    Aksyanni: You think that's bad?

It's summer 05. I'm a newbie Black Mage, travelling the world with his LS to collect some crystals for some guy in Jeuno to stop the Shadow Lord or something. My LS spends a long time in Davoi, fighting off orcs, keeping the weaker members safe.

We finally get to the wall, and I pass through it. I zone into the area to finish my cutscene. Now Loading... Now Loading... hm, it's been loading for awhile.... disconnected from server?! Tried to log in again and again, to no success. Eventually, SE announces they're having server problems from DDOS attacks.

I get back the next day. And SE had to roll back the servers. Some people lost EXP. Some people lost gil. I lost an event. I was back at the entrance to Davoi. All that time was lost. I had to track down a nearby WHM to escort me to the wall (he was even lower level than I was. We both wound up dying, multiple times). I got through the wall and made it to the magicite (thanking the WHM for dying, and promising to send him some gil to make up for his trouble)

Half way through the cutscene, I disconnect.

Luckily, that time I was able to log back in, finish the cutscene (although having to watch five minutes of cutscene again is not fun), get the magicite, and warp out.

      Wow, that really does suck.

Hell, for me it was just an annoyance, but when the power surges for a second, I kind of expect my SURGE PROTECTOR to do its job and not restart my computer. >.<

      Oh well, life goes on.

Hmm. When I agree to join a party, I consider it a promise to do my best to fulfill my role in the party. It's also a commitment to stay with a working party for reasonable amount of time, since I can't do my part for the party if I'm not in the party. One hour is nowhere near "reasonable", IMO, especially after Valkrum Dunes.

If you never get mad at another player because s/he drops right after a "I gotta go; LS needs me," then I can have some respect for your position (even if I disagree with it). However, if you've ever became angry or even annoyed at others for disbanding early without prior warning, then you'd be a hypocrite.

Well it's either dead, or doing it's job. The fact that your PC isn't fried is probably a sign it's doing it's job. It's job is to protect devices from power surges, that is to keep huge amounts of electricity from going through them and making them explode. It's not intended to supply steady power. If you want that, look up "UPS", or 'Uninterruptible Power Supply", which will not only do a better job of protecting your computer, but also many of them have batteries in them that allow your computer to function for minutes, or even hours during a total blackout.

Oh, see, now I had this misconception all along about what a surge protector is supposed to actually do. Much appreciated. Time to go spend some money.

            Well, tomorrow. It's 2:15 AM.

Unless fuel cells have gotten a lot more common place than I know of, pretty much every single UPS has a battery. That said, different UPS's can handle different kinds of problems.

              • Re: What's your pet peeve in FFXI?

There are alot to mention but I will stick with the ones I have encountered.

                1. Mentioned on numerous posts. Afking constantly on Parties, or the famous "I need to afk 5min+ to eat" in like 10min - 1hour after starting to exp. This is really annoying for those people who have already did their Real life thing before seeking. It wastes peoples times and if the AFKING job is the key job, tanks or main healer etc it really cripples the PT, and it can produce rival pts to take over the camp. (Happened on numerous ocasions)

                2. Catastrophic party configuration. This is my personal opinion and it will varie from other people. But I really hate to party pre-meritting parties to be the only mage (RDM in fact) and having 4-5 melees. Requesting Haste, debuff, heal, and non stop pulling because I know how to perform on this kind of parties. Have done before and will do again to get good rate of exp flowing.

                3. Adaptation on Parties. Specially tied with point 2. If the group is not a well balanced Party, then people should adapt their Subjob to fill the gap where we have a weak spot even if that means you may not perform as well with other sub jobs. This will usually go toward COR, BLU, and Melees. If we only have 1 healer, it could be more productive for other job in which can sub /whm to do so to help out, or alternatively go to a camp where mobs doesn't aoe (Pick colibri kill spree instead of doing IT PuKs). Subbing /nin to avoid some hits when you get hate is also a plus.

                4. The so old fassion Mana burn type Blm. This is just easy to handle but still annoying.

                5. Replacement without confirmation. Stated on many places aswell. If your party is not going to stay long, or if the key classes without any replacement seeking does not have time do NOT replace. It wastes the PT and the replacement person's time.

                6. Slow Voke from tanks. Seen both Pld and Nin doing this. And yes it can have times when vokes are not ready but if you see the tank stand still when the puller brings the mob and finally starts to voke when the puller has 50% of their health its not that the voke is not ready, but your mind is elsewhere.

