A couple days ago, my FFXI started running like crap. Its really laggy/choppy, and the music sometimes goes into a 'broken record' effect (almost like a skipping cd). Anyone know what would cause that, and how I could fix it? Its really irritating...

If it's a new problem, then chances are it's something you've installed recently (software or hardware), or a new driver that you've updated.

What have you changed recently?

Or other programs running on background, i personally know of Skype, Limewire(P2P) and bittorent to lag FFXI. MSN doesnt though
Also, my FFXI started to become laggy and crappy a while ago, turned out my grahics card was outdated. It could be that you never noticed any problems before on your outdated graphicscard, because you didnt play graphic-intensive games?

I myself have disabled Sound, in FFXI Config, for a couple of reasons:
- Disabling Sound makes FFXI run a lot smoother, (if it runs laggy in first place)
- off-topic kind of, I listen to music on the same PC pretty often, and I hate it when the annoying <call> messages go very loud through my music, even though in-game, i had sound volume to minimum. you can't turn down/off <call> effects, unless you disable all FFXI sound in FFXIConfig ><

It didnt start to be laggy until I installed the newest update, but its not just the game, its my whole computer now. I just ran spybot, ad-aware, and my antivirus program all on safemode, but its still doing it.

Try updating Direct X and your graphics card drivers... odds are your RAM or video card have just taken the proverbial shit though... try installing those on a friends PC and see if you get the same results...

Actually if it happened right after an update, I suspect file fragmentation.

Defragment your hard drive.

Start > Program Files > Accessories > System Tools > Disk Defragmenter. Check the status of the drive that FFXI is installed on - if it is very close to full, or the report comes back with a recommendation to defragment your drive, then do so (might take a while).

uh type direct-X in google and find the webpage? or go to microsoft.com and go to the Downloads section and type it in the search there

That's really odd. Are you sure nothing else has been installed recently?

- Maybe Windows Firewall turned itself on for some reason? This is a common complaint when experiencing slower performance on a Windows XP PC.

- Maybe your main hard drive is close to full, which is restricting your pagefile size and causing havoc with Windows?

- Did you check to see if you have any P2P services as outlined above (Limewire, BitTorrent clients, etc.)?

If it's your whole computer, it's not related to FFXI specifically, and the recent update isn't your root cause since FFXI doesn't affect anything outside when it isn't actually running.

I had this problem before once, and it was because I DLed a beta driver from a website for over clocking and it wasn't compatible... try rolling back your video card driver if you updated it recently

Yeah I just noticed it was on for some reason, but when I turn it off, it says I have no firewall on, and I know this wasn't the case before it started lagging.
