  • BCNM 30 Strategy (Success)

Hello. I just completed BCNM30 at Horlais Peak with a victory for our first try. Here is some concrete information for all of you to mull over.

Horlais Peak BCNM 30 pits you against 2 Beetles, one is typical green beetle that you see everywhere, the other has a dark grey or black pattern as opposed to green.

Bisan: Green Beetle. Endless TP. Constantly using Spoil, Rhino Charge, and Rhino Guard. This is your warrior type.

Pilwiz: Black Beetle. Spams nearly instant cast Stonega II. Extremely painful.

Our party going into the BCNM, RDM/WAR, DRK/WAR, RNG/WAR. Our strategy going into BCNM: Do as much damage within 30 seconds as possible. The DRK was wielding a knife as we entered, and the ranger a crossbow loaded with sleep bolts. Each of us had hi-potions, I had two melon juices, and had eaten a witch kabob, they had both eaten mithkabobs.

We began the fight by picking Pilwiz, and the DRK ran forward and used Souleater and Blood Weapon (The two negate each other for 0 hp loss, but full damage bonus.) The RNG then unloaded eagle eye shot, and barrage (with his longbow, not crossbow.) Within 30 seconds Pilwiz was dead, having received received 1503 damage, 753 from the DRK, 750 from the RNG. In the scant 30 seconds that Pilwiz was alive, he cast Stonega II twice doing around 300-400 damage to each of us. (The arena has a bottleneck which prevented us from spreading well.) Because of this, I as the RDM was unable to unload chainspell blizzard which was meant to do another 700 damage to Pilwiz, fortunately this wasn't necessary. My chainspell went instead to casting cure II about 15 times to get us all fixed up. If we hadn't killed Pilwiz so fast it is unlikely we would've had any chance at all.

Bisan lasted another 10 minutes. The RNG kept plunking away with sleep bolts (about 1 in 5 slept the beetle for 5-7 seconds), and the DRK would voke while the beetle was asleep to maintain hate. I rested, and chugged on juices, and kept us healed. The DRK continued kiting, tossing drains and aspirs, while the RNG did a constant stream of damage with sleep bolts, allowing us to then run to the other side of the arena and rebegin the kite. Bisan made it much easier for us to kite him by his constant use of Rhino Guard making him stand still. Eventually we wore him down, and claimed victory doing 1639 damage.

Reward was a beetle shell, a chestnut log, magic finale, and a pick belt. (And 1000 gil each.) Time was 10:32. Record was 5:31 or something.

    Quick Stats:
Pilwiz - Black Beetle - Mage - We estimate ~1400-1450 hps. (He was overkilled by the barrage.) Spams extremely fast cast Stonega II which does about 200 damage to each person.

Bisan - Green Beetle - Warrior - We estimate 1600 hps. Spams TP maneuvers, think permanent meditation.

What we'll do next time: Bring more melon juice, bring more hi-potions, I will be staying farther back at the start to avoid being stonega IIed myself, and possibly subbing summoner.

Finally, while we are all below 35, we did find out that you can cast buffs before entering the circle, and have them stick through the beetle fight. While this made little difference for us, it may make a huge difference to those with access to exceptionally powerful shell and protect spells. Furthermore while a beetle is sleeping you can voke it to move hate, bind it, gravity it, and aspir it, anything that doesn't change the HP amount of the beetle seems to be fine.

Kudos. (First post here from me, sorry if it is too long.)

    Number 2!

We went after this again, same party configuration and strategy, but this time attacked more aggressively. Broke the standing record of 5:35 by 1:20 and brought it down to 4:11.

We were able to refine our parsed numbers. Pilwiz has at most 1514 hp, and Bisan has at most 1504. So we think they both have 1500.

We got another pick belt, a cestus belt, magic finale, and a beetle shell. Kudos. We also got a recording of it.

Just for the record, Blood weapon does heal a bit more then Souleater takes away, with a Mrc. Cpt. Kukri and full health, I was doing about 70 damage per swing, 10-20 of which was from the dagger itself, so I was healing myself at the same time.
