I'm with you here. Anyone who refuses to use the filter just so they can have the justification of getting mad when someone checks them deserves all the frustration they get.

I'm one of the people who refuses to use the check filter, because I want to know who the nosy busybodies are so I can avoid them.

In one case, I've even blisted one person (who was, admittedly, a jerk in other respects) due to their constant checking.

Not physically avoid, no.

But when you're in a high-end HNMLS with tons of good gear, the /checks come fast and furious. One check once in a while I don't mind; that's normal. It's the people that /check me every time they see me blink after casting a spell that annoy me. If you want to know what I'm using and why... just ask.

For habitual offenders, though, they get a special spot in the HNMLS list of "people we don't want to associate with". For those that do this, do NOT be surprised when you get to level 75 and start applying to linkshells and getting mysterious rejections; your reputation may precede you.

You're not alone! I check people all the time, it's an addiction. When I was new, I always highlighted them, and selected check from there. But once I discovered CTRL + C, the world was doomed. No one has yet to be mad at me for checking them, but I'm sure someone will be. But if they have a bazaar, I'll check them no matter what. I mean, never know when you'll find a good deal. I once got Tractor for 1 Gil. ^^

I don't have a problem with being checked at all. Sometimes if I'm being random; once I'm checked, I type up "/em feels examined." If it's a linkshell friend, sometimes we'll have a check war. o_O

I was once looking at bazzaars beside the airship dock and checked a character three or four times in a row by accident. Ussually though, I just check out whoever looks cool, or is high level.

As a side note to the very new players (I am a new player myself i suppose)...after you get to know what all the coolest and best armor looks like you may find yourself wondering:

What rings/earings does he wear?
What belt does he use?
etc...

I even asked a SAM if he ever tried noodles (what with all his store TP gear) and what type of food he ate...he didn't know what noodles did...so, I told him and he thanked me.

I don't check that much, but it is good to keep an eye on bazaars, espeially when somethignseems amiss. Once I got a SH and LB for 1 gil each(2 with jeuno taxes =P) and today I earned 50k from making sheep leather off a guy who was sellong sheepskins for 1g each =D

I heavily suggest you use the Check Filter, if it bothers you. I do(but it doesn't really bother me).

I never thought it was a problem to compulsively check people.

A. If you have a bazaar flag up, you are IMHO asking to be checked, as there is no way to browse your bazaar without being checked.

And I will look at what you have in your bazaar, for what price. I like knowing. It's fun.

I also like to look at bazaar comments. Some people have some pretty funny ones.

B. If you are wearing WHM AF, Relic, JSE, or Zenith gear (not WHM exclusive, but a close enough bet), I will check you, because I want to know about what other gear is avilable for my job. I was looking at someone the other day who had an onimilinli (or something like that) balm satchet, rare EX, I never would have found it on the AH, and had no idea the item existed. I decided I didn't like the stats enough to follow up on the item and ask the person how they got it, but still.

At the same time, if I am /checked by anyone wearing any of these items, I won't be particularly suprised. I don't have any fancy, exotic, strange equipment, but they don't know that until they check me.

C. If you are wearing a pimp hat (Warlock's Chapeau) I will PROBALY examine you to let you know I think you are sexy. I will probably also put /em tries to steal the feather.




I leave my /check filter turned off, even though it makes me paranoid when I'm in my mage gear (because it's not that good) simply because of one quick statement...

I live for that statement. I never SEE it...except in the occasional mistell...but I can see its effects. I adore the effects. I adore it most joining an EXP party, standing around in a group by the homepoint, waiting for someone to buy food or arrows, reday to go, and people start getting antsy and fidgeting, and eventually, start /check-ing each other.
Then it comes. The first "Xyz examines you."
Silence in PT chat. ABSOLUTE STONE COLD SILENCE.
But without fail:
Person examines you.
Person2 examines you.
Person3 examines you.
Person4 examines you.

All in rapid succession.

And maybe the melee says something like "Nice earrings" or something inane like that in PT chat.


Maybe its immature and rude. But I LIVE for that stretching, somewhat awkward silence, each person waiting for someone else to comment first.

I'm on the edge of being a compulsive checker.. however the only people I check is the ones who have bazaars up (who knows what they may be selling and if I can get something cheap?) and the people in the nice looking armor. I will occasionally check people who have questionable armor on (had a party in kazham this weekend and the SAM that was invited looked like he had regular scale mail body on, checked and he had the steam scale mail ). I have my check filter on (it doesn't bother me if you check me once or twice in a row, but 10 times? Come on.) and sometimes I wonder when people check my bazaar "How can they check my bazaar if they didn't check me?" XD

Well, as far as emotes go, I think the best one (usually at Lower Jeuno Auction House) is:

Though, of course, I've never done it for fear of multiple /blist's from /check unfriendly people. It won't work on Japanese though, since it doesn't translate... Could be fun though, try it! Go on.... You know you want to.
