Re: Do you plan on buying the next expansion chapter?

What will be funny is hearing the answers of those individuals, having endured the first two expansionettes and know full well what the third will offer.

I wish I had my own little marketing team, so I too could spot those people whose actions seem to scream "milk me for every cent I have!"

I'll feel bad missing Shantotto if that expansion isn't any better. I love that character somehow. Maybe somebody will post the cutscenes on youtube or something.

I wonder if SE intends to dovetail these expansions at all.

For those that don't know what that means, it's bringing the stories together. Like in The Simpsons (or any number of other shows), you would frequently have multiple stories per show, which would find themselves interacting in some way to resolve the plot (the easiest example to think of being the one where Homer tries to push Springy as an Olympic mascot; and flushes them down the toilet after his ultimate failure... leading to a bunch of springs in a bay to bounce on when the ship that Bart and Lisa are on begins to sink). Arrested Development has some of the best examples of dovetailing that mankind has ever invented.

Would be an interesting way to try to redeem them.

Although honestly I hope SE COPs this; go back, and rework the content significantly. Maybe even more than COP, maybe you need to just remove some stuff entirely.

Incidentally, I don't think the coffers will be a problem, you can pop them anytime for key items or AF...

Re: Do you plan on buying the next expansion chapter?

Come to think about it, I think they do dovetail RotZ and CoP, after all, Feba. Though, I don't see any signs of dovetailing at all, really - each can be purchased independently of the other, and they don't seem to have any common threads expect for the fact that Shantotto did make an incredibly brief appearance during the opening cutscene for ACP.

Though, honestly. There's going to have to be at least one person out there that gets all three (a completionist?) if for nothing else than to inform the rest of us of how bad they are. Even if there is some epic-dovetailing-completion-thread that reveals itself at the end of all three add-ons at the Tenshodo Chest, some final story that would be worth paying the price of a full expansion for, it will be the trailblazers that let the skeptics know.

If I can be completely blunt, though, I severely doubt any of that is going to happen. Ever. Even though S-E, in theory, could do so at any time. Although in practice, it would require them making something add-on related that isn't a hurdle of RMT'd junk to jump over in order to get a piece of new, respectable RDM front-lining equipment, on a magey model.

Yes, which is what gave me the idea of doing it again.

If I'm a Shantotto fan, but I only want to suffer one crappy expansionette, which am I going with? if I think moogles are the cutest? If the really good content requires all of them, it makes the filler material less insufferable for most, and provides incentive to buy. For everyone pissed at this who bought it, even if the third expansion is more of the same, if they have a brilliant shared ending, it could be 'well, $10 to see the ending would be nice, and I have basically already bought two thirds of it, right?'

And dovetailing is often awesome because the stories don't share a common thread. Like the example I gave, the Homer and Bart plots in The Old Man and the "C" Student are completely separate... until Homer's stupidity saves the day.

A significantly more awesome example from Arrested Development. Please do yourself the favor of seeing the show, first.

The plots don't need to be related in an obvious way to have an awesome dovetailing.

Or let me put it another way. SE is making crappy little robot toys. But if you put them together HOLY SHIT IT'S VOLTRON OH MAN THAT'S AWESOME.

Re: Do you plan on buying the next expansion chapter?

Sadly, missions will never go back to the level of CoPs in FFXI - because all people did when we had them was bitch about how hard they were and how much coordination (and actual thinking) they required. People are too emotionally attached to easy success in FFXI that they're actually emotionally hurt when they don't win a fight and despair if it requires a few tries to find the right strategy. Apparently, its actual blood that you bleed in this game.

I never understood the mentality personally. Lose, get back up, try again.

I'm hoping FFXIV doesn't fall into the same problem, but seeing as characters will develop by different means, including missions, maybe that will encourage players go come with their game faces on. At least it would better than a raw EXP reward would.

Re: Do you plan on buying the next expansion chapter?

The problem with losing things like ACP though, was the fact that you had to redo that fucking annoying level capped climb up the tower. It wasn't really fun the first time, but I dealt with it because that was what I had to do. By the third time, I was pretty annoyed with it.

Losing to Promathia you just had to redo the battle I believe. I can't remember, it's been a while. But yeah, not the same. I don't mind redoing fights if I don't have to jump through a thousand hoops in order to do so. But even re-watching the CS for the airship fight got really old really fast.

