  • Beating the nay-sayers ..

    Greetings, dear FFXI community!

I do not consider myself a true newbie of the game -- I am a seasoned RPGer, have played quite a few MMORPGs, both free and those you have to pay for, and there is something that always draws me back to Vana'diel. This is a game that give me a satisfaction for every single little accomplishment, be it a level or a new piece of equipment. Mind you, I have not gotten far in the game at all, but this is what I feel when playing the game compared to other MMORPGs.

The comparison to WoW is inevitable. I have played both, and WoW bored me. I maxed out my character, and that was it. No real challenge. That is why I came back here. But what I see is people saying things like; "No point in playing, people are leaving," and "The game is too hard to start at now." I do not know how these things are true. I hope they are not, as I love this game, and would very much like to be engaged with it for as long as I am able to. I heard there were less people partying, which is why my goal is to get to BST so I can solo, incase people would stop playing.

What are your input on this? Are the good times of Vana'diel over?..

Plenty of people still play at many levels of the game, but its the endgame content that a lot of players are fixated on and that can make things difficult and even frustrating at times. But this attitude could vary from server to server.

BST is a fun, fine job but there are plenty of other jobs that see invites and are welcomed to parties, so you don't have to resign yourself to only being a BST if you don't want to.

I really haven't noticed a difference in the population. I see less rmt at campsites now. Just because some guy's brother quits doesn't mean the game is over.

Starting out now is easier than it ever was before. Easier ways to level (exp bands, new signet bonuses) plus the economy is awesome if you are just starting out.

The last few updates have added some really nice content to this game. We see a lot of "ZOMG FFXI IS DEAD 3 PPL I KNOW QUIT" throughout the boards. Hasn't been that way for me. A lot of my old friends are back because they played wow for a while and were bored.

Playing as a bst is a good option if you don't want to party much and want to be on your own schedule.
      Thanks Kazuki.

We had over 4k on our server last weekend. Lagged us out something chronic, but there are still plenty playing here.

People have been asking if FFXI is dying since before I started playing. And yeah, that was in mid '04.

FFXI is definitely not dead. Personally, i've become bored of it and moved on, but there's still plenty to do for any player. Just be aware that making friends with high level players is something you should weigh the pros and cons on, as it will likely take you 6-12 months to reach 75. Of course higher level players will be more able to help you, but you won't be able to do a lot of the things they can, which does get depressing.

In response to your question (Are the good times in Vana'diel over?), I say "Nay"!

                      Therefore, I'm a Naysayer

Seriously though, low-level stuff is less common than it used to be. There's no giant mass of lowbies running around, but there is influx. I'm hoping for some mass lowbie action at some point perhaps in conjunction with an expansion, but FFXI is the #3 population MMORPG in the world, so to it's death I'm going to say... NAY, yet again.

I prefer to say Ni!... but Nay will do for now.

                        Re: Beating the nay-sayers ..

As we see and participate in new content and releases (ToAU), we can definately say the servers are gonna keep running for quite a while.

Recently there has been some comment on lower numbers of ppl seeking a group but we need to consider the player base temporarily removed from levelling while checking out the new choco-racing.

Lots of people level multiple jobs so there will always be someone, somewhere levelling in any given level range. For all new players I say "log-on" we're not going anywhere.

Untill we have to merge servers due to lack of player base I think anyone with concerns can rest easy, grab a Selbina Milk, and throw down at the gambling tables.

                          Re: Beating the nay-sayers ..

While I don't think the game is dying yet, people have to admit that there are less mid-range PTs than there used to be. There are just less people leveling jobs in the 37-70 range than there have been in the past.

The comparison to WoW is inevitable. I have played both, and WoW bored me. I maxed out my character, and that was it. No real challenge.
WoW is what you make it (more so than FFXI is). I've been playing WoW for long enough that some people feel I should have a level 70 character. You can read tons of guides of how people can grind to 70 in just over 10 days if you make a point of skipping quests, instances, new gear, crafts etc. Why? So you can be bored between raids?

I'm sure WoW is boring if you have 8 hours a day to commit to it and do nothing but. FFXI requires massive amounts of time and you can't get anything quickly. Once your mid-end game you really can't log on for less than 3 hours and accomplish anything.

In the end I think FFXI is for the more hardcore style player that is willing to invest a lot more time. WoW is for the casual player that likes being able to get on for 30-60 minutes and accomplish something while also being able to walk away from the computer if they need to.

as with most games of this type people come and go. yes ffxi is on 5 years now. but there is so much to do,. i have been playing since north american beta and have not even came close to seeing half of it all. 1 job to 75, 1 to 60, 1 to 51, and several to 37 or so. i have not been monitoring the total number of people on but i can tell its lower than it was early on, but it also fluctuates. i can tell just in past few weeks peopel are playing less. its spring time people are getting out of their houses and doing something besides playing. as far as the game dying or no use in joining us because there are no low level people anymore that just bs. i still have several jobs to take thru the early levels. i know many new players and many returning players. is this game hard yes especially early levels. compared to Wow its really hard early on but when you do gain a level or get a special item you feel like you accomplished something, neither just fell from the sky. you earn everything you get in this game. sometimes the strain of getting special items or a party for that next level or help for level caps wears on you. but once its done you feel such relief and joy. dont be afraid to join us ill be here for a long time.

I'm very glad to see this kind of response. I was afraid it could be true, but now I see that these types of people will always exist; proclaiming doom where doom is very, very far away. Looks like I'll stay in Vana'diel for some time..
