dispel/ don't know how to play cause they bought their char/ plain suck.

You should only change to paladin if you want a break from your Black Mage, or if you feel like tanking is the job for you. You may get bored of always provoking, and doing low damage, and being the tank, so paladin may not be the job for you, who knows you may like monk more, but find out your having trouble with invites because no one wants you for personal reasons/ misinformation / need a mage.

If you could care less about gameplay and just want to be invited asap, go bard, you might still end up waiting for invites, but overall bard will be the most wanted job for exp, and as long as you do your job correctly and don't make a bad rep for being a not so good or horrible bard, you'll get by faster than a blm or pld. But you might not like singing songs or being very weak in battle and out of battle.

Its up to you, you can eventually try out each job seeing which one you like the best that you will level up no matter how harsh the path to your goals are (whether its to get AF, get lvl 75, do all the missions, etc.)

Hey I'm not saying *I* care about ranks ok? I was trying to find out what is causing him to be stuck for 8 months and that's why I asked.

Still, if I see a level 41 *rank 1*, that's an exception and I care.

It's called the Law of Averages. As a PT leader when you do /sea, you don't know the people seeking the majority of the time. Given a choice between a Rank 1 Lv60 PLD and a Rank 10 Lv60 PLD I would send a /tell to the Rank 10 first simply because there is a better chance that he is a better player, with better gear and more experience.

Of course, there will be times where the said Rank 1 Lv60 PLD just changed nations, but you really can't blame when people look at Rank as a measure of someone's skill through the /sea function. I mean, wouldn't you at least raise an eyebrow if you see a Lv65 BLM that's still Rank 2? Just my 2 cents.

it's just that I'm desperately trying to find a way to enjoy this game because I do love it and I do love Final Fantasy

but being a mage feels like I'm not really taking part in the battles
yet things like Dark Knights don't get invites past 30 or so

I mean aren't PLDs really necessary though? surely they'll get invites?

and is the damage from melee really as bad as the first person said? as low as a mage's melee?

Honestly I think the funnest job for me would be damage dealer, but none of the damage dealers use swords, nor do they get party invites much.. i'd assume a BLM gets more party invites than a DD

I'm excited to do the lvls 10-30 thing again but after I want to have fun too..

what a crappy game if all I can ever do is 1-30 over and over and over

You should try it out for yourself and see. PLD is really easy to solo early on, I could get to level 7-8 killing non stop with no down time at all. If nothing goes wrong you should be able to get to 20 in a few days. (unless of course you get some terrible groups in VK.) Kazam mandies are also very pally-friendly that should get you from 24 to 30 without much problem.

Do RDMs have any melee abilities?
Like I think they can use swords but are they at _all_ good with them?
like do they make a dent?

can they hold their own on mobs 2-3 levels below them (between levels 15-45)

Tanks (including PLD) tend to get party invites fairly well, certainl better than any melee DD.

However, you should take note that PLD seems to have fallen out of favor as of late, #1 reason being lazy mages who'd rather have a NIN tank so they can just sit back and not worry about heals as much. I've encountered quite a few WHM and RDM who refused to level with PLD tank.

                          3. I want to play a job where I can just go up to an enemy and be wabap attack and kill it. I know PLDs don't do super damage but I'm sure it's not that bad right? I also just like playing a job with swords
Your damage output will be low vs exp mobs. Compared to a melee DD's damage, yes it will be that bad.

                          4. COOL ARMOR UPGRADES all the time. With BLM I really don't change armor much but what I miss about warrior is all the armor upgrades
Can't go wrong there. PLD (and WAR and DRK) get access to what I think are the coolest armor sets in the game.

                          5. I played a PLD in World of warcraft and it was pretty fun, but the game got boring quick.
Do note that the WoW PLD is very very different from the FFXI PLD. I'd say the closest FFXI job to a WoW PLD is actually the RDM.

This is a bit off topic but as far as WoW goes, I'll eventually play that again someday.. but how long does it take to get to level 60? cuz at around level 15 i was bored out of mind and kind of missing the party atmosphere of FF10.. is that game party based at all? Like can you get parties and rack up exp quicker that way?
