hello all, I was wondering would it be feastible for a pld to use the elvaan rse at lvl 30, instead of the regular equipment that has higher defense but less stats? I had my eyes set on the hand and foot rse, for the mp boost. I was wondering if it was worth the defense hit.

Hi Baka, I'm Galka but I think I can answer this question. The reason I wanted RSE is same as yours : MORE MP =)
Basically before I had any RSE, I used a hairpin, and I carried a royal squire helm in my inventory. In battle after I cast cure II I would use a macro to switch to my helm for more defense. However, now that helms are granting more defense, it's just not practical to sacrifice 14ish defense for 15 MP.
So now I have switched to RSE. Right now I am only using gloves (the best one for Galka, +32 MP and only 2 less defense than Royal Squire Gloves). I hope to get the shoes soon as well. Even at level 40 when you get Iron Msk gloves and shoes, the defense difference total would be like 10-11 defense. So what I am going to do is use both RSE gloves and shoes at first, and whenever my MP goes below a certain point, I will switch to the Iron Msk equipment for more defense.
However, even at my level, I don't find myself in much need of MP generally. I rest when the mages do, and since I get TP faster than other melee (due to the +2% TP with every hit from monster), I can afford to rest and lose some TP. So I might actually just use RSE gloves instead of both RSE gloves and boots.
The loss of defense from RSE pants and body armor for the MP you get isn't worth it for Galka, so it definitely can't be worth it for an Elvaan (who has less defense because of less vit, less hp, and also the RSE grants less +MP I believe). This is just my opinion though, and I encourage you to try experimenting yourself... just pass on the results here so we can all benefit ^^I believe in karma. Anyone I treat badly probably deserved it.

No problem.
By the way, in case you are wondering, you can choose which piece of RSE you want. Basically, you get the magical pattern from the dungeon chest when it is your race's week (be sure to check www.manakun.com/hari) and have the quest in your log. Bring back the magical pattern (key item) to the goblin in lower jeuno, and he will let you choose between 4 RSE pieces (or less, you can't have the same piece made twice ^^). I didn't know about this and was worried I would get the useless pants or body RSE
I believe in karma. Anyone I treat badly probably deserved it.

Yeah I made those macros long ago so I can't recall perfectly, but I believe /equip slot "name" works. Slot would be whatever it says in the equip menu, like head, body, or whatever (can't remember exactly). Then just put the name of your item in quotes (case sensitive). I also add a line such as /echo MP up, DEF down! or something of the sort.I believe in karma. Anyone I treat badly probably deserved it.

Wow Mac, you almost make it sound like we're the inferior Paladin race up there. :p
By less defense due to vitality you don't mean less raw defense, you mean not able to mitigate hits as well due to a slightly lower vitality right?
And how are you gaining +2% more TP than other melee? And at what level are you that you feel MP doesn't matter much? In my opinion MP is very critical to Paladins, especially at my level.

Huh? I never insulted other races in my post o_o What are you talking about? I was just saying RSE body and pants can't be worth the defense loss, esp for an Elvaan.
Galka has more VIT and HP, this is obvious. I don't show these stats to say "GALKA > ELVAAN" because that obviously isn't true. 2 VIT = 1 DEFENSE, and every base stat also affects a secondary parameter (e.g. DEX with critical hits, STR with max damage), and people have told me VIT actually reduces the damage you take after the DEF calculation.
Tanks get +2% more tp every time the monster hits you, +1% tp if you block it with your shield. Due to this and the fact we get 7% TP per our attack (with bastard swords), I always have more TP than any other melee classes.
As for races, I still think Elvaan is the best race for PLD... I'm not sure where you got the idea I was looking down on you. However, I wanted to be a Galka because... well let me be honest with you. I started out as a Galka THF because I loved the idea that I could stand behind a Taru WAR and trick attack the monster, and somehow the monster would think the Taru did the damage ^^
However, after speaking with many high level players in my LS and reading several forums, I believe Galka can make perfectly fine PLDs. Elvaan is still the best to control the hate, but with the right equipment (along with good micromangement), Galka can manage hate perfectly fine.
I'm still too low level to confirm this, but at level 34-35ish (I forgot x_x), I lose hate maybe... once every 5 battles, and that's only for a second or so. I make do with my lower MP: in fact, I never ever have to use an entire MP pool on a monster. I only rest when the mages rest (or if someone else is pulling), and my lower MP pool never affects the quickness we fight monsters and get xp chains.
Sitting less than an Elvaan who may not conserve MP as well means that I always have TP to join in the renkeis.
I did not want to be an Elvaan at all because personally I think they are ugly. I know most people think Galka is uglier, but this is just my aesthetic opinion ;P
Also, 2 high level PLD I know and other high levels in my LS told me that max MP pool becomes much less of an issue with Refresh and Ballad at higher levels.I believe in karma. Anyone I treat badly probably deserved it.

