On Ifrit there actually seems to be a lack of Dark knights of late around level 40 so I an informed. It seems alot of them are getting sick of getting out damaged and going with whatever....oh hell, flavor of the week they decide to choose.
Stick with it. It's tough. People will pass you up in damage. But the most important point is that you have fun in what you do. You WILL find a party...it may just take longer. A bunch of people looked at Dark Knight, the Armor, the weapons and decided Ooooohhh...This will be cool. Not fully understanding the Job.
Patience.
It takes time in all things. You will succeed. In the meantime, if you are having what you feel is a bad day to find a party, go out and farm, Fish, craft, do something to relax your mind. All of the game is not entirely based on how much exp you can get everyday, but how much fun you can have with it doing whatever you choose.
Remember, anything worth acheiving, is worth working towards.

patience is 1 thing..and if people outdamage dark knight..then they choose them over us.........i waited a whole RL week atleast to get from 30-31 -_- and havnt gotten a party since..ive gotten 2k xp soloing yuhtunga mandragoras..but its slow and boring...so i go level a new class....ive wanted to be dark knight because they take their own life (soul eater) to kill the enemy....and have badass spells that drain the opponents life to replenish ours....but now that ive learned DRG and MNK and (possibly) SAM does more damage then me....i realize i will never get a group unless i am the leader...and there is lack of whm and rdm at my level on the odin server {;~_~;}
^up there english sux because i am in no classroom...i am in the comfort of my own home and its more convenient to not use punctuation^Minusdkp (Hades) 75WHM, 75MNK, 71DRK, 49NIN

Aye, on Ifrit we are running into this problem as well.
Kazham constantly screams for White mages and Red mages, heck, practically any healer. Because most of the white mages or red mages have hit 30 and tried going summoner or some other advanced job. There isn't much of em left.
It's rough...I know. I don't touch Kazham with a 25 foot pole. You could attempt Korroloka tunnel. A member on my linkshell said that is roughly the level one can attempt as in comparison to Kazham. I don't know about Yhoator tho. Sorry.

As with all classed, it mostly comes down to the character. At about 60+ a monk will start to push out slightly more DPS than a Darkknight due to Martial arts starting to show its colours, and stuff like Asure fists and such.
If no Abilities are used , then the monk will come out on top. However if a smart drk uses his/her abilities to their full extent, then the drk will lead slightly. Just as previous posters said.
It should also be noted though that where Drk's are slightly more reliant on skills to do their damage, Monks seem to heavily rely on Str as they do not posess the Drk's strength nor attk up passives.
While leveling my Monk I was fighting beside a Dragoon, and usually at that Level Dragoons equal a drk if not a bit more due to Wyvern *and drk's not having Souleater at that point, nor bezerk if war subbed*
I was on my Monk with all up-to-date equipment fighting beside an out of date Drg *Armor and Accesorry wise*. Both of us Using Mithkabobs, myself a Mithra him a Taru.
Even with his Wyvern, I easily outdamaged him. Where he would hit an IT for about 35, I would for anywhere from 40-55 *combined fists*, albeit a bit faster also. However I do find that while playing my monk that +dmg equipment are even more important to get descent damage than while leveling my Drk.55Drk/54War/34Monk/16Rdm/10Sam/10Thf/5Whm

another point,
its really hard to tell if a class gets chosen "over" you. Most of my friends are DRK's, drg's, mnk's, sam's, because half the time they are the only ones in my LS's that are free enough to chat (due to lack of PT's).
The fact is that ALL melee classes, except the tanks, have a hard time finding PT"s due to competition.
I believe Awntawn said this. And i agree, here is how I would set up my "ideal PT"
Ill classiy the slots by roles, and the Jobs that will fill them.
Healer - WHM, RDM, SMN (last resort)
Bard- BRD
Tank - PLD, NIN, WAR, SAM (last resort)
THF - THF (not really neccesary anymore....but i still think they are good)
DMG dealer - MNK, SAM, DRK, DRG, RNG, BLM, SMN, THF
Gee...which role has the most candidates?!
usually i like my PT like this.
1- WHM
2- BRD
3- PLD
4- MNK (me)
5- BLM
6 -THF, or RNG.....usually it ends up just choosing between another DMG dealer...or another healer.
So w/ about 6-7 classes all competing for 1-2 slots per PT, your going have more time sitting in jeuno doing nothing compared to your WHM or BRD friend.hi

EXP Gainer: BLM :p
i notice a HUGE difference when there is a good BLM in my party....same when a shitty one is there.
How are BLM's at higher end? i hear lots of mixed things about them...one 65 sam told me that BLM is only for missions or HNM hunting?hi

If a level 3 black magic spell hits on an MB, it does 500~700 damage... even resisted it does around 350 damage... And on a regular basis the numbers aren't too far from that... BLM only gets better and better at higher levels, you just gotta know what to cast on what, and when.
