I read the first post in BG. I haven't read most of this thread and only a third of the closed thread linked on page 1. I don't plan on reading any more. I'll just say this:

Fuck whatever they did. It doesn't matter. FFXIclopedia is the best organized MMO wiki I've seen. If this is going to ruin the best source of information for us ever, then this isn't worth getting worked up over. I don't want to have to split my attention between Warring Wikis.

You want to talk about the truth? The truth is, when people bitch, they ruin good things for themselves. Every big business does much worse shit than this. Verizon is happy to close down an entire department and lay off 60 workers and then, one month later, open up a new division with 60 new employees with worse benefits with a very similar purpose. They still give me Internet.

If FFWiki continues to be good, we'll continue to do what it takes to keep it together. Don't give me "blinding yourself" bullshit, like BRP said in the other thread. The veils are over your eyes if you think you can make this world anything resembling perfect.

This I have a problem believing.
Accuracy should be no problem given that a number of posters of BG probably already were wiki contributers and there are many many sources to pull from. I'm sure several people will use these other sources just to have their name there as the 'author' of the page.

Forums is one thing. A resource for knowledge, with the people they have, is another. Yes the talk pages might be full of it, but it won't affect the basic information.

I don't believe you can say "ok, this document is free to use on this website, but nowhere else" under any free license, and if you can I highly doubt it would hold up in court. The only way I could think of to do something like this would be to have the copyright automatically transfered to BG, so that they could control it. And I'm not misunderstanding, I'm saying people have already been saying that bg wiki has taken content from FFXIclopedia.

And as to number 3, that isn't a GFDL vio, that's a copyright vio.

this would make Wiki copyrights pretty much impossible... unless they make the license "oh btw all your copyrights to this are gone, you agree that this person has full copyright control over it. bitch." type stuff, and people that contribute to Wikis generally don't like that.
Also, as BG wiki is apparently copying FFXIclopedia articles, those articles must also be under the GFDL-- if BG doesn't delete anything containing any content whatsoever from FFXiclopedia they can't have a restrictive license.

1) my understanding (although I haven't seen official license information yet) is that the copyright to the works is being maintained by the original author(s) with reproduction license granted to BGWiki and editorial license granted to BGWiki userspace. (this sounds like a CCL-esque license but it's possible they're still shopping around. the project *is* only about 72 hours old after all.)

this is something I'm still trying to understand in detail; but we've been assured it will be a license that will limit wholesale importation by FFXIC (so not GFDL) but doesn't sign away the rights of the original contributor.

2) BGWiki has no intention to copy any content from FFXIClopedia that is not brought over by the original author (the original author is of course, free to reproduce the work on an non GFDL site at their discretion, so this makes it a non-issue in the event that say, you wanted to copy your user page over byte for byte)

I think feba may have misunderstood: BGWiki is not going to mirror the current wiki; it's going to be rebuilt.

there's alot more hands working at the BGWiki than the early days of the FFXIC so it'll go pretty quick once it's time to start in earnest.

3) it's not a violation of the GFDL if the work was copied from an external source to begin with (since the work doesn't reside under the GFDL in this case) - although the specific formatting may be considered GFDL, if the templates are set up independently or by the same original author, then it doesn't matter anyway.
(this covers basically all the item data on clopedia since they were primarily sourced from FFXI somepage)

Now let us get serious on this BBQ, it really does not matter if you are a friend of BRP or an enemy. BRP knows lore, he is not a dumb person. Ya he can be an a-hole at times, as we all can be. Just because you are not friendly with him you can not just discredit his knowledge.

Forgetting what Sev wrote as personal attacks, as they were uncalled for - at the end of the day, whatever you personally think of him, BRP knows FFXI lore inside out. I want accuracy when I am looking things, and I know that is what I will get. Each will have his own thoughts on it, but I actually have little doubt that the BG Wiki will be accurate, and NOT full of elitist posturing. But hey, that's just my opinion.

FFXI's battle and EXP system is just dull for me.

Come back when murphie does, come over to kujata. Got a good amount of people there that may keep it less dull then before. Exp does suck, fun in a group of friends or a good ls to keep you laughing. Then the epicness lilith was talking about would happen Feba, Mhurron, Murphie, and myself in the same linkshell.... god the harassment I get would never stop.
