Re: Will we see FFXI for Wii?
here, I'll rebut you then.
the average external usb 20GB harddrive costs in the area of 45$
the current price gap between an xbox360(premium, to get the same 20GB drive) and a nintendo Wii is 100$USD. little johnny with his wii is still ahead 55$.
this is erroneous. the wii fails to keep up in sheer processor and graphics performance versus the xbox360 and ps3; yes. It does, however, enjoy a much less processor intensive architecture (not least because there's no multicore dispatching overhead) and isn't running a dedicated shell (the wii menu isn't active while the game is, contrary to xbox and ps3 where the shell is always running.)
all of this is immaterial however, because we're talking about FFXI; where wii's specs far exceed those necessary to run the game in its current iteration. The primary limit to graphics quality and space is system memory, the wii has approximately triple the memory that the ps2 does. (yes yes, the xbox360 and ps3 both have significantly more - since SE isn't planning to drop ps2 support at this time, it won't matter anyway, since the game is capped at 32MB of system memory as a result.)
they probably will not, because there would be an investment cost in making the harddrives (unlike the 360 where all they had to do was recompile the pc version for PowerPC architecture and press the discs.) even though the difference between the 360 version and the Wii version would basically be one compiler option switch change, and a new wrapper for the different HAL. (all of the localization for the powerPC architecture has been done already.)
a big part of this is that ultimately, this game is aging, and SE is much more likely to focus resources on new titles, rather than this one.
as far as 'hardcore gamer's game' and 'casual market'. I want to see the market research report that indicates either of those.(especially the latter)
until you supply it, I counter you with Smash Brothers Brawl, Metroid Prime 3, GG ^ core, and a host of multi-platform 'hardcore' games, including a reimagined resident evil 4. just because the bundled title was 'casual' does not make the system casual.
oh, and firmware update 3.0 added generic usb keyboard support to the wii.
here, I'll rebut you then.

I beg to differ. And I'll say it again if I must. Let's look at it this way, when you consider the things we're doing with games on the PC, PS3, and Xbox 360, is the Wii all that much better than the PS2? No. Not at all. And there wouldn't be much room for improvement, if SE decided to graphically update.

But really, could you see SE announcing that they'd port FFXI to the Wii? I can't. I highly doubt that they'd get a big return on their investment. FFXI is more of a hardcore gamer's game anyways. And the Wii audience is predominantly casual market.