I was just razzing you about the galka vs elvaan thing. :p
When you mentioned the +2% TP I thought you meant you got +2% over other Paladins, I appologize about that. I either read too fast or wasn't paying attention or both. I'm at work so I guess I sped through it too fast.
I guess the MP thing is a matter of play style more than anything. Sometimes I drain all of my MP but thankfully I always have my trusty redmage sidekick with me so I have constant refresh. But to be honest sometimes I have one hell of a time keeping hate off my darrknight and sometimes my whitemage. He likes to Cure 4 me, and the darkknight goes apeshit with his attacks so it can be a real struggle and thats when I use the most MP. Maybe you'll start to have problems with with plenty of -hp +mp gear out there, Galkas can pull it off fine I'm sure.
As for the 2 vit = 1 defense, I wasn't aware of that, I'm going to go check that now.
Thanks for the heads up on that.

Ah, good points. Like I said, I'm not high level yet at all, so I can see what you mean that it would be hard to hold aggro while your damage dealing partners become even more powerful. However, I also hope that my inherently high HP and VIT/DEF will reduce the need of high level cures from my WHM.
As for the other damage dealer occasionally doing high damage, I think this isn't always a bad thing when you have a THF, it just requires communication. This is what I did with a THF who didn't know how to yokodama, only fuidama:
Whenever the THF's fui was refreshed, the DRK would Last Resort, Darkness, and WS. The monster would turn around, and then the THF would then fuidama the monster back on to me. Result: 2 very high damage hits, and hate back on the tank, without a need to use any heals. If needed, I could just throw a low cure I or II, or shield bash, or sentinel along with Provoke.
Maybe this will get harder as I get high level, I'm not sure. I can only speak from my experience. I still think Elvaan > Galka, but I also think a Galka can hold his own.
About the 2 VIT = 1 DEF, this is easy to test. Just eat a tortilla (+4 VIT) and you'll notice your DEF increase by 2. VIT also affects a secondary parameter but people seem to be confused what it is (all base stats affect multiple parameters). The general opinion is that it reduces damage after the armor DEF reduces damage, so that would help Galka a bit more.I believe in karma. Anyone I treat badly probably deserved it.

Yah I just took off my 2 +1vit rings a bit ago and sure enough 1 defense poofed. Put on my IM Armet which is 17def 2vit and sure enough 18 defense showed up. So that's some pretty good info before that I hadn't heard or noticed. Appreciate the info about that Mac. You bring up a good point about having higher hp and slightly higher defense. WHM won't be using quite as many heals so possibly his hate will be kept down a bit, but those crazy darkknights... Man they need to take it easy sometimes.

Totally agree... let me know your experience in later levels when you party with RNG with sidewinder x_x
By the way, what is the effective method in using Cover?I believe in karma. Anyone I treat badly probably deserved it.

My macro for cover is /ja "Cover" <st>
My reason for this is because you have to select the person you want to cover then stand between him and the monster. Duration is something like 5 seconds I think. I actually use it a couple times a night.

using <stpc> would be a better choice, coz using just <st> also selects mobs' and npc's, which is pretty much useless in that case.
btw..., i don't mean to insult anyone by saying this, nor to be rude, but "Baka" means "stupid" in japanese, and given the nature of this game, i believe u should be warned of that. of course, i do understand that u in no way meant that, as everyone here would agree.
