    Re: Beating the nay-sayers ..

FFXI is really far from dieing, even if the population dropped to 100k it wouldn't be dead, although it'd be a shell of its former self IMO. MMO's have survived with less than that and many still do(*cough iRO cough*), the worst that would happen would be server mergers to help the situation. Just because every MMO isn't getting WoW numbers doesn't mean its dieing, anyone who says otherwise knows nothing about MMO's and should keep their mouth shut. FFXI is above average, WoW is "wtf I have so many subscriptions why bother making a Warcraft 4 RTS/Diablo 3 game" above average.

Anyway, yes, I have seen myself less jobs in the 40 range as Yearg has said. I static with a PLD, and the big issue I have sometimes if FINDING DD'S. Something I saw in the low levels so much, yet I had to wait 30 minutes to get 2 more DD today, as I'm not the type of person to send tells to people who aren't seeking(I hate when its done to me).

This however only reflects my server. Another server may not encounter this issue, and this lack of players seeking this week could be attributed to
    A) Spring Break for some or B) School, as certain high schools/universities are having their finals very soon.

      Re: Beating the nay-sayers ..

To me personally, FFXI is dead or nearly there.

I have been playing since early '04, and have made so many friends over the years. But a lot of them are gone, and because of changes in my life and others, it's been harder to get on frequently at a time where we can play together.

I also find this incredibly hard when looking for an end-game shell. I had to leave a really nice, easy going end-game shell (Calamity) recently because they did events during the day time for me. And I was unable to attend anymore events for my newly acquired Dynamis shell (Firstaid), because my daylight savings had ended, and America's got changed (meaning, it used to be at 8AM on a Sunday morning, and is now changed to 6AM).

Basically, when I can start playing each day (5-6PM after work), everyone in America is asleep (generally around 2-3AM). That is a real let down for me, as I'm in Japan's time zone and find it relatively hard to play with them in normal exp. situations let alone end game (I was in half-JP/half-NA dynamis once, and that was hard enough to work with).

Edit: Obviously, most of this probably doesn't apply to you. But I felt like ranting. =)

"... and so I close, realizing that perhaps the ending has not yet been written."

Oh dear the [Sky] is falling j/k

I think we have a fair ammount of time left in Vandiel. About the only way I could see FFXI comming to a rapid end is if Square did something stupid like when EQ tried to get it's playerbase to move to EQII or Starwars Galaxies made the infamious update that had half the service quit in 1 week. I don't see either of these mismanagements comming so I'll continue to heft my staff with my fellow Garudaians.
Also if your not sure of what job to work up I'ld sugest playing around with several low jobs to 20 to see what you like plus it increases your subjob options till 40.

          Re: Beating the nay-sayers ..

I have had the same problem with my server as Yearg is describing. It just seems like there is barely any life after lvl 37. It seems like all peeps care about is getting to 37. I invited 3 different people at different times in the exp session. Once they hit 37 like 2 fights later something came up. this was after a few, ohh this is my main now, or no man im gonna be on for 2 hours..

Is FFXI dead is depending on the server. Mine is around 1900 on average. While the other posters is 4k. Thats drastic.

Nin75, Bst75. Drk61, War61, Rdm40, All other jobs are 37. All 3 starting city missions completed. All Zilart missions completed. All CoP missions completed. TouA completed.
