Not one bit. Manslaughter implies that the person wasn't fully capable of controlling their killing. If you honestly can't keep yourself from having a drink, or one more drink, it might be eligible for an insanity defense as a mental illness caused by a drug addiction; but anyone with their head screwed on properly has more than enough self-control to A- Not drink too much and B- Not drive after drinking. If murder requires an intent to kill, drunk driving definitely meets that. There is practically zero reason to drive while under the influence of any drug unless you want to kill someone.

Same goes for any other drug, be it prescription or recreational. Restricting things for no other reason than that they could lead to trouble, despite any other benefits (see medical marijuana, doctors recommending a glass of wine; and entertainment and artistic value), is pointless and leads to a nanny state. I mean, how many ways could you figure out how to kill someone with an Xbox controller? I can personally think of three or four instantly. But would you ban video game controllers for the sake of public safety, or charge the idiot that's thawping people across the face with Xbox controllers with assault?

People around the world find it so much easier to demand legislation to ban activities than to take responsibility for their (or their children's) actions. This is how democracy is failing. People keep demanding more and more laws to "protect" people that before we know it, what little freedoms we had left are going to be restricted.

I do think it's sad when someone intoxicated knowingly or unknowingly hurts an innocent person, however, you can't place the blame on the substance only. The bottle of J.D. didn't force you to drink it. Somewhere along the line the decision to drink it was your own choice, and only your own choice. Continuing to ban and restrict substances because some people are really retarded to begin with is anti-democracy as far as I'm concerned.

The thing is, laws aren't going to help the problem, short of prohibition; which history has shown actually tends to make things worse. If the legal drinking age is 50, and some 20 year old has a drink, and goes out for a drive and kills someone, it's going to have the same effect as if the drinking age was 18. It's still some reckless idiot endangering other lives.

Restricting access to something tends to make it more valuable. I mean, how many kids over the years have done drugs because they were illegal, and thus cool? How many people have died because drugs are illegal; whether it be shooting by police or people they deal with?

Stricter penalties for drunk driving, I will agree with. DWI should not even be an offense, it should simply be considered extremely reckless driving. Revoke the license the first time. If they hit anyone, even a fender bender, consider assault with a deadly weapon. If anyone is seriously injured, attempted murder. If anyone dies, murder. Once someone has actually done something to endanger others like driving drunk, yes, make them reearn their right to drive; if they do it again, bar them from the roads for life. The problem in teh Uk is supermarket sell alcahol vry cheaply. you can buy a litre of vodka for £6.99 ($13) You can get a 24 pack of bear in 500ml cans for £10 ($19) and sometimes they do 2 packs of 24 for £15.

Because the cost of alcahol in bars and pubs due to tax is expensive, people buy cheap from teh supermarket, get tanked up at home then go out, so 75% of punters are pissed before they go in the clubs and bars.

In my area, we are known for having a bar on nearly every street corner. I remember my brother-in-law saying he would be visiting often because if he tried to go to every bar in our metro area and drink 2 drinks in each bar, he'd be at it for quite a few years and he was up for the challenge. LOL We have the highest brandy consumption and we used to have the most breweries, Pabst, Schlitz, Blatz, Miller, etc. We also have a very large ethnic diversity in our metro area, a high concentration of German and Polish to start with and then British, Swedish, Irish, African, Latino, Norwegian, Asian, Scandinavian, etc. (Swedish, Norwegian,Scandinavian are more in the western area of our state but there are still significant numbers in the metro areas.) In the summer we have huge ethnic festivals at the lakefront to celebrate our diversity as a city.

We have the same issues here Jarre with people being pissed before even entering the bar and the laws are far too lax also. Our supermarkets sell cheap alcohol, so cheap that its no wonder people get drunk before leaving the house. Many parents here have the attitude that their kids can have drinking parties at their home because at least they know where they are and that they are safe. After a few deaths related to these parties, parents are now being held responsible for all of the children that they knowingly let drink in their home. Good law? Nope, because the parents just deny it and the kids lie. People just don't get it.

Prom and graduation time is when the rational adults in our area hold their breath and pray. Every year without fail we have a couple of cars full of drunken kids crashing and killing everyone, including innocent people in other vehicles. Yet there is an outcry every time a law gets passed or adjusted to help protect our children and others from situations like these. I think it would be wonderful to have parents/kids ride along in rescue units in the wee hours of the morning and see the crashes that take innocent lives and the horror of it all. Maybe that would pound some common sense into them.

Right now it takes more than 5 drunken driving tickets before its more than a slap on the hand. So basically if you get a ticket, they make you take some classes, pay a fine, and you are good to go. There is talk of raising it to 3 times and then you'll see a jail cell but the outcry is so huge that its unlikely that it will happen. People feel they have a right to get drunk and kill other people or damage other people's property.

Yes, because as we all know, 21 year olds never do anything stupid and are so much more intelligent and responsible.

Other countries that have the legal drinking age at 18 don't have the level of drunken idiot problems that the UK has. Upping it won't change anything.

Alot of those causing the problems are under 18 anyway. Increasing the age limit on alcohol would just mean they'd be more underage than they already are.

Same goes for cigerettes, they increased the age smoking to 18 recently, I still get girls who look 14 asking me for a light.

On top of the 4 points lsited in my previous post, they are also looking at decreasing the amoutn of alcahol consumption to 1 unit for drink driving, meaning 1 small glass of wine or half a litre of beer. Personally I would like to see a no tolerance full ban.

As a nation we are prceived as a bunch of rowdy piss heads, and I happen to ahev toa gree with them. We tend to binge drink rather than drink slowly with food like they do on the continent. And the cases of liver disease has increased by 4 fold over the last 10 years and the amoutn of teenagers now having to ahve their stomaches pumped etc. has increased by 500% over the same time period.

Tougher laws need to be put in palce to people who buy alcahol for underage and also for those that sell it. although it is heavily critisized for cost and supposed ovasion of privacy, I support the notion for every person over the age of 11 to have a national identity card and be compulsory to ask for ID from anyone (no matter what their age is) to sell alcahol to them.

I've actually never been to a supermarket that didn't carry alcohol, at least not one where I was in the beverage section.

Not to be insulting to a group, but, its a good reason why a group of people shouldn't vote. Don't get it, learn history.

1. Anyways, I know some states allow the consumption by under 21 if its given by a parent/guardian, so theres that.
2. Just because its a higher punishment, doesn't mean the stupid ones will use good judgment(lack there of) to don't do stupid things.
3. Cost, right, that'll just mean more people might turn to moonshine.
