    Re: Introducing the BG-Wiki

You know there is a easy, but work-intensive solution to all the debate about FFXI Wiki and BG-Wiki..

FFXIO could just start its own.

      Re: Introducing the BG-Wiki

I'll just chip in since I couldn't resist.

Technically Feba is right, they didn't sell the content itself because they simply can't do that. What they sold was the name and the traffic the site they ran generated.

Emotionally Murphie is right, people should be pissed off because the site became as big as it is today thanks to everyone's contributions.

So, I'll bet my 1000g on a draw due to exhaustion and/or and old school Double K.O.

Mhurron, the thing is here, you're wrong. It is FFXICLOPEDIA that has worth, not the content. The content is freely available to copy, redistribute, modify, and generally do whatever the hell you want with. Ganiman/Gahoo/Whoeverthehellelse has no right to sell the RIGHTS to that content, just the CONTENT ITSELF. And once again, if Wikia wanted the content, they could've had that for free, so it would make no sense at ALL to pay hundreds of thousands of dollars for it.

FFXIO could just start its own.
I think we have one, it just redirects to ffxiclopedia because it's a much better source of content with a larger community.

That is also why some companies absorb others.

As it is much easier (and cheaper) to buy an stablished name than it is entering a market with a new product that would compete directly against said name.

So let me get this straight. You're saying Red Hat Linux has no worth because the software is freely available to copy, redistribute, modify, and generally do whatever the hell you want with.

No one sold any rights to the content, they sold access to it. FFXIclopedia has worth because of the access to that content in that format it provides. It has worth because of a community that created the content is probably going to follow it and continue to create content that requires hosting for others to access it. They could have simply shut ffxiclopedia down and that loss is what created worth.

However selling access to the work or selling the work itself are just semantics. The site address, mods and whatnot have no worth outside of the content, so they did, for all intents and purposes, sell the content which is the only thing that had any sliver of worth to it.

I was gonna quote and comment against some of the things stated in the last two pages in this topic, but the damn lolcats took the fight right out of me.

So instead I'll just (re)post this and state directly that *this* kind of information is what the BGWiki needs.

Mhurron: In a business sense, pretty much. If you wanted to make a distro based off red hat, you wouldn't pony up all the cash it would take to buy red hat, and give their developers cushy government jobs, you'd just take the content and use it yourself

FFXIclopedia has worth because of the access to that content in that format it provides. It has worth because of a community that created the content
Which is EXACTLY the same thing I was saying.

the content which is the only thing that had any sliver of worth to it.
You just directly contradicted yourself... Not only by saying that it's the content that has worth right after saying it's the community that has worth, but by yourself having a backup of FFXIclopedia which proves that it's NOT a matter of access. FFXIclopedia wouldn't have shut down if they weren't bought by Wikia, so your point is moot. They weren't holding the wiki or content ransom.
