Bad tank? Bad monk?

Well.... I had this problem recently, at lv52(APPARENTLY)...

I found that, no one can tank... when I am there.. >_>; I do minimum action in combat, I only use focus(because, even for mithra, monk's accuracy sucks), and berserk+boost only when I use WS... but I always get enough hate that even provoke by main tanker can't pull the mob back, unless they use cure, flash or ninjutsu or job abilities.... <_<;;

Now, is this my fault for stealing hate? I even stole hate by using berserk+boost+WS, with no focus(because it was still reloading)... so what am I to do? attack less..? kept flippin my character back and forth to create delay between attacks..?
or there are PLD, NIN or tanker jobs players that still don't know how to tank at lv50+....?

You will get some crap tanks, and some great tanks. Find the good ones, and hope you stay withen the level range.

1 question, and 1 suggestion.

Do you pull? I've seen several monks pull with Chi Blast, which would be fine, save for the fact that they boost it up so it does 200+ damage before the tank ever sees the mob. This obviously associates a lot of hate with you that will cuase it to turn when you do [boost + a big burst of damage].


The suggestion you probably already do... but i'll say it anyway. Use focus right before you engage on the mob. You gain no hate from using it, as long as you use it before you take your first swing. If you use it after you've already attempted to hit the mob (even if you miss) you get the hate buildup.

i dont think u should be too worried about grabing hate it inevitable. jus keep dealing massive dmg. u can take a few hits. usually when i grab hate i hardly even get hit much usually i jus counter, dodge or gaurd the attack and pld or nin gets the hate off me. my suggestion is get a thief in the party and u jus backup tank while thief fuidamas on pld or nin. if u dont feel too comfortable tanking for a little bit u can grab some vit+ rings and put them on when u have to tank for a short while.

btw i like tanking as a monk i find it fun. i ve actually tanked in an exp party in the 60s when our pld DCed and we decided to get exp with out him cause he took 2 hours :sweat:

Erm...Monk Acc is actually relatively high. :/

Before 60, holding hate is easy enough for a PLD,
the one you had just sucked...hard.
If it was a Nin tank, you can't really fault them too much for not being able to hold hate.
Being a good Nin takes MUCH more effort than being a good PLD. ;[

Outside of a massively lucky hit, unless you must provoke off the mages
or set up for Fuidama, you should NEVER get hit.
Your tank should know how to do his friggin job by now,
don't assume it's your fault.

Side Note: You shouldn't have to waste you space and money
to compensate for the weakness of another when it's outside of your role.

i got the same problem... when i get ahead of the pld on hate theres not much i can do but take damage... and i often times do...

although most mages are smart enuff to realize it's not my fault... i think of it as a game.. kinda funny to me...

last pt pld, mnk, drk, whm, rdm, blm, i was basically tank... while the drk never got hate

i thought about switching main to pld for awhile due to lack of tanks, or good ones for that matter, but i can't switch from mnk

I won't blame NIN, they aren't that much a good tank once they got their utsusemi recast interrupted, so a few second breath time for NIN is fine... but err... PLD? I thought PLD supposed to have dominant hate on themselves...

Well, Glad to know I am not doing anything wrong... I use minimum skills to avoid hate stealing, that's why I only use focus, berserk+boost+ws...

As for MNK's accuracy, I don't know for sure, I only played mithra, I still hit a lot even with evasion up on monster, and none of my friends played monk... but so far I see so many elvaans whining about MNK's accuracy..so lol..

I've found myself switching to life whenever focus is down to make up for lost hits. As for taking a couple hits I have a nice lil marco that comes after my raging fists.

Works wonders for the small time I have hate, lowers my damage just a lil bit without having to disengage the mob, and once the pld has built enough hate over me I cancel out defender and go back to swinging.

Sometimes even the best pld wont be able to keep hate after a 210-500 shot chi blast + damage while building tp + a raging fist while berserked and focused are on once I get that tp. And you just have to take a couple hits. I have 1372 hp a couple hits wont hurt me to much ^.^

I always think of it this way. If I'm not building enough hate to be 2nd to the pld that means someone has to be next in line and I rather that person next in line be me then the white mage. Because a 800 dmg sickle slash to me is a lil over half my hp. But a 800 dmg sickle slash to a tarutaru whm is probably death.

Its kinda flattering to steal the aggro off of the pld, lol. if you have a decent whm, you should be fine until the pld gets his act together tho

There's few Paladins I know that seem to enjoy letting me tank. I wouldn't brag about stealing hate, it's not a good thing. Then again I don't like to hold back just because the tank sucks. Just be careful when to use your WS. Some people just don't try hard enough I guess.
