You target the person you want to use cover on and stand in between them and the monster.

      Cover

That seems a little difficult while in the middle of combat. If not then, why else would we use this? Or is it simply a worthless ability that no one uses?

I first thought it was somewhat useless as well when I first got it. It's not, it definitely has it's uses. You just set a macro to Cover someone quickly when you position yourself between the monster and person and voila, you're taking damage for them.

Cover is an extremely useful ability, especially in clutch situations...

cause you never know when a secondary damage dealer (MNK or RNG for example) will do something that does a little more damage than expected and they start getting smacked down...

I kinda have this thing where if a PLD has protected me with cover at anytime during a PT, my title for them goes from ƒiƒCƒg‚³‚ñ to ƒiƒCƒg—l

once you figure out how to put it to use, it can be extremely helpful in bad situations

Here's a Cover macro that I use (credit goes to http://www.zephyr.dti.ne.jp/~miara/ff/):

              line1: /grin motion <st>
line2: /p <lastst>, Using Cover in 2 seconds, stand behind me.
              line3: /wait 2
              line4: /ja "Cover" <lastst>

Line1 will let you select target to Cover. Line2 will notify the target (in party chat or you can change it to /tell) to get behind you. Line3 will wait two seconds before activating Cover. Line4 will activate Cover on your selected target.

Also, it's much easier when your party understand how Cover works. My close friend (a WHM) who I party with all the time alway stands behind me when she is ready to do Divine Seal+Curaga/Cure III and I know that's my cue to activate Cover.

Only problem that I had withcover doesn't really last a long time, i think they should really up the time or give it a faster recharge rate.

Other than that, it rocks for when you lose the hate.

cover works great when some situations caught u off guard.. when voke/bash's not rdy and u need to save a rng/drk or some mages.

My cover macro contains a /party msg to inform whoever's gonna get covered and the actualy cover macro. This ability has to be macro-ed because it takes too long to go thru the menu bar while the mage's getting pounded. heh

I just edit my macro to whoever's most likely to need the cover in each pt i get in. like.. drk or blm if i can't keep the aggro. (it happens sometimes )

/p Covering playername in 2 seconds, stand behind me.
                  /wait 2
                  /ja Cover Name

Cover is amazingly useful when you have good communication between the PLD and the aggro-drawers (WHM, BLM, RNG, DRK in particular).

As a WHM, I sometimes get in situations where I am forced to use large healing effects (Divine Seal + Curaga, Curaga II, Cure IV, Benediction, etc.). In those cases, I'll often think ahead of time and do the following:

                    (1) Run directly behind the PLD
                    (2) Activate Divine Seal (if I'm not using Benediction)
                    (3) Activate "/p Cover me!" macro
                    (4) Cast large healing spell
                    (5) Start casting Blink

The Cover effect lasts for 5 seconds - just long enough for me to finish casting Blink, which gives me 4-5 combat rounds where I will not get hit, and is usually enough time to draw aggro away from me. Other jobs can use similar tactics.

The key is that it is OTHER players who should be making use of YOUR Cover ability - not you. A PLD should try not to move - doing so ruins attacks for Thieves (Sneak Attack, Trick Attack), and often forces mages to spend time repositioning.
