  • Does shield blocking prevent spell interruption?

The wiki seems to indicate that when a shield block procs while you are casting a spell, it prevents the spell from being interrupted. However it also suggested that this was tied to one of the job traits Paladins have. Is this something specific to Paladins or does it work for anyone?

I'm in the middle of trying to figure out a new shield for my Red Mage, so if a shield block for RDM prevents spell interruption whenever one procs, I'd probably go for one of the smaller sizes rather than something like a Hard Shield(size 3 I think). If the spell interruption benefits are only for Paladins I'll likely opt for the larger varieties to soak more damage for when they do proc.

Hopefully somewhere here knows how this actually works, since all I have to go on at the moment is my intuition and eyeballing my performance while soloing.

My understanding is it's paladin only via Shield Mastery.

That said, the ability can be obtained by other jobs when equipping an Adoubeur's Pavise.

It's specific to the Shield Mastery trait. All levels of the trait prevent getting interrupted from blocked hits, the level simply determines the bonus TP given.

While we're at it, Shield Mastery does not boost block rates.

Thanks guys, good to know it was all in my head. I'll stick with the size 3 for soaking hits then, since I don't see myself hunting down that NM any time in the near future.

And why not, exactly SE? Seems like it ought to as the name implies it > (or maybe they figure A rated skill is enough)

Shield proc rates were raised for everyone at the same time that Shield Mastery was introduced. And PLDs get Reprisal anyways.

Reprisal only lasts for a minute though

Which is 40% of the time when the recast is at most 2:33 (because if you're not getting Haste, something's wrong.)

Fun fact: Way back when, before the changes to shields made them reduce damage instead of block hits completely, a successful shield block would negate the attack - and thus prevent spell interruption. Not applicable any more, of course, but just an interesting historical note.

To add to that, they were also about as rare as parries, making shield just as bad to skill up.
