Running through La Theine on the way to Valkrum is a joy as far as the scenery, but once that wind starts to pick up... my eyes dry out, I have to constantly spit out blowing leaves and I can hardly run because of the stronge gusts. Then in Valkrum - the sand in the eyes is terrible! I have to turn off the weather effects to play effectively!
I love the cloud effects and stars in the sky but cant enjoy that all the time due to the bad lag with weather effects on.
FFXI is such a beautiful game but isnt there something they could do about the drain the weather causes? I have played many mmorpgs and really enjoyed the scenery - especially the skys. Never have I had a problem with the weather causing such a negative effect.
I feel I am missing alot by having to turn it off.
Oh well - just complaining about the weather!

my new comp runs ffxi like its warm butter, but weather effects... omg <.<

it's a real pity.. i have to turn off weather effects too, the frame rate drops a whoppin 10 FPS, my comp is state of the art compared to how old ffxi is.. come on square, fix ur code D:

I hav eto only turn off weather in the dunes/buburimu areas. All the fine particls of dust effects I guess ^^.

I just got a new video card and more ram and my game runs smoot except in towns by the AH. I just assume so many people in that area slow me down. The weather doesn't seem to affect me though.

i just turned the graphics down in general. my computer isn't God, but i don't have many lag issues anymore

I generally keep the settings on my com in the mid-low range. Weather has always lagged my com bad and there are even times when there is no weather and I'm all alone where I'll just get massive lag spikes. But after running the official benchmark and finding out my com barely rates as a 'Decent Challenge' (basically the third worst set up for the game) I can understand why. Though I really would prefer to keep weather effects on 100% of the time, the lag just makes it too hard to play.

I feel for you guys. I started out playing on a barely upgraded Gateway that I bought in 2000. I just recently bought a brand new puter for 3k, though, from Newegg and that thing is a beast. I pull Impossible to Gauge even with all my background Apps running.
After switching from a computer with barely any graphic potential to my new one, I can definately say it's worth the money. Weather effects, the sky, and everything turned up to max at 1024x768 is great. You guys should invest, cuz I don't even have lag at LJ AH now.

I sometimes turn off weather in the dunes or other areas where its realy bad, otherwise its ok, i loves the "northern lights" in qufin.

I have a 3.2 ghz pentium 4 ht 533 FSB, 2 gigs of 400 DDR RAM, 6800 GeForce 512 MB DDR2 OC from BFG.

Background resolution of 2048 x 2048, resolution of 1280 x 1024. Shadows True. Weather on.
Framerates drop to 10 during Auction houses, very difficult to move around. Same with Firaga III and Bard songs. They slow me down like crazy.

When I take off weather, and shadows, everything moves much better. Closer to 24-29 FPS.

This is very disappointing that a system like mine cannot even run FFXI at it's maximum frame rates of 29-30. Actually, I've never seen 30 fps before. Has anyone else? I'll download and run the benchmark tonight to see what my rating is, I forgot, but I think it was Decent Challenge as well 4000+

SE should place something on their benchmark telling us what to improve so that we can upgrade certain things only based on their recommendation.

I want to see as well, what SE is playing FFXI at and what their set up is, and all of their settings. I'm really disliking the slowdown I get with Frame Rates.

Well what I would like to know is if the OP was talking about how the effects hinder them physically from playing or whether they mean they are getting lag from the effects.

I don't get lag from effects but I do understand turning them off because they make it harder for me to play the game. In blizzards, I squint. So at times I turn off the effects so that I can actually see better in game. I think thats the point the OP was making. LOL

Absolutely Grandmom - it does bother me playing with the wind blowing and all and also the lag is noticable. So...actually both hinderances occur and make playing hard.

Its a shame, seems all the other mmorpgs I played have stunning skyscapes and weather conditions without causing any playability issues. I miss seeing the lovely Aurora Borealis in Quifim - when there - because the weather effects are turned off.
I miss seeing the orange glow cast upon the evening clouds. Sniff, I think I'm gonna cry; ;

But to give SE credit...when in the greater Bastok region...I do drink more water for some reason.

LOL!!

I have to admit that when I first started playing FFXI and went to the Dunes the first time with the fire weather effect, I actually wore sunglasses until I found out how to turn off effects. lol
