Penta is what a DRG is supposed to do between skillchains, assuming they can reliably land 4-5 hits AND keep up with the other melees tp. If you can't do both, it shouldn't be used, simple as that.

One thing I don't get is why I never hear about Double Thrust at higher levels. DT has more SC's available. And with 2 hits, I get back 24 TP. With Double Thrust thew others never have a problem waiting for me to get TP. Heck, with +acc/dex equipment I can usually get 200 by time the others get 100. Partner me up with a THF and we can do 1000+ dmg together. Plus there's the MB. Latter on DT can renki with Dancing Edge, Sidewinder, ect. Does DT dmg suck latter on? Still used it until got Skewer as needed in Skillchains. Skewer does the same renkeis Double Thrust does, and a lot more actually. Skewer can renkei with Dancing Edge, make Gravitation (weak finisher tho), also can finish impaction (again, weak finisher) as well as Fusion just off the top of my head. Not ideal to use as a finisher as there are almost always better damage finishers, but its ok damage, more than Double Thrust for sure. Mostly just used it in the Skewer -> Dancing Edge levels.
I mean just because you get Penta doesn't mean skillchains aren't worth doing suddenly, far from it.

DRG really slows down after 60 cause of the overhype that is guillotine but hey, pentathrust got overhyped at 49 and it sucks. But from what my PLD friend says he fights bones alot 67+ and the -50% damage for spears is WAY too harsh and dragoons will never be accepted into those groups

That's exactly the biggest problem with dragoon.It's not the weapon skill which really hurt the dragoon or the lack of equipement compared to a knight or ranger or warrior.Lance deal a lot of damage and your wyvern is a much needed bonus.
However,no matter how much Square boost up dragoon attack power or whatever if spear get's a 50% reduction in damage versus bone they will always suck ><
50% is absolutely huge.It mean everyone will outdamage you if you fight bone past 67.Even with a static party you will slow down your party(maybe your friends don't mind crap exp per hour).There's no way a dragoon should level up on bone.Find another hunting spot,fight anything but bone.

Its a common misconception all there is to fight is bones post 65. Its completely untrue to say the least. My 60-70 road has been Raptors/perytons, coeurls, cockatrice, processionaires, steelshells, tormentors, darters and bark tarantulas. I figure I can do bark tarantulas to 71 reliably, kuftal tigers and cockatrices to I guess 73. After that probably Ro'Maeve, or hopefully have Tu'lia access whenever and be able to exp in there.
The fact is for the most part, unless you are a monk, everyones damage suffers vs bones. There are alternatives. Regardless, still sucks being the only job so severely penalized vs a prolific monster type when other jobs don't carry near the same penalty fighting the things I listed above really. The only thing a monk would be less than superb at is steelshells, and skimmers are a fine alternative at that level (hell the only reason I didn't exp off skimmers is people afraid of links ><).
I still suggest other jobs if you want to feel "uber".
Oh wanted to add, yes, poor itemization and weak damage weapon skills is whats wrong with dragoons. The no bones thing is workable and annoying at best.

The only reason people really like lvling on bones is because they have very low HP and the basic renkei and MB brings it down to like 10%HP or kills it. I lved on them with my THF in Eldime Combo > Red Lotus > Sneak+Trick+Combo and a MB basically destroys them. At that lv with my THF i was hitting like 25-35 a hit where the mnk was hitting 45-60 a hit but i can see how people like lvling off them..got about 5k+ an hour and at lv34 thats pretty dam good..
