Is there some sort of science to camping NM?

I've seen the macros ppl use to target NM's, namely:

/targetnpc
/ja "Provoke" (or whatever else)

but this seems kinda inefficient to me. won't you target and provoke the other rabble around the area? which in turn will slow you down when the NM pops because you have to deal with the mob that you just ticked off?

I mean what do you guys do to avoid getting the other junk mobs in the area? Or do you just grab those too and deal with the chance you'll miss the NM?

/targetnpc for small areas, or when the pop is very likely to be right in front of me.

/ma Flash <stnpc> while in a wide area, and other junk stuff in the way.
