I am not running IE but I am running firefox. Browser is closed, but will get a few spyware and anti-virus checkers. I like Spybot and usually run Norton's AV any recommendations on other ones to look into?

I also use Xoftspy, which is a really good program. Picks up some stuff Spybot doesn't catch.

easiest thing to do is to look at your running processes in your task manager whenever you get kicked to desktop.

Well McAfee I know is compatible with FFXI, it uses a non-evasive window seems to be direct drawing it allowing FFXI to maintain priority. Don't know about AIM, MSN Messenger, or ICQ. I got rid of those when they became irritating and was bogging my system more then helping it.

Instead I go with X-Fire and it works perfectly with FFXI. It also direct draws using about a 40% opacity so you can actually call up X-Fire in the game to message a friend. It's a simple two key command set that FFXI conveniently doesn't use at all to call up the message window of the friend attempting to chat with you.

So if you do one of those other messengers I haven't tested them so don't know how they'd work. They are potential targets because I doubt they've been built to work with non-windowed programs. Then of course like everyone stated pop-ups can do it. Another thing you might want to check is some drivers.

An example of such is some printer drivers default with a "polling" option as active. If the printer wasn't setup right with it that "polling" option can interferre with many aspects of your system and even reduce performance speed in general. Aside from that probably want to get something that'll clean out unused drivers and registry entries that also has a possibility to cure your issue.

okay can grab MacAfee from my ISP (Comcast) and will look into Xoftspy for any spyware.

I would think with a clean install only a couple weeks ago and only having added the abode stuff (which I uninstalled) there shouldn't be a problem, could be my printer drivers, seems its always asking me to align it even though its already aligned.

I use tweak UI and set it keep programs and processes from stealing foces untill I click on them. Don't know for sure but it might help.

Oh with X-fire, my fiance has it and has had trouble finding the combination to use it with FFXI, any insight to help him out?

I know several folks who use it so it would be helpful to me as well.

Well the new Web-Based McAfee actually comes with a ton of features. It's got a decent Registry Cleaner coupled with a Shredder function (For the files you absolutly want to get rid of). Lets you choose how many times you want it go over that section to remove it. On top of that it comes with a built in Web Security, were it's system runs routine checks on websites to see if they are heavy pop-up fest or a potential malware on the site and warns you with a Red, Green, Grey scale.

The only thing I'm sure that might get annoying to some people is that McAfee is a bit overly protective. It requests permission from you every time a program goes to change an exe file, goes to change the registry, attempt to access the network/internet. Of course only have to confirm it once unless it's a program like EQ that does a check on it's files and removes McAfee's marker to ok it for internet access. EQ have to ok it for internet use every time, a little annoyance but it's just a small extra step.

Lol, got so few friends that message me that usually I only know the command when they message me and it pop a little message in the lower left telling me what keys to hit to call up that window. Give me some time and I can find the command list again.

okay here is the msconfig shot I said I would get, I did notice something (home from work -not feeling well) that there is a little thing that is popping up at the same interval as when I am getting booted.

gonna try to click on it and see what it is. Hopefully will help me figure out what is causing my issue.

I installed Tweak UI and set it as was mentioned earlier in the thread, but this seems to be ignoring that.

well if it's one of those possibly doing it then my money would be on either avgcc or NeroCheck.

Most of the rest just looks like OS stuff or basic drivers. Looks like it's a HP Pavilion brand or something....

Recent AVG's popup a lot, as in ever time it does something which is at least once a day, but the window stays open for at least 30s which lets you know exactly what stole focus. AFAIK, nerocheck has no gui to steal focus, its job is to monitor your system for drivers that may cause problems with Nero's software. When a log is generated by Nero, nerocheck dumps its output to that log.

It wouldn't surprise me if it was one of the HP related processes.

Well Thanks to all who were helping me, I finally figured out the problem, my windows firewall was not on and once that was set up and the exceptions for POL and FFXI were added everything worked fine. I was on for a few hours last night without issue.
