  • blm castining nonstop = dead

    Everyone is lvl20-21 in Qufim
    Party is DRK/WAR , WAR, RDM/WAR, DRG/Forgot, WHM, BLM/WHM

It's a good combo and we're able to take IT clippers without a problem. The problem is that the BLM casts his nuke nonstop and draws so much hate upon himself. The WAR continuosly provoke every 30 secs. The DRK/war and RDM/war provoke whenever the mages are aggro He blames the provokers for not able to contain the mob. I told him to control his damage output and that it is impossible for any party combo to control his nonstop casting. At end of every battle, he would have no mp left and whm always still have 50% mp left.

Tell me if i'm wrong , i never play a mage beyond lvl10 before but i am familiar with how mages work. BLM puts out the most damage in the game and thus draws the most hate. There was no way even if we had 5 WAR provoking would've stopped the aggro on him. His damage on the mob was huge while the WAR and the DRK dmg wasn't that much on these clippers. He says what good is a BLM if he can only cast 50% of the time during battle. Well he ended up deleveling 3 times in a very short time. Other pt members hp were never in danger b/c the whm was doing a fine job. Being a blm he only needed 2-3 hits and he's dead.

Well I told him to go check the msg forums to read more about using a BLM b/c he insisted he's right that he can cast nonstop and that his LS friends agree with him. Not sure who he asked, but they're all wrong, or am I?

You are right, they are wrong.

One of the jobs of the BLM (and any damage-dealer) is to contain their damage to match what the tanks can handle. Chaincasting BLM = dead BLM, every single time, as you saw firsthand.

Yeah this is one that took me a while to learn how to judge. Most blm's it seems to me don't learn this lesson until around 25-30. I was lucky I picked it up around 15 when I died far more times on that one lvl then most people will through the entire game.

Yeah, BLM have to be careful what we cast and how much we cast. Though in my exp. The whm. Will usually have more MP then your BLM just because they usually don't have to cure a whole lot. (<<<< Subject to change depending on what you are fighting, and how good your party is.)

One thing that I have learned to help myself out. On my hate, is I will wait for a while before I get off my TaruTaru ass. I will wait until the warriors have pissed the mob off enough that it seems that it will not be really worried about me.

Another thing, that goes into this is learning when to cast. This is not always the case, but it tends that right after your warrior casts provoke you have one spell for free. Basicly you can cast one spell and usually not get attacked. (Subject to be different depending on how strong the spell is etc...)

Now what I have learned help people learn this lesson. Might sound kind of Cruel, and will piss the person off. But tell them what they are doing wrong, and then once, they keep doing it. Let them die. Very Very soon they will realize how to fix this problem.

I am an excellent example of this I died over 50 times on lvl 15. (Don't ask me how. I just keep dieing. I hate that lvl.)

I deleveled so many times I can't even remember. But that taught me really fast how to control my hate (Not fast enough, but fast none the less.)

One other thing that I do to watch out for, to much hate in a battle, is I will Big spell link casting. Instead of going Water II Stone II. I will do maybe Water II then Fire.

But those are just a couple of my techniques.

Oh and above all, when you use any of the area effect spells. Watch out. That is a common way for Blm's to die. They will cast waterga. Hit the Mandragora they were aiming at but hit a goblin that they weren't also.

Problem is that they don't listen. I know a BLM is good when he has about the same MP has the WHM. I know a BLM is bad when he constantly chain cast spell. The Black Mage who do this are the reason why alot of PT take other damage dealer Jobs instead of inviting a BLM. Because they don't want the tank to sweat all the time since he has to stress about holding aggro. The fighters don't want to invite a BLM because they won't be able to Renkei since the mob will always be moving.

Here's something you can try that works fairly well...since i cant stand blm's who cast 1 nuke then wait 10 seconds doing nothing before casting again.

Cast enfeeblement....cast nuke...cast enfeeblement....cast nuke. The few seconds that you're using enfeeblement spells is enough time for the wars to jack up there aggro on it.

