Low prices in general are still mostly beneficial, because you still get just as much from beastmen, treasure chests and quests that give gil. (You also pay just as much for purchases from NPCs, but only mages have to buy things from NPCs.) Also, of course, deflation increases the value of everyone's gil they already have.
Any job can be ridiculously expensive if you want the absolutely best possible everything (yes, the Kote fall in this category). If you just want pretty good gear - good enough to earn good exp if the party is skilled and works together well - you can generally outfit most jobs for under 100K at least up to level 50 or so (not counting the costs of spells, ammo or ninjutsu tools; jobs that require those really *are* more expensive.) And of course 50-60 you start getting AF armors, which are always at least pretty good.
Don't be intimidated by the rich players (almost all JP, it takes years to accumulate that kind of money) with a level 75 other job. You don't need millions of gil to do your role well; SE just added some stuff that gives *slight* improvements so that rich players could show off.
