I'm a Blackmage and I'm not sure what route I want to take as my second job. Ideas? I want to own, be able to solo, plus be able to join a party with no problems. Help!

If you want to "own" and "be-able to solo stuff" Then you want a RDM sub. At Lv 64 of course. At that level, your sub will be 32 (If you work hard constantly to update your sub on abilities, spells, and leveling it.) And you'll be able to use Stoneskin and Phalanx.
Stonestkin being a shield like spell that absorbs a certian percentage of damage from both Magic and Physical attacks. And with Protect + Shell + Phalanx on reducing damage, your stoneskin lasts a while.
Just remember, for the sake of soloing stuff, your mp may go down quite a bit. A some of 25+ mp for protect, a 15+ mp for shell, 40 for phalanx, and 29 for stoneskin. Not to mention the mp used for other spells such as Regen(15mp), Cure I-II-III(8-24-46mp), and blink(16mp?). You may end up with like 450-650 mp remaining depending on your main jobs level.
Not to mention, rdm subs do not provide alot of mp as well. But, you do get the Fast Cast trait that a rdm sub does provide. Which always cuts down on the cast time of your spells. (Blm's spend like 10 secs casting a Stone III, rdms can do it in 5-7secs) ^_^Altaeciana:75RDM/40BLM/71WHM/40SMN/37NIN/37DRK/40RNG/37WAR

higher levels, rdm sub starts to shine in parties where you have a brd, but no rdm. Having an additional dispel is always nice. In addition, there are certain times where gravity can be very, very handy (running through boyahda for ramuh/steelshells/processionaires/darters/spiders/fafnir, hey look, Aquarious is up...(death)(you can have it) ), but as a general rule of thumb, /WHM > /RDM > /SMN. All have their uses, however. I'm currently taking an exp break on my blm to get all 3 of those to 37 (only need 1 level for whm, but tons for rdm and smn). For The Horde!!

/smn is pretty much a terrible idea. It has it's uses (like going to kill really low HNM like Roc/Simurgh/Serket/Bune/Guivre), but honestly, blink/stoneskin and cures (not to mention the amount of gil you save by having sneak/invis) are too much to give up. That's why /RDM and /WHM are the two best subs. /RDM isn't very good as a sub until you get dispel, then it's about on par with /whm.For The Horde!!

phalanx is 33
stoneskin is 34
so lvl 68 blm is where it becomes a good alternative to whm, particularly when soloing.
Your best bet is to lvl rdm and whm to 37. Never hurts to have options, and will leave you w/ a well rounded mage no matter which mage job you take to 75 if thats your plan.
