RNG as tank?!

Ok, so I'm planning to do BCNM40 (onions) in a day or two with some friends, but the person setting it up is getting the following party:

RNG, BLM, BLM, WHM, RDM, BRD (me)

I don't see we'll have much of a problem in dealing damage but can we reasonably expect the ranger to tank?

Discounting Flood (for which I assume we'll sucessfully sleep or run out of range for) I've no idea how many hit points or DEF a level 40 ranger will have, and if it's unreasonable for the healers to keep him going.

Everything I'd read before seems to suggest that if you aren't using a PLD as a tank, MNK is the best (only?) alternitive.

Nobody mentioned NIN as tank rather than PLD? worked well for us... More damage and the Ninjitsu works wonders

personally i woulda prefered the blm be replaced with rdm but it worked just as well

RNG shadowbind the Black mandra as NINJA draws hate and allows the hord of white mandras to chase him

EVERYONE else stands BEHIND the bard untill they are slept... a few of our early runs everyone went to position early and we had some problems with the mandra's randomly attacking either me or the blm

Ok there all slept... whm stays to heal brd, and stays out of sleep range, blm remains farther up the path to concentrate on healing the melee, and ES + Silence the black mandra.

When my 2-hr was available I'd use Hundred Fists on the black mandra to make it die faster... we did about 10 runs back to back so it wasn't always there.

Black mandra dies... i'm saving tp.. I run to the hord of sleeping mandra's and Backhand Blow + Provoke one and run it back to where the melee are standing, the BRD draws a LARGE amount of hate so sometimes i need the rng's help to get them off the BRD

After that just work em down 1 by 1... If you defeat the black mandra and the BRD's still alive for our pt it was just a matter of maintaining enuff MP for cures.

The NIN was Blink tanking the whole time, but me and the rng often times found ourselves getting hate... No biggie as they don't hurt badly.

Oh, and out of all the runs we did flood wasn't casted once...

We didn't use any poison potions.. Everyone was eating but that's a necesity.

Won 6 Lost 2... and the 2 we lost where early... trying to coordinate the pt, and several, including me, had never been apart of a bcnm

Pardon my inexperience, but I had a brain-fart that may or may not work depending on how exactly the BCNM arena is setup (and/or how the AI is setup). Everyone agrees that a BRD is required to foe lullabye the normal onions, but would it be possible for a /SMN to carbuncle pull either a normal onion one at a time or pull the black one out?

If this isn't possible just slap me upside the head and tell me "yeah, we already thought of that, but it just won't work NOOB" :D But if it is possible, then BRD shouldn't become a necessity anymore, just a luxary and back-up "Oh shit" container.
