Why does everyone hate Elvaans?

I really wanted to be an Elvaan, but all I hear is every other race putting them down. They can't hit anything or dodge, everyone makes fun of their looks and battle stances (seriously, what's wrong with them?). What I wonder is, why do other races/people who make fun of Elvaans but never point out their own flaws? And are Elvaans really worth the time, or should I just go with a Hume?

don't worry so much what people are saying. if you want to be a race, be that race. I prefer tarus, so i play as one. Elvaans have good stats, and even if they don't, it has been pointed out excessively that any race really can do any job, it just may take some equipment modification, worse case scenario. So, just do whatever it is you desire to do, and don't worry so much what others are saying.

I love the elvaan battle stances, particullarly 1handed and 2handed sword the best, if it wernt for those damn ears I'd of been an elvaan...

Mmm... I know that some of the people I know hate elvaans not because of the players themselves, but because of the NPC's. I dunno how they treat fellow NPC's, but if you've ever gone to SD as someone from another nation, they come off as arrogant and rather evil to non-San D'orians. (Yes, I know this has nothing to do with the players themselves, but just thought I'd toss in another possible explanation)

Not saying you can't make an elvaan work, but their main problems are low DEX and low accuracy. This makes them miss a lot, which sucks, considering most elvaans play a melee job.

In FFXI, i find it is quite harder to make up for lost dex and accuracy than it is to make up for low STR or attack. (cheaper too)

however, if you take enough time you can get all the items you need to match or surpass the other players you compete with.

I don't like elfs for a lot of reasons:

They are stuck up and always call me "Outsider" when I rent a mog house.

They are always kicking Bastok's and Windhurst's ass in Conquest.

WHM elfs make me heal more then the WHM elf does.

They look stuck up.

Now out of all those reasons, are they really valid? Naaa...
Play what you like, no one is going to not pt with you b/c your an elf. Just don't be a Mage elf

not EVERYONE hates Elvaans, it's just a lot of people play them wrong so a bad word kind of gets around

Play an elvaan, always make sure to have +DEX items equipped, don't be an ass... and you'll have an awesome time.

I'm playing an elvaan no matter what n e one says, I'm just not going to be a jerk about it. Always keep your accuracy up.


(BTW Elvaan's stances look AWESOME, especially with Great Katana)

First of all, what elvaans really look wierd with is one handed swords=P They have *the males anyway* a special gkatana stance so thats neat.

The thing is, everyones seemingly a damn elvaan, so the anti elvaan posts are really non elvaans just takeing a jab at them, they are so numerous they must be popular, and popular things get made fun of=P (they run funny and have long necks!! )

The cant hit anything posts are just full of it. It really doesnt make that much of a differance. And it depends far more on your class and its ability with X weapon and equipment than base stats as to how well you hit. Yes i am sure that someones friends moms aunts mithra thf once grouped with an elvaan who missed 50 times in a row... that doesnt mean anything. (other than elvaan cant hit the broad side of a barn and swing like sissys!!.. ofcorse )

Elvaan are good for almost all melee, and while mithra are a tad better on the lighter side of melee, elvaan are a little better on the heavyer side of melee.

I have a Hume character and a Elvaan character I really don't see that MUCH of a difference when Elvaans miss. Ever since people said "Elvaans miss a lot" everyone says it now. It depends how well your weapon is capped the better it is the less you miss. All Races miss every race needs something boosted up in melee. Elvaans are cool I had a lvl 30 war Elvaan named Setoshi and I decied to take a break from elvaan and try hume for a while and I there is still some times Humes miss a lot that have gotten me killed. :mad: As how they look, somtimes it borthers me how they run... but meh I got used to it. Elvaans have great stances as for holding a 1 handed weapon they are holding it properly.... like fencing! They hold 2 haned weapons real cool and they even look cool riding a chocobo (One handed). I regert playing as a hume so I am going to start over as a Elvaan just too good of a race. People always hate on the best.

^^What Rico said. "People hate the best." The people that are making fun of elvaan are just pissed becasue they choose an inferior race when it comes to melee jobs. People say elvaan miss a lot and that is bullshit. At lvl 75DRK/37WAR, elvaan have 67 dex with no equipment at all, while hume, taru, and galka have 70. They have a 1.5 natural accuracy advantage over elvaan, which means jack shit. Elvaan have very graceful movements and swing with a lot of power, at least with the two handed weapons. When mithra and hume swing the great sword and scythe, it looks like they cant even hold the damn things and then when they swing it looks so weak and pathetic. As for the looks, you will not be dissapointed when you wear the heavy, higher lvl armors if you are elvaan either. Elvaan are just too damn sexy and they just look badass.

I'm just sick of Elvaan because I'm tired of seeing 60% of the mages on my server be Elvaan. I'm not one to egg on others' personal choices, but it gets old after awhile. Afterall, if everyone else is going to go with subpar race/jobs why bother wasting money on going with better equipment? We can just all be mediocre. Once again, I don't have a problem with others doing what they want, but it begins to get frustrating when the majority of the mages turn out to be Elvaan with their garbage mp pools.

Remember, that comes from an Elvaan. Who just happens to be the best.


I don't really care what job/race combo you play, but if you suck at it, I'll tell you. I've had Galkan mages better than Taru mages. Its the person sitting at thet keyboard that makes or breaks the character. I choose Hume because its the easiest for me to RP, and I liked one of the character models.

Elvaan may be fugly or sexy depending on your perspective, but the whole low accuracy and dexterity is pretty much a huge exaggeration propagated by wanna-bes on the forums. All races have nearly the same dexterity, except for mithra, and there's a fair number of ppl who have mentioned the "imbalance" of mithras. Play the game long enough, and it is apparent that accuracy is based 95% on your level compared to monster (ie, skillcaps), whether there is a bard, and your equipment, and monster using crap like evasion boost moves. I have played taru melee and elvaan melee, and the dexterity made a big fat 0 difference that i could tell. Basically, there will never be a situation where the hume or galka can hit the monster and the elvaan is a whiffing machine. Either everyone is missing a lot, or someone's equipment is better/worse.
