    Re: PKing

Only problems I can see with the type you want is that a group could just keep spamming invites to a player untill he accepts it. This could be avoided creating a timer that limits you to only challenge a person once every hour or so.

A big problem this would cause is that the game can be hacked, see speed hack and warp hack. A person might be able to make a program that would send and accept a challenge invitation without notifying the player who got the invitation thus allowing the sender to attack him. This could be prevented my adding a function in the Mog House to enable / disable invitations receiving.

But I must say, the system you would like to have reminds alot about the system we already have. I would advice you to get to LV 30 and try both 30 cap Balista and see if somebody is inviting people to Brenner, you can often hear shouts in Jeuno.

Well, I think dueling would be good. You could fight anywhere as long as both parties agreed to it. And no item jacking, or anything else.

Also, there IS a form of PK in this game I forgot to mention, it's called: Go fight Pallas.

well to reply to your post.

thats what brenner and ballista is for. you fight people amongst your level only. you get points for doing things well and can be used towards other things.

general pk imo would start a lot of trouble. you'd have people harassing others to duel when they dont want to. i remember in wow people would send you duels constantly till you give in. its annoying even if there isnt any penalty. in addition, i think just general pk would just instigate things btwn ppl to happen. everyone that duels doesnt necessary like each other im sure. if you get something like that going btwn two ppl that arent the best of friends, just imagine the spam in lower jeuno with 'omgosh you suck' 'hahaha i pwnd you so hard, you suck youre such a crappy <job> you make me ashamed!' etc etc. it would just take away from the team mentality of the game and make the game more 'me' oriented.

see that wasnt hard now was it?

If there was a chance of losing items when dueling, I'd probably never do it (or just do it with only rare/ex gear). I only rarely dueled in WoW (I was on an RP server, but it still happened all the time), but when I did it with friends it was pretty fun.

Of course, on my Rogue, I would just stunlock folks who spammed me with duel invites, and then when they said I was being cheap, I agreed and told them to stop bugging me, but that's really a totally different game and conversation.

This reminds me of the time a friend of mine had competition against those NM gigas. He got charmed and Penta Thrusted his competition to death. Boy, was he pleased.

Anyway, back to the normal thread. I don't have any opinions except I think FFXI has enough PVP as is. But, I think chocobo racing would be cool and will probably be the only form of PVP I wouldn't have a beef with.

There's a timeline that all the updates are supposed to follow, I remember seeing it, but I don't remember everything on it, I think chocobo raising comes out with the next batch of updates, and then after that the circuit is opened.

I may be remembering it wrong though.

I think that Chocobo Racing will be the first Player vs. Player activity that I'll really get into. It sounds like a lot of fun, based on the little bit of info they've given us. I guess we'll see.

You're right, they aren't focused on just running out and killing folks, but to win you're gonna have to do some fightin'. Like in Ballista you need to get a status called Gate Breach to score. To get Gate Breach you gotta smash some heads.

                          right. what techihawking said.

the main goal to win is to score points with petras. to do that, you need to be flagged with gate breach status. to do that, you gotta kill someone. so it puts some sense into the whole pvp thing not just 20 ppl running around like mindless chickens trying to be the supreme champion of the worldz.

Job-based 1 vs 1 PvP would be monumentally silly in FFXI. The game balanced is tilted 100% towards PvE, not PvP - some jobs, such as Bard and WHM, are simply horrible in 1 v 1 PvP, and there's no changing that without unbalancing the PvE game - that's just the way those jobs are.

In situations like chocobo racing, where your job levels and gear don't matter, I can see it working as long as all players are on equal footing, but honestly, if you like PvP that much, FFXI is not where you want to hang your hat. It promotes a totally different mindset in an effort to accentuate the team cooperation elements which are so critical to its design.
