I saw a lvl 75 war/rdm running around the other day. I thought that would be an interesting tank being able to use phalanx and other handy spells. Too bad he's already reached the limit :sweat:
36 War/15 Mnk/22 Thf/62 Pld/Bst 75/Nin 33/Whm 36/Blm 19/Cor 7
Full Af X2 • Rank 8 • Alchemy 65
Blink 1 & 2 loose some effectiveness when nin is sub (they absorb 1 less hit each than if nin is main job) while that may not seem a lot (it does make quite a difference so far that I've seen) nin also overall has better evade, and parry than a warrior. And that does make a big difference.
PLD all the way. I've partied with a good NIN tank, and it was nice in that I hardly ever had to cure him... but I've also partied with some bad NIN tanks, and they can be really horrid. The PLD might take a little more damage, but, well, that's why I'm there. And don't even try to compare WAR tanks to PLD tanks, at least not at the levels I've played so far. Maybe it's just the difference in dedication--most PLD's are PLD's because they WANT to tank--but I've never had a WAR tank that can stand up to even an average PLD, much less an exceptional one.
When I'm playing my main job (WHM), I find myself becoming more and more reluctant to accept an invite from any party that doesn't have a PLD. There is no substitute.
I LOVE having a WAR/NIN support tank in a pt WITH a nin or pld. Works soooo nicely (being a thief, ninja is just as good) T
The WAR has to be good however, 99.99997% of the 50+ wars on Odin are Japanese on Odin anyway so thats not a problem. But yesterday my party was PLD/WAR/THF/MNK/BRD/RDM I could absolutely not pull fast enough we were the ONLY party in boyahda(mid day) and there was still not enough spawns, our only downtime was a lunch/breakfast break the group agreed upon. The War took 0-100 dmg starting the battle and outdamaged most darkknights, samurai and dragoon I pt with.
(sniper rings+scorpion harness surely helped)
This will sound very strange since I'm a Ninja myself, but if I'm not a Ninja and in a party, I tend to hope that the tank is a Pld. ;;
Why? Because its plainly simple, the track record of bad Paladins to bad Ninja's is pretty wide. I've met some very...very bad Paladins but they tend to do ok at they're job as there's not nearly as much to do as Ninja/Warrior needs to do, so theres less to screw up on. Inviting a Ninja into the party is like the ultimate uncertainty for me, because I don't know if the Ninja will be good or horrifically bad. Ninja's such an easy job to screw up on..
Personally it goes like this.
1) Ninja who's good and skillful, uses all Ninjutsu
1) (tied) Paladin, pretty hard to go wrong
2)Warrior, although at this point a Warrior tanking is kind of strange to me. I know they tank very well still, but they've kind of become damage dealers more lately who just happen to tank better than all other "damage dealers"
3) Bad Ninja's. ><
