Paladin/White Mage?

Do any of you think a Paladin sub White Mage would work? I've been contemplating what sub to use for a Paladin because I know I want to be one and I wanted to be a WHM. What I've come up with is that the Paladin would have more of the protective spells a WHM gets early on and if I used a 1 Handed staff w/ shield those skills would transfer over to the Paladin. I'm just wondering if it will work because things that work in my head don't exactly work in reality. I know that a Warrior sub would be best but I'd rather not walk that path if at all possible. I figure the WHM passive bonus to Magic Defense might help the Tank aspect of the Paladin especially if I'm helping my party fight a summon (like Shiva.) Any ideas?

Yes i would say it works.
I remember before people were talking about this and they said it would be nice. Cause once you get high enough you could Raise people and that my friend is usefull as hell.
Say you Whm dies but you finish the monster off without him. Yee Haw you save the day by raising him and getting back his exp and then some.
As a bounus your charisma is massavley high thus making the items you buy cheap as hell.

Uhh, no. A paladins main job is too take damage, as a whitemage you not only sacrifice taunt, but you lower your defense and would take more damage. To put it bluntly, this combo would suck

for level up PT, it only works if you're a tarutaru and probably have a THF and another taunter with you.
Tarutaru got enough MP to do a lot of heal. but not quite enough HP to taunt and stay safe.....
other race tho they are strong enough to take hits. /whm would mean nothing for them

for solo, /whm is for sneak and invis. it will help you get to the tough place you can't normally get to.

Even that is only available @ 50+ though

Not true. I checked on the stat calculator before and the Vitality of a Paladin/White Mage and Paladin/Warrior are exactly the same at lvl 65 (72 I believe) the only thing that's different is the AGI and DEX I think. And the Warrior sub would add points to STR that I wouldn't need since Paladins do nothing for damage and aren't supposed to be dealing damage anyway. And like I said the WHM passive bonuses to Magic Defense would help reduce damage from magic attacks. Sure I lose Taunt which is the most useful but I would get Cover later on and there are other ways to gather hate. And then there's also the WHM passive ability Auto Regen to help out with taking damage.

DO NOT TREAT THE STAT CALCULATOR LIKE A STATS BIBLE

Those numbers are abstract, not official. Subbing WAR gives you passive defense powerups, defender, and taunt. You will not be a good tank as a PLD/WHM... you're only going to increase your MP, that's it. If you want to use WHM be a WHM/BLM.

Heh that's a good reminder.....well i'll probably end up testing it out anyway and let this thread die. I've got to talk to my friends anway so I can figure out what they're gonna do. Last time I talked to them a WHM was needed.

Know what, go ahead. Be a Pld/Whm and see how far you get. Unless you plan on soloing the entire time, which is near impossible.. you'll get nowhere. Very few would invite a Paladin without taunt, and thats just fact.

There is ZERO point to subbing whitemage with a paladin, unless your in a special kind of PT where you need to invis/sneak yourself @ lvl 50+.

#2- It will be very hard to 'try' it, when every PT that invites you asks you to change your sub to warrior

I asked so I could see other peoples' opinions and to see if I would change my mind but from what I've seen I haven't seen enough to change my mind. I'm considering doing Warrior but I still want White Mage. The game hasn't even come out yet so I've got plenty of time to decide.

Come on, seriously, if you want to heal be a WHM. Eventually your attack power will be crap and your only duty will be to taunt and be a backup mage. Take away the taunt and you're just a crappy mage that's not good for a party.

Do as you wish, but don't say FFXIOnline didn't try to help you.

For example, Hiro, a really stubborn guy here thinks DRK/MNK is the best combo in the game because of counter, but he doesn't notice he's not going to be taking hits so how the hell is he going to counter? It makes it a really bad combo for parties, and parties are what count. Do whatever you want when you solo, but be at your best when competing for a spot in a party... or be doomed to even less party invites than a DRK.

That's all I got to say, it's up to you.

I won't complain that you guys didn't try to help me. I'm not stupid like that. By all of your reactions I think I'll be having 2 characters, one being a Paladin/Warrior and the other probably a Summoner/White Mage. Does that make you happy? The reason I posted the thread was to get info and I got info, even if it was given in a pissy sort of way. It helped me amke up my mind though, which is what I wanted.