And when the party is about to renkei, just chill for a few seconds while they're doing it and get your MB ready.

I LOVE chain casting. I'm lvl 35 fighting in Garlaige citadel, around 520hp and i will die in 5-6 hits. And when some bats hit twice in a row in hurts. The more you cast, the quicker the fight and the less mp your whm will have to use to heal the tanks. Overdo it, and it's 5 min downtime while you rez.

I thought that if you consecutivley used an attack spell then an enfeeblement sepell (i.e. Poison, Blind, ect.) then your hate would be ok? I am still really weak, but my brother told me that so I didn't know if that would work....Mabey that could help the hate? I'm not exactly sure though....

Maybe its the Everquest days coming out in me, but I've never had a problem with too much hate when playing my blackmage. I went through 7 levels with only one death this week, and that was due to a link, not overhate.

I agree with putting smaller spells in between nukes to space out hate. Do something like: blind, shock, fire, cure, fire, cure, fire, etc. You're still getting your damage in but doing other things to help the party such as enfeebling spells and spot-cures. The blackmage that does Blizzard, Fire, Aero, Blizzard, Fire, Aero is the blackmage begging to get killed.

what you have to do is learn the flow of hate from 1 or 2 battles and then get your own flow going. I am able to know exactly how much hate every one of my spells generate and how much it will take to get it off, so i never get hit unless i realy want to, and i'm always casting nonstop. Some people are scared that i do this, but then they realize that i never get hit.

well from Experience this isn't entirely true and sorry I did not read all the postits yet but this is what I do.

Damage Spell >> (For ex.) Poison >> Damage Spell >> Dia >> Damage Spell >> Paralyze >> Damage spell >> etc etc...

basically I just use spells like Water II Then Dia then Stone II then Paralyze. It gives the hate a break + hurting the enemy. If u catch what I mean this can really help in a battle situation.

                    I hate to barge in here... but you shouldn't be using Stone or Water II except for magic bursts or if the mob is weak to it... It helps control hate and conserve MP if you just cast to it's weakness.. if the mob doesn't have a weakness then just use your top spells and pray ><;

Like taga said you have to aim for a weakness and not just cast your top spells. just be sure not to chain them like fire->aero->water->fire and so on and so forth. do something like Silvermatrix mentioned and cast elemental and then enfeeble...and for the love of god NEVER EVER EVER EVER EVER use your 2 hour unless it is at the begging of fight of something like a aggroed mob attacking while you heal

i'd have to agree with warning them once, twice, letting them die, i have a huge pet peeve of heal me hotkeys, and after i told the next time i would let them die they didn't use them. while the blm may not die the message willg et across.

also i rarely heal mages in my group unless it was during agro and not from overnuking, liek goblin bomb when the baddie has 10% health left, your mage is gonna /heal anyway so not gonna burn my mps healing him at that stage

I personally, have a more feel and know it way of casting. I will chain when I feel like it but at the same time I will also watch for certain things. Ie. provoke someone else doing something that will give them so much hate they can't take it.

I have to say, if i ever see my whm getting attacked I am an instant. Chainer. I will cast my highest hate spells to get that mob off them.

Hardly ever heal mages isn't always a good thing. Sometimes you can't help but get hate. Some of your spells are going to get you hate.

You go Water II, That is usually a hate getter, And when first going to an area you have to try most of your spells out to see which one's will hit hardest.

Though I have learned when in doubt keep your but on the groud until you see your War's with a bit of damage done.

Oh and as for breaks between spells, I have to be honest, I am more likely to take a break then cast Choke etc. Because my enfeeblments are the first things I cast in any fight. So the mob already has if's debuffs.

So by casting it again I am doing nothing but wasting MP.

That is why I don't group with black mages I don't know. A poor black mage who just overagros isn't a contribution, they are a liability. Sadly I know all of 3 black mages who don't play terribly. =/

You would think black mages by the time they get in their 40's would figure it out that when they get agro, it is usually their fault (there are of course shitty tanks, but chaining Aero 2 Stone 2 etc is asking to die).
