  • Best guild for a WHM

I'm a WAR and I was thinking of being of being a Carpenter, my partner is a WHM.

    we both live in Sandoria...

should he be a Carpenter, Blacksmith or a Tanner? (those are the only 3 options to Sandorians at first right?)
what would be most useful to one or both of us for him to be? What would be more profittable to sell items from?

Thanks so much for any suggestions you can give!

Guilds in Sandy are: Woodworking, Leathercraft and Blacksmithing, but you can join any guild you want if you head to another city, and which craft you choose really does not matter. Unless you are willing to invest millions of gil, you won't get to a level which has a large, consistent profit in HQ. Blacksmithing would be your best choice, at level 25 you can start making gil of of Padded Caps, I won't tell you about that though.
    Money earned in Ifrit: 8k
    Time spent: 2 hours
    Exp lost: 2k
Knowing you'll end up going back anyways: sad.

City of origin has no impact on what guilds are good for you. Realistically, in order to get decently high level (and by that I mean 50+) in any craft means you must have at least a moderate amount of mobility in terms of chocobo, airship, teleport spells, outpost teleportation, warp, whatever, in order to acquire crafting materials or other requirements.

Bear in mind that most guilds other than fishing either lose money or make very little money until at least level 50.

Don't choose the craft you go into based on your city, choose it because you'll find it useful, either for profit, or for crafting your own items (food, armor, weapons, medicine, ammunition, etc.).

Additionally, you can take every craft to level 60 without penalty, so there's no need to pick only one, except insofar as your time and resources allow you to develop your craft.

For mages, I would recommend cloth for some of the high level gear such as Vermillion Cloak, or cooking for pies, juices, and such. Both of those guilds are in Windy, but if you just want to pick up a profitable guild in Sandy, blacksmithing will end up the best. Woodworking is not relatively profitable, and leatherworking -can- be but has a lot of money sinks while skilling up. The biggest money sink you'll probably have with blacksmithing for many levels is tin ingots, which are not all that terrible.

IMO best guild for any mage is cooking so they can make juices to reduce downtime. Very very handy. I know most JP mages have cooking up for this reason alone. Also, friend of mine (WHM) is raising cooking to 100. She's currently at 90something. Apparently the whole way up she's made a profit raising cooking too, so that's pretty nice.

Yeah, cooking seems to be easier to profit from while skilling up than some of the other guilds (items are consumed and disappear unlike making armor, weapons, etc.). The downside to this is that it seems there is less of a market for very high level foods than there is for very high level items from smithing, goldsmithing, clothcraft, etc.