Re: Do you plan on buying the next expansion chapter?

The biggest pain for me with the CoP missions were the retarded level caps. Other than failing the snoll fight once due to lack of burst DD and the Tenzen fight because of Sleepga II off the tarutarus I didn't have any trouble with the missions. They weren't particularly hard but the fact you were forced to do some without key job abilities only added annoyance, not challenge, and coupled with having to gear up for each level range was just a ridiculous timesink in a game already saturated with them.

Re: Do you plan on buying the next expansion chapter?

Myth #1: You need key jobs to win CoPs.

No, you just need a coordinated, balanced PT to complete CoPs. Only problem is today that people have forgotten what a balanced PT looks like. Tank, Melee, melee, Mage, Mage, Support. Though "support" really wasn't even worthwhile til COR hit 40 caps, RDM hit 50 caps and BRD hit 60 caps. Otherwise, these parties are relatively simple to assemble. RNGs and SMNs were not required jobs, but they weren't bad to have around. The only mandatory job, if there was one, was BLM. They aren't hard to find.

Aside from that, you just needed enough people who could pay attention for more than a minute to beat CoPs.

Myth #2 Gearing for level caps was annoying.

Gearing for level caps was simple provided you had given some thought to it in advance.

They had options for gear storage that were implemented during CoPs and have only grown to this day. It was simple to make sets that you could store away. Only the truly anal "maximizer" had a problem with it since you couldn't store HQs or mix up the sets. You didn't need HQ gear or to max out builds to win CoPs.

And you could go back to this gear if you stored it after missions and use it for levelling other jobs, BCNMs and the like. I always did this, never had a problem and I was always prepared because of it. Go fig.

Myth #3 CoP didn't have hoops to jump through.

                        Coral Crest Key
                        Coral Key
Some special item that was a hook to beating bosses that was time consuming to obtain
                        Escort Missions in Sea
Running to the mountaintop in Attowah Chasm
Obtaining crests in the Sea Palace.
                        Sea Palace race tower climb
Giant Scale hunting to open portals.

Since CoPs, only the WotG Treeant NM mission has vaguely resembled the run-around of CoPs.

Myth #4: If you lose ACP final fight, you have to reclimb the tower.

Yes and No. If its your first fight or you want they key item, then yes you have to reclimb the tower for to get the key item that will reward you with the other key item after the fight. Aside from that, anyone can jump in and do this fight after warping to the tenth floor and hoofing it to Stellar Fulcrum so long as there is a party that needs the fight.

Yes, but I was talking about redoing it for yourself. For the win. Doing it again is fine if you enjoy that sort of thing but it was retarded that if I lost (when I needed the win to complete the storyline) I had to climb and reclimb and reclimb and reclimb.

You're entitled to your opinion but when we failed on Snoll Tzar the first time due to insufficient burst damage and returned with x3 Mnks and obliterated it then it's clear the game favours lazy encounter design. So while you maintain you don't need key jobs why exactly would you not optimise a party to destroy a fight rather than wipe continually just because little Timmy wants to play his Bst through all of CoP?

Has zero to do with storage or planning. Back then, just as now, I didn't have access to an endless pit of gil. Invariably as I levelled Nin I sold gear to fund the next tier. Gearing up for 30, 40, 50 and 60 cost me a ton of gil and time spent farming all over again for gear I'd thought at that point I'd grown out of. And, while you did bring up gear storage, as a ninja that really doesn't apply to you as at no point from level 10+ do we have a full, definitive set of gear other than AF that can be placed in storage.

So its just my opinion, but you're the one that fell back on MNK x3 for the win. As if MNK was the only spike damage dealer in the game. Nah, there aren't dozens of SAMs around every corner of the game. Or BLMs. Or SMNs. Or RNGs. Or WARs.

And anyone that wants to go through these missions as "mah fav'rit" doesn't have any business doing these missions in the first place. I kicked a BST from my static when I told him we'd need his PLD for Sacrarium. He sold his PLD gear intentionally to get out of it. Wanna BST it up in Promys, I'm down with that, but if you offer the job, I'm gonna ask for it. If you back out after telling me you have the job, that's a problem
