  • confusion on effects of charisma

ok im coming up on bst soon and was wondering about the effects of charisma since i have many different things.

like if your gonna go charisma go all out or none at all. like if you equip a moderate amount of charisma gear, you get worse tame rates/duration rates than when you had no charisma equipped, but that doesnt make sense to me.

so it boils down to whether i should be looking at getting some gil for the best charisma gear i can buy, or get none at all and focus on attack. an aswer from someone like stephen(my idol ^^) would be appreciated.....

Well, im not Stephen, unfortunatly, but i'll tell you what i know from my experience.

Duration of charm = Effected by 3 things, your level, the mobs level, and your AF armor(has +Charm on it).

Success of charm = Effected by your Charisma and the mobs level vs your Level(I also heard a rumor that the lower the mobs HP the easier it is to charm)

Do both. Macro your CHR+ gear before you charm.
Switch to your DEX and attack gear when you attack a monster.

        Bloody expensive.

Did it. So freaking expensive. Read these boards before PS2 release, so I knew what to save up for. I probably didn't play my WHM to it's full potential due to lack of upgrading gear and and never buying drinks. But dozens of moat carp stacks, Gourmet quests and mitkabob cooking later, I had my Signa at 17. :D

Worth every penny along with other CHR gear I bought.

You don't need a signa till the 60's. Hell, due to TP issues I still don't usea signa all the time. Once you start getting to that range mischarms start getting more and more frequent...

The running rumor now btw is that light staff has a hidden effect of increasing charm success. I ended up with a small fortune after some luck in ifrit's so I managed to purchase both a signa and white staff recently (though frankly i don't use them enough to really make it worthwhile), but for now it's hard to notice the difference; worse yet, I'm afraid to do any more testing after a EM boyahda mandra (they have a little bit of charm resist, but still...) nearly swiped me during charm testing.

noble ribbon, bird whistle and maybe 2 hope rings (or the NQ version) should get you by for quite a while... Add a corset (NQ or HQ) to that and the AF axe and you're already up to +15 or so...

...which reminds me that I still have to get the damned HQ Corset.

Well crap lol. I got the CHR rings, the bird whistle and noble's ribbon now. I do lose TP. But at 28, I still have trouble fighting along side my pet in the tunnel, so I figured, "meh".

              Any suggestions

I've been leveling up BST and it's a great change of pace. I also have Noble's Ribbon, Bird Whistle, CHR+ rings, et cetera. I was PTing with another BST yesterday who couldn't help but have a macro that went something like:
                /equip main "Monster Signa"
/p NOW EQUIPPING +18 CHR GEAR
                -.-
However, regardless of his having 8 more CHR than me in items, he seemed to fail to charm about as often as me. I don't know the difference between Taru CHR and Hume CHR, but I doubt Taru is that much more than Hume. So my thought is that at this early stage, Monster Signa is a little overkill and does very little to help charming.

As someone else said, if you're going to be fighting, you should buy DEX+ gear. And if you're going to tank, VIT+ is worthwhile too.

I find that to this point (lvl21, so it no doubt changes in the future), I can hit pretty well without DEX gear, but CHR+ gear makes tanking impossible (lose hate very quickly), so I think I'll invest in VIT+ gear for that situation (keep in mind Taru have the worst VIT, so I have to make up for that where another race might not).

"Expense" is relative. I've got all the best gear short of a Monster Signa and it was probably 50K, max. That's as much as one of my RDM rings, and they aren't even HQ.
                There will be cake.

Heh that guy is a prick.

And Hume CHR = Taru CHR. No base difference.

It's odd, but despite what chr my friends and I have, we all usually fail a charm at the same time. Seriously. If they fail a charm on a mob, I'll try and charm it to save them the wait of the timer. Sometimes I'll fail on that mob too. Or it could be independant. I fail on my mob, and they fail on theirs. O_o

Does the CHR bonus take effect immediately after switching the equipment on?

On Darksday (in my experience and 3 other BST i was partied with!) Charm was Resisted A crap load. So beware.

Insects seem to resist the most for me. Grubs expsecially(sp).

Bats, leechs, lizards never seem to be a problem. But every crawler or grub gives me trouble.

It's general consensus that charming stuff gets trickier after 60, but before that you can sort of get by with any amount of +chr (10-15).

I think things are generally harder to charm overall, but the advantage of being in bst parties now is that it's okay to use DC pets against IT or VT stuff, because there's usually 2-4 pets. As long as they're not all easy prey, their strength doesn't matter so much, because of their numbers. So yeah it's nice not having to wear full +chr gear to charm even matches consistently.

Realise this though, you're going to fail sometime. ;x A couple of my friends use Opo Opo crown and pamamas plus signa, etc, and still get the odd fail.