                7. Nin tank and their lack of knowledge. Now I have a nin 75 and yes I know how hard it is to maintain threat. However seeing nins who cannot use Elemental 2 rotation, or not even doing Kurayami 2 at 44+ something is wrong... Ninjas has very poor tools of grabbing hate pre-40 so it is understandable and even casting Kurayami1 is not so productive it shows they are trying. Swinging their katanas and voking alone won't buy much threat and it will actually make you poor tanks. Around 50 onwards it surely gets hard to land good dmg Elemental 2s. So your reliance is Kurayami and Hojo2 on opening and the rest is ajustment of the PTs. But if I don't even see this... well as a healer I will see that I will need to heal alot more than its needed.

                8. PT leaders and their lack of searching camps. With due respect on leaders who builded the Party, please do search better the exping spot. I don't want to go to Cadarva MIre (sp?) Seeing more than 80 people in there. I don't want to go on camping spot where there are 3 PTs around our level. I do usually state alternative choices even if that means on Conquest areas but I do get tired if thats 80% of the time. Usual question after the PT is formed is "Where do we camp?".

                9. Face graphic spamming chats and needless abreviation on sentences. I simply dislike "xD", >.>, and other facial expressions when you do have the /emote for it. Specially if its used on every sentence, or various times in one sentence. But this is just me and it shouldn't usually be foreced to be banned from its use. But these days I see more of these "Things" than words.

                10. Lack of pulling initiative. Seriously for those classes who can equip ranged weapon please do so. I know starting from 50s you can have stat boost ammo slot item, But do please bring some additional pulling tools and don't expect others to do the job for you. Drk can poison pull, War/Sam/Drk can equip ranged weapons. Excluded thf, rng, cor since they usually pull without question. Seeing the poor mage, non range equippable job go pull with any range equippable jobs in group makes me cry. Specially the reason is because they have stat boosting gear on them and don't have ranged weapon.

I try not to be demanding. Gear, Food are all costy for melees and it takes time to farm cash and buy the best gears. So I try not to be so picky, and I know the temptation of wanting to level higher is usually bigger than farming cash halting your character progression lvling wise.

Afking is also usually accepted... but if its done too often I will question what sort of place you are living so that you need to go afk so many times. And also 15-20min WC afk, 10-20min food afk. Sometimes adding the afks took longer than the PT duration. For people who have limited free time, these afk interruptions are really annoying. If you expect any of the known afks beforehand tell the leader at least that you need to go afk for food at some point, better if you know the exact time. I don't think you eat dinner on different time every day like 19:00 at one day 22:00 on another day.

Well enough. Thats it for now.

                  pettiness

About 7 of my friends and ls mates all lost access to their accounts in the last 24 hours. Within that time their characters were server transferred. A few of them just lost gil. A few of them lost everything. Some are quitting. Some are fighting like hell to get back to Valefor. Most likely they're stuck on their new servers for 90 days since we all know how wonderful SE customer service is.

Why? It's hard to say really. Most likely it was due simply to the fact they once shared a linkshell with someone tied to a recent drama torama explosion.

Regardless, Valefor just lost several of it's finest players, if even only for a little while.

                        General peeve: Merit parties.

                        Specific peeve: Merit pullers who try to pull too many fucking mobs at once, and then bitch at me for not managing to Sleepga them all. (This same puller wanted me to sub WHM, how the hell was I going to sleepga mobs with /WHM?) Then when someone dies because I can't get all the Sleep I and II's off in time, with recast of Sleepga, I'm to blame because my {Enfeebling Magic} {Too weak.}

Okay granted, there were some resists. This is ENTIRELY normal, though. I get resists fairly often, it happens. My enfeebling magic is capped and I've got +22 with gear swaps, if I ever get Duelist's Chapeau I'll have 15 more. Not counting on that for a while. Don't stand there and tell me, "Such and such RDM has 340" because for fuck's sake, I can't afford 1337 sky shit, can't spend years of my life meriting to cap enfeebling magic, and I can't just make a Duelist's Chap. fall out of the fucking sky. It's nice if your other RDM friend wants to spend his whole life on this game, but I like to at least pretend to have a life outside FFXI.

Gah, I went meriting with friends because I trust my friends not to let it suck, and then want to choose shitty camps with stupid pulls and it reminds me why I fucking hate meriting in the first place.

I got a merit and about 8k XP, but (total: 11k) but it was just stupid the way pulls were being handled.

                        RDM {Taking a break.} {Long time} if that's the shit I have to put up with.

Reminded of why I don't duo my BSt today:

Log in on Foobar's BST and the Zoraal Ja Pkuucha camp since the RMT there seemed to get tagged with the last banstick. The very moment I start EXPing there some PUP starts sending me tells asking if I want to duo. I had honestly just stopped in to see if the camp was doable and told him I'd meet up with him to duo after I stopped at the AH and went out to grab lunch. He said he'd grab lunch too and so I went out.

I get back, head to camp and wait for him to show up in the the Boyhada Tree. I see him in Whitegate and offer to log in Kitten to Teleport him to Mea if it needs it.

He tells me he got a PT.
