  • Question about the element staves

Hi, I recently bought most of the staves (not +1) besides the light staff. I was wondering are these staves useful? Someone in my recent party said that they arent really useful and you should use Ice and Dark staff only. Should I just resell these staves or is he giving me bad advice? Oh and the guy also said the Earth Staff and no hidden effect is this true? Right now I have a macro that switches staves on each spell like for example:

    /equip main "Thunder Staff"
    /ma "Thunder II" <t>

I have that for every element. Can anyone give me any advice of what I should do? Sell or keep them?

    Thanks.

Keep them. Each staff gives a 1o% or so damage bonus to it's respective element wich can be much more effective then the Elemental Skill bonus on the Ice. Note however that it also confers a 1o% damage reduction on your spells of the opposing element. So if you i.e only used Ice Staff your Blizzard spells would be prodding buttock, while on the other hand your Air spells would be gimped.

Yes. This includes Earth too. Your friend fares with lies and trickery.

Ice and Dark are the ones you need to get. You won't be laughed at if you don't have the full set, but it is definetively something to invest into if you have the cash.

Only staff that you really won't need as a BLM is the Light Staff.

Oh, and if you have a SMN the staves also reduce the mp cost per second from the avatars.

Ok cool so a staff macro for each element for example:

      air
      /ma Wind Staff
      /ma Aero II <t>

      then another for lets say

      /ma "Thunder Staff"
      /ma Thunder II <t>

Is a good thing? Basically I carry all 7 staffs on me and have a macro to equip each staff before I cast the spell. I am doing things correct right? Thanks. Also is there a hidden stat on the earth staff? Oh and he wasnt my friend lol he said he has multiple level 75's with a level 75 blm as well =\

        /equip main "Wind Staff"
        /ma "Aero II"

        would work better.
Just a typo I assume as you had it right in the first post.

Yes, that is a very good strategy. Most BLM's have equipment changing in their macros for staves and later on other gear like Black Cloak, AF, Errant, etc.

And wether he was a multiple 75'er I'd take with a pinch of salt. If he was running around in the best gear for his level and munching down on HQ food then sure. But if he was gimped and couldn't cooperate with the party worth shit, hell no. xD

I have met a fair share of those people, even one guy who claimed he was a GM, but he had left his armour behind in the MH... He was an Elvaan.

Ok sometimes there is a delay in my equip macro (lag?) like it switches in the middle of when I am casting the spell. Will it still take effect if it switches in the middle or does it have to be before I cast the element spell?

          Example:

I cast my spell and my macro switches the equipment at about 40% into the cast. Will the staff for that element still work?

And yes that was a typo

Yes he actually said he called a gm (phone?) and told me that the gm said not to use earth staff for stone 3.

That has no effect, system and stat wise the staff has been equipped, it's just the model that lags behind because the casting animation runs at the same time.

I'd wish they could fix it as the casting pose is cool... ;\

Why the Earth Staff should be exempt of this rule is beyond me... I suspect he's bullshitting.

I have all 8 staves. They work equally well with their respective magics. Whoever told you Earth Staff has no hidden effect (a) doesn't own one, and (b) has never seen one used.

                Thanks guys =)

Ya he prob is a big bser. Since he also said he has the highest magic hit on the server when he only uses Ice Staff go figure.

So why is Ice Staff so cheap in comparison to the other staves?

Its 30k on Bahamut, compared to the others which are 100k or so. I believe that Fire was about 35-40k...

                  Do not understand why...

whoa wtf, Bahamut prices are low. Dark staff is still 250k, water 190k and so forth. Ice is 100k atm. all HQ staffs are about 1million and Jupiter's staff is nearly 1.6mil now... Prices of EVERYTHING are going up. This on on Pandemonium server btw.

My guess is that among the HQ staves Ice is the most demanded one (as Blizzard is generally the most common used spell, plus the elemental magic skill on it), so crafters make a lot of them.. lot of Ice staves up on AH = low price. >.>

i don't really use macros for any of my damage spells (because i am really uncoorinated and can't use more than one macro set per job), so i constantly change equipment manually, and as long has the gear is equipped before the end of the cast time you will recieve full effect...

example: [starts casting thunder iv] ...ctrl+e >> replace pluto staff with jupiter staff; replace dalmatica with weskit; replace elite beret with af hat, etc, etc...you will still get the damage bonus from all of that gear as long as it's equipped before the spell hits the target...

Actually, ice becomes much less useful later on because the enemies you fight will generally be weak to fire and thunder while your melees pump out light chains. Also Thundaga III is the strongest spell you will get as BLM. Which is why Jupiter's Staff has such a high price tag.

Currently, I carry 4 pairs of pants, 4 suits, 3 hats, 3 neck peices, 3 pairs of gloves, 4 rings and 7 earrings to be used for various situations (+int, +elemental skill, +enfeebling, +% dmg modifier, or +MP). I use more than 1 macro for each spel cast since there are so many things to swap in and out. I really doubt if the same can be accomplished manually on some of the shorter casting spells.

BTW, I have 5 active macro sets now for the BLM job.

                              E.staves are great.

keep in mind that each staves will lower its opposing elementals potency...

Like Ice staff will weak Wind damage by 10% while boosting Ice damage by 10%... if you forget what staff weakens what spell...

theres a slight reminder on the staff itself. the elemental defense you get from the staff, is the dmg you will deal weak dmg with.

(i hope that last part made sense)
Ice staff gives 20Wind defense, making your Wind potency -10%

oh, and about the cost... well when people first found out about ice staves. there was a major hype ... and people mass purchased ice and dark staves. seems ice staff more than dark staff. and there.. was just a major increase in supply > demand.

and so ... theyre just cheap. because theres too many of them for the price to be real high at a steady pace...

i think. it sure seems that way. because price history of other staves have severl day gaps.
