Mhurron, the thing is here, you're wrong. It is FFXICLOPEDIA that has worth, not the content. The content is freely available to copy, redistribute, modify, and generally do whatever the hell you want with. Ganiman/Gahoo/Whoeverthehellelse has no right to sell the RIGHTS to that content, just the CONTENT ITSELF. And once again, if Wikia wanted the content, they could've had that for free, so it would make no sense at ALL to pay hundreds of thousands of dollars for it.

I think we have one, it just redirects to ffxiclopedia because it's a much better source of content with a larger community.

Technically Feba is right, they didn't sell the content itself because they simply can't do that. What they sold was the name and the traffic the site they ran generated.

Emotionally Murphie is right, people should be pissed off because the site became as big as it is today thanks to everyone's contributions.


So, I'll bet my 1000g on a draw due to exhaustion and/or and old school Double K.O.

They are selling the work as it's the only part that has any worth. Just because they are not revoking access, or that they can't stop people from copying it verbatim does not mean it was not a sale.

Ok, let's say you host a convention. A lot of people come, it gets popular, turns into somewhat of an event, but you're not making much money. Someone offers you some money to become affiliated with their Super-Awesome-Convention-Hosting-Co., and you agree. You didn't sell the convention, you just affiliated it with their company, and got yourself paid to continue hosting it. The convention is made by the people attending and the people who have booths set up, you can't sell that because it doesn't belong to you.

Again, this is just getting away from the point, which is that I don't care for how they do business, regardless of whether they are selling, affiliating, whatever.

And heck, this entire discussion really has nothing to do with the announcement of the BG Wiki at all. So can we all stop talking about it?

Read my edit. They were doing something for free, and then a third party came along and offered to pay them to do it, provided they place themselves under the banner of said third party.

If Wikia wanted the CONTENT, they could've easily just taken it for themselves and used it on their existing site. The work doesn't even belong to them, so they cannot sell the rights, just the content itself (again under the GFDL)-- which brings us back to Wikia being fully within their rights to simply take all the information and put it on their own pages.
