  • Fishing..Post Patch..

Is it even worthewhile to fish anymore? I recently wanted to fish again..but was reminded of the nerf..is it worthwhile to fish now that its been nerfed? What about in the fields compared to city? Can you still fish Moat Carp and normal fish ok? Are Rusty caps the only real nerf? Please tell me if i should even bother with this..

Moat carps have been nerfed in Rabao and have always had mixed results in city. Your best bet for those now is Rollanberry, Knightswell, La Theine Plateau, or East Altepa. I haven't tried Zeruhn Mines but I also haven't heard anything from the general fishing populace that would indicate superior bite rates there.

The other fish it is hard to recommend without knowing your skill level. Nebimonites capping at 27 is a good money maker. Shall Shells capping at 53 is decent. Bluetails to 55 is another good one. And of course your higher level Breams (86) and Black Soles (96). None of these money makers have had a significant drop in catch rates and some have even improved in areas that were previously botted (Thank you S-E!!!).

My assumption is you are still in the moat carp skill level area maybe mid-20's. I would work on skilling fishing while falling back on moats as fodder gil if necessary.

There are some money makers that came with CoP (probably more that havent been discovered yet) but it appears as though you need a decent fishing skill level and/or higher alchemy to really haul in the gil.

Short winded answer to your question - Yes moats were nerfed in the safer areas. You now have to fight mobs in order to get a decent catch rate. As far as worth it? Up to you. I enjoy fishing as my style of 'farming' There are many alternatives I'm sure you are aware of, I'd say it's up to you and whay you like to do.

    Hope I helped.

I for one am glad they fixed fishing a bit. Yes the increase in monsters do suck more but they just had to fix rabao.

The whole padded cap thing completely jacked up the market and all it did was encourage bot fishing.

I knew one guy that had 16 computers bot fishing in rabao the whole time and made some 450 MILLION gil. Convert this to IGN gill sellers doing the same thing with more computers and you got yourself an even more f'ed up economy.

For ppl that don't cheat this is a total slap in the face.

Now everyone will have to manually fish the way it was meant to be. You can still bot fish in towns but your returns won't be as significant. Which I think is much more fair to the hard work real fishers put into the craft.

If you want some good advice, try fishing in first person mode. You can tell when you caught a monster when you see bigger than normal sweat drops. When this happens, just hit the esc button to release your catch. You do not have to fish up monsters if you don't want to. It just takes a bit of practice and you'll get it. Took me from lv 14 to 19 before I got it down good.

If you only bot fish, then you will have no idea what I'm talking about.

Actually they changed that in the last patch too. You can no longer hit esc to cancel your catch. Which stinks cause its ~ a 7 second delay that you must wait. Although time spent fixing rod or fighting mobs make the 7 pulls worth it. It is easy to tell 'small sweats' from 'large sweats' once you get the hang of it.

Shh! Don't tell the cheaters all our secrets! :D J/K!

It's been rather amusing lately. With the vast majority of botters sent packing, and the remainder making far less money than before, being a "true" fishermen has taken on a mantle of mythic proportions.

I had someone basically accuse me of botting my way to level 71 (something which I take grave offense at - I'm at my keyboard for every cast!). They thought fishing was boring.

Little do these people know just how complex Fishing in FFXI truly is, nor how much fun it can be to just wander out into the wilderness and just see what's there in the waters. I'm sure the vast majority of them are annoyed that none of the new zones in Chains of Promathia are useful for botters, but for those of us who fish because we truly enjoy it, it has been a fun experience so far exploring new areas like Misareaux Coast.

Hey Lionx! :D It depends on what you want to fish for really, moat carp in the 3 major cities seem to have had their bite rate reduced but out in the fields it's still fine fishing. I fished my moat carp for Lu Shang in Jugner, just completed it today hehe, and it was great If you can get out of town to fish the nerf shouldn't effect you. Some people even doubt whether there WAS a nerf but i can assure you, at least in towns from my personal experience moat carp were reduced.

So you're after moat carp then? You can't use your sabiki to catch them, thats a saltwater lure only. Rolanberry is good for carp, i tried little worms but caught waaaaay too many crayfish so i suggest insect paste for here. I liked Jugner better since there are no mobs and you can move around and fish in waterfalls or off bridges and things, its nice to change scenery sometimes ^^ and whack a tiger now and then. If you go to Jugner use your composite, carbon rods break really quickly here. Mithran rods will break too in jugner river but much less often than carbon, and composite not at all. Don't fish in the lake though, mobs are there and it seems to be less moat carp too.

Hehe i actually 'cheated' a bit on my lu shang, i bought the last 1,000 fish. It's still mine though! wahahahaha!

Ok well i got a quick question about the lvl to catch moat carp in the places you people talk about. I am currently lvl 6 fishing after taking nearly 2 hours for that last .1 >< but now i am moving to moat carp and i have trying in windy woods. So far i have gotten one bite and 0 fish in the last hour so any tell me where i can fish that isn't nerfed??

building up guild points has pretty much been the only thing i've done in the game recently (aside from ballista). if you want some thrills, go catch some zebra eels @ rancor... doesn't make me very comfortable to be fishing next to 3 scorps that con as VT @ 74. As far as I can tell fishing's no different now than before the patch; quit fishing in safe areas and start explorin'.
