Increasing the brightness with f11 makes everything unaturally bright. #2, my graphics card is not powerful enough to force AA and AF, so I see a lot of jaggy edges sometimes. The jaggy edges doesn't bother me, but seeing ffxi in it's full glory on the 360 is sometimes pleasing.
Well, someone with a more powerful graphics card could see FFXI in "all it's glory" just fine on the PC.

I also disagree with this. I play my 360 on a RCA 61" HDTV and I could not be happier with the picture and performance. I even play it in Dynamis or hunting Fafnir, both of which can sometimes even bring a top of the line pc to it's knees but no issues on my 360.

Really in the end it just depends on what resources you have available and what you prefer. "Best" is far too subjective for a definitive answer.

yeah really depend on your PC... My PC seriously own the 360 in graphics.

So bottom line If you got an average PC and a 360 with an HDTV go for the 360 FFXI
If you got a Powerful PC and a 360 get both FFXI
If you dont have an average PC and no 360, check how much it cost to upgrade and if its higher than the 360 then get a 360...

And i found out that nothing beats playing long hours on a comfortable sofa with a wireless controller and a large TV. Sitting in front of a computer is just a pain if you have to work on a computer all day long.

There is also a point if you play with other family members.

My wife and i will both be playing together, so it would require 2 of everything, PC's in this case seem much cheaper for the performance than the consoles.

I've done it for three years. It helps if you have a really comfortable chair.

Played at a desk, I mean.

On 360, not a day goes by that I don't freeze when in Besieged, and often in Dynamis. On PC, third party software often kicks me off, and I get random POL Errors here and there. It drives me nuts.

If I could suck it up and accept short lag bursts with the worse graphics, I'd still be playing on the PS2 today.
This seems to be something that varies.
I'm always extremely careful with hardware (oh), but, somehow, both PS2s I've had stopped detecting the HDD completely after I very carefully took it out.
I called Sony in both cases, and they wanted like $90 to fix my warranty-sticker brandishing PS2s (I've heard this wasn't the case for a lot of people, where they offered to fix it for free-- but someone also said they don't do that ever since the 'flat' PS2 came out)

                      Well, guess what?
                      Fuck you, Sony.
You can keep making your PS2s that get DREs, loosened screws, fall apart, stop detecting additional hardware, whatever.
                      Because, uh... yeah...

That seems to be almost entirely luck based. I've had the same PS2 since it launched here in the US, and I've never had any problems with it. Well, until recently. Now it's kind of on it's last legs, and won't always read the disks I try to play. I know a lot of other people in the same situation that I'm in, but I know just as many who have had to replace their PS2 several times for various reasons. So I dunno. Reliable may not be the best word to use to describe the PS2, but depending on your personal experience - maybe?

                          Yeah, but that's the thing...
PS2s all stop working after a few years, yet my PS1, that I've had since launch, still works perfectly.

There are like hundreds websites out there with tens of thousands of people that have PS2s that stopped working for no reason at all, or just died after 1-4 years of what you couldn't even call "major" useage.

I mean, come on... I've been playing backups on my PS1, and put it through hell, ever since it came out. Yet, my PS2, that has never had to play anything other than those SCEA-type discs, all store-bought games, broke, unconditionally, and Sony won't replace it?

Freezing is true on some 360 depend on lots of factor. My first 360 was over heating while stading alone on my desk and died in a session of FFXI. The replacement 360 didnt freeze in any game yet. So if you got a launch 360 FFXI is a really good way to finish it before warranty expire. New one seem to be fine now.

Still think PC offer the best experience on a powerful PC.

Playing in 720p on my HDTV with a backbuffer at 2048x2048 for really sweet AA no lag at all anywhere AMD64 3800, 2gig of ram, 2x6800GT SLI (7800GTX offer same performance)
                            Isn't that a given?

Re: Which system is the best to play ffxi on?

everything about MMORPG screams PC to the umptheenth degree, no other successful MMORPGs originate on console, with the exception of EQ2, still I have not got around to trying that one, and the FFXI game. Now with that said, I played in 2003 around summer, and played until December 2005, on PS2, and loved it. But I had to get a job! I sold all my worldly console games and paraphinalia on ebay, and bought a computer with it, OMG, that was a great deal(sepcs below) so I am hoping to recieve my copy of Vana d'iel collection next week, and my new video card, since I am low on funds I had a choice of ATI Radeon 9250 128/256MB or nVIDIA GeForce FX 5500 256MB, and opted for nVIDIA because it was available, but also, I did a lot of research on affordable video cards (anything from 10-$70 S/H incuding) and found lots of people seem to use ATI and love it because its very user friendly, now Im getting off topic a bit, but I am going to keep going....and the thing is most options on video cards are not fully ustilized or work fine at many different settings, looking at other games requirments is something to be aware of because no one buys a video card with no intention of eveer using it for anything but one game (sorry FFXI fans). With these reasons taken in regard, I notice there is not much difference between these cards, being the speed freak I am, and broke, it only was 2 or 3 options that both cards did have, that made me unsure still, so since its recomended, AGP or no AGP slot, on playonline website to use a nVIDIA FX series card with 64MB or higher, I hope to test the benchmark out with good results.

I will be runing at least 1024x786 res front/back
more than enough RAM (slots full PC maxed)
dual monitors for quests/maps- other out of game searches
                              a total of 3 40GB HDs
                              5.1 sound card
P4 2.53Mhz (not the best, the computer/MB is about 4-5 years old but for 180 and only needed a sound card/video card I had everything else I had to upgrade from P1 233)

Does anyone know what kind of score I should be expecting with a machine like this? it was not retail so there is no extra programs or tweaks in fact I installed WinXP myself with a CD I bought online and am having sound issues ever since I got that pos and pos video card (ATI Radeon dual head 7000 64MB) what a waste of money, I was young and didnt know any better.
