Maybe it's not common sense (as it seems to be to me)

A little guy isn't as good of a fighter as a big guy (everything else being equal)

A dumb guy (or guy with low MP/INT) makes a bad caster.

This has been stated in 8 million ways by 20 million people. You can play anything you want.

Here's the bottom line.. I'm pretty good at making groups, in every MMORPG I've played, I've been known for it. And as a lvl 56 BLM, I would not invite a Galka or Elvaan WHM unless there were NO other WHM or RDM available anywhere, and I've already been waiting for over an hour for a group. Same for RDM.

I play an elvaan blm, but one of the members of our perma party is a galkan whm/blm.

And to be honest, does a damn good job. The galkan rse armor adds lots of mp as does the whm af armor.

As a bonus, he has a ton of hp and will never die in 1-2-3-4 or 5 hits, even crit hits.

In the end, any race can play any class. Around lvl 40-75, the differences become so small they don't matter.

Besides, if you're having to burn through all your mages MP for 1 fight or even 2 fights, then you're doing something wrong as a party, so mp isn't a big issue at higher lvl's.

Actually, the differences in MP and stats only become larger with levels, and gear has a harder time making up for it.

A taru can have the same +INT a Galka can have as a 75 BLM, or damn near.

Like I said, this has been argued a ton, but at NO POINT WILL YOU EVER be as good, or even NEAR as good, by choosing the worst class for a race. I PT fairly regularly with a Taru PLD.. He does a great job and tanks and keeps aggro great. But he also has a permanent Taru WHM partner. If he was tanking for a new mage, that isn't used to a Taru, he could die. So like everyone will say, anything CAN work. But if you are below-par in stats/abilities, you WILL have a harder time, and people WILL choose others over you.

I'm an optimist, but the question was whether they are "good" or not.

        No. Acceptable.. probably.. Good, No.

And if you say yes, IMO you're being facetious. "But a BLM/WAR COULD be good... think of all the hits you could take!" blah blah blah...

There are no race/job combinations I won't invite. There are players I won't invite... If you do your job good you should not have a problem... there are no crappy jobs... just crappy players.

hmmm... if your mage has to take 1-2-3-4-5 hits in a fight and needs all that extra hp, you are probably having some problem there yourself...

Anyways, I am in a static party with another Taru(WHM/BRD) and a Galka (PLD/WAR). Just a while back, we decided to switch role and do a "mock-party", where the Glka played WHM, and we Taru's melee'ed.

Even before we finished power leveling each other's chars to grouping levels, we saw some problems. The Galka WHM had less MP then the Taru PLD... and was dealing the most damage -_-;;. We realized that if we were to make that group work, we'd have to put in a lot of effort, a lot more then we did with our main jobs, to get through the lower levels, and after that, we'd be spending tons of time getting elite stat-boosting gears to compensate for our racial dis-advantages.

At that point, we pretty much decided to put that mock-party idea on hold, since all of us work full-time and can't put in that kind of hard work just to correct a bad racial/job choice.

It was sure a bundle of fun though... we will probably give it another try when our main is much higher in level and have access to more resources.

Its certainly possible to be good with any race as a mage, but a good galka mage player would be even better as a taru or mithra mage. Everyone loves to say how they can still be good despite the race, but you will have a disadvantage and could be better with the appropriate race. Better > good.

                  Skill is the thing.

I'm new to this particular game, but I would'nt imagine that's its different then any of the MMORPGS that I've played. I'd rather play with a skilled partner that has an inadequate character then with a partner who has no clue what he's doing with a perfect combo.

and I'd rather play with a skill player with a perfect combo then a skill player with a backwards character. no offense, but you seem to be mixing 2 different issues.

                    analogy:

A: a 5 dollar bill is more effective then a 1 dollar bill.

B: oh yeah? I'd rather have a 1 dollar bill in a solid gold box.

A: but $5 is still worth more then a $1 bill...

B: not if the $1 bill comes with a solid gold box.

                    A:....

This is the kind of logic many try to employ to argue for backwards race/job combos.

Player skills aside, the Glaka race makes poor mages due to the lack of MP and INT. Tarutaru, on the other hand, is meant to be mages.

Sure, you can make a Galka mage work out if you are skilled and hard working enough, but with the same skill and effort, you will be even more effective with a better race selection.

I play a Glaka BLM/Whm and pre 30 is hard because RSE is not availible and then from 30-40 it is nice the 96 mana and extra int it gives are great the problem is that Galka only seem to gain about 7 MP per lvl and the more you lvl the larger the gap gets.
no galka will ever have the natural MP of a Taru, Ever never ever!
                      that being said
A Galka mage can work there are plenty of High lvl JP galka mages out there the thing is and i will say it over and over it takes allot more gill. I haver a perma group that i play with
well perma 5 and my party can chain 3 or 4 IT before i get in a hurt for mana, granted i am only 48 now and don't know how it will be later. The Main thing is Having a Galka Mage the Party will probaly function a little diffrently then a "normal party", That does not mean it won't work great. People that say they will never invite a Galka or a Elvaan screw them. there are plenty of people to party with and i am in no rush to group with everybody on the server. I get plenty of offers to join parties.
I played end game Wizard in eq up till release day of FFXI, and i consider myself a decent player. so player skill can go a long way to make up for race short comings.
In the end play'n a Galka mage has been great fun and I have made more friends as a Mage then i did play'n a DRG up to 42
dealing with taru mages that never /heal and then cry when they get hit with 200 point AE. player skill and the person behind the keyboard will always make the avatar not the other way around.
Keeping up with good gear and spells
                      3 or 4 million gil
                      Being a Galka BLM PRICELESS

Yeah the Galka mage is not good. I'm not trying to be narrow-minded here, as I don't play a Taru either, but FFXI is not a difficult game at all, so survivability is not really the issue. Efficiency is. Efficiency is what becomes the standard for "good vs bad" in this game. Otherwise, why would parties want support classes? It's not that hard to survive without a main healer, if you're going to be satisfied with 6-person teaming easy prey and/or resting after every kill, but the exp gain will be crap, and 99% of the players will classify that as a bad party. Same goes for damage dealers...if no one else were around, a melee damage dealer could theoretically save money by equipping a weapon half his level and probably get away with it. Viable? Probably, but I'll bet everyone who noticed would call him an idiot.

The Galka mage definitely is bad, from a job and party's point of view, as you'll be giving yourself a disadvantage that really can't be compensated for. Taking player skill into account is just trying to dilute the point as Yuanlung said, as the two are unrelated. Spending millions of gil on equipment also does not prove a thing. The fact that so much gil is needed to catch up, already proves the disadvantage.

you can play anything you like but i can tell you this.

at 61 I as a Taru BLM/RDM have problems finding groups because the BLM/WHM get picked first and there are only about 2 groups of people in my level range durring my play time (and 3-4 BLM).

I can not imagine how hard it would be for a Galka BLM ^^

PS: my new WHM sub is 15 now ^^ not going to even bother try'n to level my BLM until i get my WHM to 35 now

Kinda surprised to hear that you're getting less invites as a BLM/RDM. I haven't noticed myself being passed over for a group yet (at 57). Most times I've heard people mention it's like "BLM/RDM, BLM/WHM, same thing". I suppose if you were playing debuffer/RDM role WHM sub would be important. But I just don't see it as an issue.

/back to your regularly scheduled Galka/Elvaan BLM thread.

There have been a couple times where I am at 300 MP and the WHM is at 100 MP and a seal + cureaga woulda let us get a chain 5 but instead we have to stop at 4.

overall a WHM is far far more useful as a sub than a RDM and groups know this.
