  • I just don't understand fishing.

Don't get me wrong, I understand how to fish things up, but I don't understand how the whole system works in regards to skilling up, determining what to catch etc.

I have Fishing Lv4 (pre-patch) from just generally mucking around with Fishing on the odd occasion. Now I've decided to see if I can make a concious effort leveling it up some. Today, I sat in Port Windurst for a good hour and a half fishing up nothing but Pamtam Kelp with not a single skillup. I was initially using a Composite Rod + Lufaise Fly but eventually switched to Yew Rod + Little Worm to see if I could get anything different. Nope, just more kelp.

Now that I have enough seaweed to make sushi for the entire populace of Windurst, and have finished with no increase in skill at all, I feel that I'm missing something. I think my location is correct, people say you do 1-10 in port, then venture elsewhere. How about my equipment? I wanted to use a Composite Rod because I read on a fishing site that it's strong as hell and rarely breaks. Regarding bait, I just used something cheap because I previously broke three Sabiki Rigs in a row trying to fish under the new system.

EDIT: Funny, the auto-censor thing seems to replace 0utwards with asterisks.

Fishing pre-update as well as post-update depends on knowing what fish bite on what bait in what location. There's several places online where you can find information about fish, bait, and what zones they are in.

FWIW, Lufaise Fly and Little Worm are freshwater baits. Port Windurst is all salt water. You won't catch anything there with those.

If you want to stick to cheap bait, at that level either use Lugworms in port to catch sardines or use Little Worms in Woods, Waters or Walls for Moat carp.

They should see you throuhg a few levels.
